you can network a pc with a ps3? do you think i could connect my external hd to the ps3 and then copy movies from a pc to the external hd?

i just spent a bunch of money to upgrade my htpc too... added a sound card (not a biggie) and hd... and bought the onkyo 605... i don't think i really need it now

You can definitely connect your HDD to the PS3 and transfer the files. Like I said, you could also just play them right off your HDD when connected too if you want to save space on your PS3 HDD. You can use a program like TVersity to stream the files right off your computer through your network.

Don't think so. The networking is for streaming only as far as I know. Your best bet to transfer files would be your external HDD or a thumb drive.

Darn..That's what I thought. I know this is speculation, but how do you think the ps3 will play a divx file. Will it attempt to upconvert? Wonder which will result in better quality, HTPC or PS3

Not sure about the PS3, but I've been playing Divx files on my 360 since its update came out and they play much better that way than directly on my computer. I just plug my thumb drive into the system and play them right off it. Works perfectly. I'll let you know how it works on PS3 when the update is released.

I play video podcasts on it now and it looks very good. Don't know if it is trying to upconvert them, but even 320X240 stuff is watchable on TV.

As far as moving the files I will probably put stuff I just want to watch once on a compact flash card and delete it when I'm done. For stuff I want to keep on there I will probably put it on my portable USB HDD and copy it over to the PS3. I have had mixed success with streaming to my PS3, but so far I have only used WMP 10 and that may not stream divx.

I can't download the new update. It says I already have the latest version installed?

Has anyone confirmed that it will be a US firmware release tomorrow? Everything I see is for European version

I think so and will definitely test it when the update is released. You will probably have to select it and hit triangle and display all to see the files. This is the same thing you have to do with CF/SD cards and usb hard drives.

Is this confirmed? I don't think the 360 officially supported xvid, but the two or so similar that it works. I'll definitely test it as soon as the firmware is released. I can say that without xvid support the update for divx is mostly worthless. I would use it mostly for MST3K DAP files and most of those are encoded with xvid.

Speaking of Unreal, though, now there's something I'd love to see remade with the new engine.
So how are the online matches for this game? I'm just worried that there won't be that many people online, as I haven't seen a ton of buzz on this (I don't even think there's a thread on this forum for the game) and I haven't played on PSN a lot.

I played a few online matches, and they were a lot of fun. I didn't have any trouble finding something to join, and I didn't experience any lag at all; online was just as smooth as instant-action bots.

Unfortunately the listing that shows the number of players in all of the matches doesn't seem too accurate; for example, it'll say that four people are playing a particular server, and I'll jump in to find ten. I don't think it's refreshing the count fast enough or something. That's not a bad thing -- the more the merrier -- but it makes it hard to gauge how many people are actually playing. There always seems to be a lot more people than the listing had shown; I haven't encountered the reverse yet (jumping into a map and finding only one other person).

I've been saving the campaign and other game modes until I (a) have more time to play after the holidays and (b) have my new HDTV delivered right after Christmas, but even with just the deathmatches I've been having a blast.

This will let you copy files from your PC to PS3 directly.

Firmware is up.

Xvid seems to be supported. (Or so Fandango heard, blame him, not me!)

I have tested several xvid files and all played flawlessly. Seems like a solid firmware update.
To answer an earlier question you can play files burned on a CD-R or DVD-R.

Yup, just tried some divx/xvid files burned on a DVD-R and they worked. Sweet!

You can also watch divx on your PSP through remote play. I'm going to have so much fun with this update.

Odd that there was no mention of BD 1.1 in the "main features" listing when updating.

It is there. There is a new icon for saved BD data which is a feature of 1.1.

I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't there, just that it seems that it should get mention over some voice function at least .

For those of you who have 360 and share videos with WMP11, the PS3 will be aware of what you're sharing. You're likely to not need to set anything up.
