40GB PS3 will NOT play PS1 or PS2 games

Sony Computer Entertainment America Announces New 40GB Playstaton 3:

The new 40GB PS3 will no longer play PlayStation®2 titles, reflecting the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles. Consumers looking for backwards compatibility can take advantage of the limited PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility of the 80GB PS3.

I think it's funny how my 20GB (now 160GB) PS3 with an emotion engine might actually carry a premium.

RichC2 10-19-07 02:14 PM

40G? I thought it was 20G and 60G originally, then 60 and 80? And the 40G is just now coming out...

But yeah, this topic has been covered in other threads.

Fandango 10-19-07 02:15 PM

It still plays PS1 games.

In my head, I had my money in my hand, extended to hand to the cashier, and then I read this news and promptly put the money back in my pocket, and am now using that money towards some nifty 360 and Wii games.

When's the last time Sony has gotten something right?

¿Que?

I took a second job for this?

Decker 10-19-07 02:19 PM

Yeah, to reiterate:
A : Old News
B : Covered in the PS3 thread
C : It does play PS1 games.

No need for this thread -- let's close it.

I was the same way. At some point later this year, I was going to convert to HD finally and thought about getting a PS3 so that I could still play the PS2 games I have. Oh well, guess it's HD-DVD for now until Blu Ray players come down in price...

80 gig PS3 $500 here I come! :D Who would pay $400 for the 40 gig version where they could get the 80 gig for $500?

I don't see the big deal. $80 gets you a used Slim PS2 that you stick on stop of the PS3. 100% compatibility. And switching inputs is not that hard. And for someone who has a PS3, there's a slim chance they have too many composite cables already hooked up.

Awesome news. Plan to pick up November 2nd and then if it comes down on Black Friday either pricematch or if they refuse, buy the cheaper one and then just return the other one later (and tell them that I'm going to).

So I heard Sony was still going to push the PS2. Does this mean they will be lowering the price on the PS2 slim? The word on the street is it will be cut to $99.

PS3 upconverts PS2 games so they look alittle cleaner on HDTV. That's one advantage.

yeah - no point in retreading on territory covered elsewhere... locking.
