US Game Sales - Week Ending Nov 3rd - Guitar Hero 3 Edition

I figured we could try and do this on a regular basis, just like the movie box office. That and I know many people were interested in how the sales of Guitar Hero 3 did across all 3 major consoles.

All numbers are taken from VGChartz.com.

Pos Console Name Publisher Week Weekly Total
1 360 Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Activision 1 798,671 798,671
2 Wii Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Activision 1 271,053 271,053
3 PS2 Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Activision 1 254,596 254,596
4 Wii Wii Sports Nintendo 50 146,934 5,873,149
5 PS3 Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Activision 1 113,040 113,040
6 360 Halo 3 Microsoft 6 88,586 4,135,051
7 360 TimeShift Vivendi 1 78,195 78,195
8 Wii Wii Play Nintendo 38 77,184 2,710,566
9 360 Naruto: Rise of a Ninja Ubisoft 1 71,233 71,233
10 PS2 Manhunt 2 Take 2 1 57,894 57,894
11 Wii Manhunt 2 Take 2 1 51,371 51,371

14 360 Ace Combat 6 Namco 2 45,089 156,145
15 PS3 Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction Sony 2 44,548 141,603
16 360 Virtua Fighter 5 Sega 1 38,122 38,122
17 DS Dementium: The Ward Gamecock 1 36,112 36,112
18 PSP Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron LucasArts 4 35,720 161,479
19 PS3 Motorstorm Sony 35 35,423 675,988
20 360 Half-Life 2: The Orange Box EA 4 33,211 423,587

Sorry, I know the formatting kind of sucks. Not sure really how to copy it here and it was annoying just to edit it.

Some thoughts... big sales of GH3 obviously, with the 360 more then doubling the Wii sales. I'm curious about supply of the Wii version though, as I'm inclined to think there were less out there. Ratchet and Clank sales haven't really been spectacular. Especially when you see that Ace Combat 6 on the 360 is right there with it. Definitely shows how behind the PS3 is, considering the R&C games are one of those coveted Playstation titles.

The sales of the Wii version were tremendous. I didn't expect it to outsell the PS2 version since most people already have guitars and could have just bought the game for $50. I'm betting a lot of those 360 sales were game only.

This shows that Wii owners will buy good third party games even at $90.

I'm also happy that Dementium snuck into the top 20. It is a cool little DS game.

BTW, sales of Ratchet and Clank so far are pretty depressing for such a big title.

Wow. Nearly a million for the 360 in week one. That's impressive, especially coming off the packed schedule of Madden, Bioshock and Halo 3 and Rock Band, COD4 and Assassin's Creed around the bend.

I was going to buy GHIII yesterday for the 360 (along with my purchase of COD4) but both CC & BB near me were sold out.

In my area at both BB & CC, there are stacks of GHIII for the Wii & PS3. There were even more for the PS2.

Don't know what that means but it seems to mirror the sales figures above (at least near me).

It must just vary by location. For example, when I was at Target, yesterday, they had TONS of them for the XBOX 360 and the Sony PS3. They had a few for the Sony PS2, but, they did not have a single one for the Nintendo Wii. As I was picking up Ratatouille, I heard a guy ask for the Wii version, and the employee said that they had been flying off the shelf, and they were sold out of the Wii version.

I went to Best Buy, after that, to pick up a couple other DVD's, and when I walked in, they had a huge display of GHIII, and there were plenty of each version. As I was checking out, I saw three people buying the Wii version.

Yes, the numbers for XBOX 360 are impressive, sure. However, the Wii numbers are nothing to shake a stick at. The thing is, we don't know how many XBOX 360 owners picked up the game, only. The Wii and PS3 owners HAD to buy the more expensive version, in order to get the guitar.

I went with GHIII for the 360 (over PS3 and Wii)... I dont know why really, just so used to picking stuff up for the 360, it was like 2nd nature. I still have Metroid and Manhunt 2 for the Wii to play, but I could pass on this.

Even if the Wii couldn't outsell the 360, beating the PS2 is a win for any console right now.

Man, I wasn't expecting sales to be great given the PS3's install base, but those Ratchet and Clank numbers are really bad. I hope they continue making them, but...

That is surprising. I never considered it a system seller, but it barely sold better than the year old Motorstorm.

Apparently there's a game coming out next week on the Wii that rips off Ratchet and Clank. Super Galaxy something?

I hope the good sales of the Wii version of GHIII will translate to enabled DLC.

I know you're being facetious, but R&C and the Mario series couldn't be any different.

It was a reference to a recent interview where the creator of R&C claimed SMG was ripping him off.

Does that take in consideration both the GHIII bundle AND disc only version?

It's not bundled in Japan, only sold seperately.

True, but this particular list only shows US game sales.

Yeah, there's a Japan sales list but I decided not to list them. But for reference, Wii Sports has sold over 2 million there.

You can spin it any way you want to but that is a difference of 527,618(!) units sold between the Wii and the 360. That is a massive difference especially when you consider that the Wii has outsold the 360 all year and has almost (if not more now) the same install base as the 360. It is also telling since so many Wii fans were really looking to these numbers to get a comparison between software sales of a big title across the 3 platforms. I think most Wii people were expecting a closer gap than over 500 thousand units.

Does anyone have the current attach rate between the Wii and the 360? Just curious.

As far as Ratchet & Clank #s sold...that's got to depress the PS3 people since I have seen so many people claim it was going to be a system seller. Who knows, they may decide to make it no longer exclusive to the PS3 if they need more sales/money. Who's is the developer?

Spin, maybe, but I bet there is some truth to shipping far fewer on the Wii than 360. The 360 had a baseline to gauge interest with GHII. Plus with nearly every third party game failing on the Wii I could see them holding back to see how it does with smaller quantities before going all out.

There is absolutely no reason to get the Wii (inferior) version of a multiplatform game if you have both the Wii and the 360 (or PS3).

I am not trying to spin it, in any way. I'm pointing out a possibility. I also maintain that the first week sales of the game on Wii are nothing to shake a stick at.

I'm not involved in some sort of "fanboy battle", trying to put one system down over another. You might be, but, I am not. I am sure that the publisher of GHIII is very pleased with the sales on Wii, and I expect that it will continue to sell well on Wii, especially through the Holiday's.

Not always true. Tomb Raider anniversary(360) offers little more than the Wii, and like RE4, the Wii version looks like it may be the definitive version according to the developers.

but yes, on the whole the 360 version is the one to get.
