The Onkyo receiver will have the HDMI display in the input number. When the PS3 is powered on, the receiver will display more stuffs (in red, such as PCM). So, basically you don't have to select anything (the default?). Of course, when you watch a BD, you always have the option to select a different audio track. You can also select audio out via Coaxial or Optical if HDMI is not available for your audio settings.
I think i gave out too much info... anyway, i believe the selected option is PCM, so yeah, use that one.

I agree with Que Paso in that the PS3 need only concentrate on overtaking the
360 as the Wii is not its competition. The attach rate for the Wii is horrendous,
why do you think they're still keeping up the artificial shortages (although not
as bad as pre-Thanksgiving)? You could say the same on the game front with
the PS3 in regards to attach rates but it's a bit trickier due to the Blu-ray
playability.
Blu-ray also brings another possibility to the table for Sony. Sure it makes its
profit off software licensing & royalties, but it also takes a cut of each Blu-ray
disc/player sold too. The games are outselling the films at this point, but if that
were to change, at what point would Sony decide to concentrate more on
the favored product? And though far from reaching this level of sales, Blu-ray
also ups the saturation point level for the PS3, in that the 360 really only
appeals to gamers.
With the recent Warner switch I'd expect PS3 sales to be stronger
for at least the next few months, but what that means for software sales...
It could go either way, those who jumped in for films buy a game or two
because why the hell not, or they just stick to Blu-rays and make the attach
rate for game software lower.
Just some thoughts.

The year is starting well so I'm hopeful. All three doing well benefits gamers.
BTW, Famitsu just published the top 100 sellers for 2007 for Japan and there is quite a lot of Wii software on the list and not much at all from the PS3. Don't downplay the Wii competition too much. Sales are sales. If I am buying Endless Ocean or No More Heroes and skipping Burnout Paradise for awhile that is the Wii taking a sale away from the PS3.

Sony was the 10 ton gorilla coming into this generation. They should have sold 10 million in six months, not limp to that number in 13 months. It was an easy formula, put out a competent GAMING machine at a reasonable cost and these discussions wouldn't even be happening. MS would have already been in third place had Sony on track to own another 5-6 years of the gaming space. Instead they had to usher in the trojan horse and ram it down peoples throats. It seemed to have worked though. Only thing is, like you said, with so many buying the PS3 as a Blu-ray player the gaming attach rate will start to look worse than the Wii. Not a number you want to show your developers wanting to make money.

Throw in continued PS2 support and there was no reason to mass adopt
to the PS3. It was rushed to market to compete with HD-DVD and it shows
(most telling in the lack of prepared software).

Couple questions:
Is there a way for the PS3 to auto-shutoff after downloading demos? (similar to the 360?)
Also, does every download demo or game have to be installed in order to play? I was looking forward to playing the Uncharted demo after dl overnight. I went to play it and it had to install first. 5 minutes into the install it gets an error and won't finish. So I deleted it and started the download again last night.
If this is the case, how much hard drive space gets used? For example, Uncharted is 1.2 GB to dl, does it take up twice as much space when installed or is the dl file removed?
One more thing, I have a Hitachi 51s715 that has HDMI and digital optical out. I attached the PS3 via HDMI and ran the optical from my TV to my receiver, but all I get is 2-channel sound. The TV states that it can output 5.1 DD through the optical out, but it requires a digital source. A quick email to customer support at Hitachi this was their response:
I have tried various settings in both the bd/dvd audio out and the sound settings, but nothing seems to work.
I know I can run an optical directly from the PS3 to the receiver, but I don't want to (or actually I don't want my wife to have to) switch the audio settings in the PS3 everytime the receiver is used. (with the 360, the component cables carry the 2-channel audio to the TV, and the optical cable carries the 5.1 to the receiver. It sends both signals at the same time so I don't have to switch back and forth)

Most devices that hook up by HDMI only put out a PCM (digital stereo) signal to the TV. Evidently, this is what your PS3 is doing. The TV cannot take a PCM signal and convert it to Dolby Digital 5.1.

attach rate is insane (I myself own 54 games as opposed to 7 on the PS3).
I do however think that better game selection will arrive this year and hopefully

Like Brooklyn said though, they will make up for it on BD royalties (assuming it ever takes off) but can the games division take the hit?
Makes for good hypothesis and discussion at any rate.

Yeah, one more step in the switching process, but I got a Harmony 890 for Christmas and the wife has never been happier. You probably need one of those Harmonys anyway

However, the overall plan I'm sure was for the PS3 to build a solid library of movies and games and make Sony money on both. It could definitely work out that way. I'm not even saying Sony has to catch MS this year. They just need to start gaining ground and convince developers the PS3 is going to be a major player. That can definitely happen and I'm not counting Sony out at all.

On to happier things.
The PS Store is updated.

I really have to get a PS Eye. They just keep releasing stuff for it and some of it looks pretty interesting. I'm definitely checking out the demos and the new themes.

The Eye stuff is all pretty lame imo (I went on a downloading spree yesterday), but Mesmerize (one of the parts) and that new one from today (the japanese-themed one) make nice motion-sensitive screen savers. (The downloadable Eye games quite frankly suck. The ball one is okay for a level or two, the Creature Feature one is terrible.)
And the UT3 servers are broken today

gimmicky for now. Mesmerize is basically you move and theres motion on screen (a screen saver), the japanese one today - same thing, Creature Feature you shake your arm a ltitle and creatures stick to it, and you move through a small semi-maze -- it isn't very fun, the last is a marble game where you knock a marble down while destroying boxes or getting to goals - it is okay at best.
Eye of Judgement is fun though.

I came to the conclusion that the tv would only output DD5.1 from its own internal cable tuner. I ultimately had to hack up my 360 A/V breakout box so I could plug in the HDMI & optical simultaneously.

Yup, the figures aren't good for Blu-ray, but with the format war coming to a
close that may change. Like you mentioned though, I'm sure the plan was for
both divisions to show huge attach rates for the one-two punch to the
competition. With game development times being so long, and costs soaring
through the roof, aside from a rarity here and there, Sony (and MS) can only
rely on themselves as far as exclusive content. It's too risky to do anything
but a multi-platform release.
This ties into something else I don't see mentioned a lot; how a lot of the
older, smaller companies are going to either pull a Square/Enix, or go the way
of the dinosaur due to the rising costs of developing for these more and more
powerful consoles. This is one of the reasons 3rd parties are still releasing
content on the PS2 (or concentrating on the DS). Larger installed user-base
+ lower dev costs (not to mention the familiarity they have with it that leads
to faster dev times) equals a win/win situation for them. It's no wonder the
new release racks for the PS3 and 360 are filled with the likes of EA, Ubisoft
and the rest of the big boys.
Sorry for getting sidetracked, the mind starts to wander when trying to second
guess these gaming companies.

The only games that sell for Wii are made by Nintendo, hmm does that seem familiar? As for 360, it sold less units in 07 than in 06 and that's with Halo 3 being released. The game lineup for PS3 in 08 is very strong as well, I wouldn't be too worried going forward.

But more so, I'm curious what games are due out this year to make it a "very strong" year. Rather, are any platform exclusive (other than MGS4)? I've got both systems and primarily use my 360 for multiplatform gaming (controller pref. since most are FPS games at this time).

I'm reading this months PSM (changed to PTOM) and really intrigued by Richard Bake's (CoD4) comment on the Cell. He talked about doing "procedural animation" through the Cell which "allows for another level of interactivity that wasn't really practical on the previous generation of hardware."
Hmmm, being a hardware guy, i need more info what the hell he meant by "procedural animation." i'll google later...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procedural_animation
Basically animation based on physics and formulas instead of just pre-defined ones.
A procedural animation is a type of computer animation, used to automatically generate animation in real-time to allow for a more diverse series of actions than could otherwise be created using predefined animations.
Procedural animation is used to simulate particle systems (smoke, fire, water [1] [2] ), cloth and clothing, rigid body dynamics, and hair and fur dynamics, as well as character animation.
In computer and video games it is often used for simple things like turning a character's head when a player looks around (as in Quake III Arena) and more complex things, like ragdoll physics, which is usually used for the death of a character in which the ragdoll will realistically fall to the floor. A ragdoll usually consists of a series of connected rigid bodies that are programmed to have Newtonian physics acting upon them; therefore, very realistic effects can be generated that would very hardly be possible with traditional animation. For example, a character can die slumped over a cliff and the weight of its upper-body can drag the rest of it over the edge.
Even more complex examples of procedural animation can be found in the game Spore wherein user-created creatures will automatically be animated to all actions needed in the game from walking, to driving, to picking things up. In the upcoming game Unreal Tournament 3 bodies who have gone into ragdoll mode to fake death can arise from any position into which they have fallen and get back on their feet. The as-yet-unnamed Indiana Jones game from LucasArts shown at E3 2006 features character motions that are animated entirely in real-time, with characters dodging, punching, and reacting to the environment based on a new engine called euphoria by NaturalMotion.

Ah, thanks RichC2... my wild guess was partially correct (it's not that hard to guess). Well, i guess putting more of those physic formulas through the Cell is an already known trick among the PS3 developers (probably not the small guys). Perhaps Baker's team got new ways to do it? The guy is very tight with the next project, but from what i heard about CoD4, hmmm, can't be too bad i guess.

CoD4 is a fantastic game, one of the best (if not the best) from last year. I hate them jumping between developers for CoD games though. CoD2 was quality, CoD3 was garbage, CoD4 is quality, CoD5... one can assume.
The Cell has a lot of processing power, so it isn't a new way of doing it so much as just having a place to put their algorithms to run concurrently with the games themselves. It's a very flexible chip. What hurts the system is the lack of other memory modules which mean they have to take the more CPU-intensive route versus a shared resources methodology used on PC/Xbox360 games. On one hand, it's shitty because they have to completely rewrite the code just for the PS3 as very little can be shifted over. On the other hand, it's like a big toy for more inventive programmers, with new little compartments that are continuing to open up. Double edged sword.
Of course, thats just going off hearsay, I don't really know that much about it
