Would you like some free adventure games? I know you would...

Okay, so I actually created this thread for another forum, but I'm sure you guys will forgive me for trying to get some extra mileage out of it. This is basically a short list that I constructed (with a little help from some other posters at GAF) of free adventure games that are available on the Internet. It's by no means intended to be exhaustive (in fact, if you know of any other good free adventure games that aren't here, I'd love to add them to the list). This is barely the tip of the iceberg, there are thousands of free adventure games out there, but here's a few that I've either played, or was intrigued enough by what I read about to think that it might be quality. I can't vouch for all these games, but I will say that the Chzo Series is pretty awesome, the King's Quest games are amazing, and White Chamber blew my mind, and Beneath a Steel Sky and Flight of the Amazon Queen are both solid commercial products (now freeware).

AFTERSHOCKED!
Developed by: MadGames (The guy that made this game is now working on SimCity Societies)
Released in: 2002
Genre: Point & Click\Post-Apocalyptic\Comedy
Download Size: 47 MB
Download Link: http://madgames.adventuredevelopers....tdownloads.htm
AfterShocked! is a full-featured post-apocalyptic comedy adventure game in the vein of Monkey Island and other classic adventure titles. Features include hand-drawn 16-bit color graphics, an original musical score, dozens of characters to interact with, plenty of scenes to visit, lots of puzzles to solve, and a completely warped sense of humor.

BENEATH A STEEL SKY
Developed by: Resolution Software
Released in: 1994
Genre: Point & Click/Sci-Fi
Download Size: 7.3 MB Minimum (63 MB Maximum)
Download Link: http://www.scummvm.org/downloads.php (Requires ScummVM)
The game takes place at an unknown point in a dystopian future in Australia, where the Earth has been significantly damaged by pollution or nuclear fallout. The game's backstory is introduced via a comic book, drawn by well-known comic artist Dave Gibbons, that tells the story of a young boy called Robert who is the sole survivor of a plane crash in "the Gap" (the name applied to the Australian Outback at the time of the game). Too young to fend for himself, Robert is adopted by a local group of Indigenous Australians, who teach him the skills he needs to survive in this harsh new environment; they name him Robert Foster, partly due to him being fostered by them and also because of the discovery of an empty can of Foster's Lager, an Australian beer, found near him at the crash site.

After Foster has reached adulthood, he is kidnapped and his tribe annihilated by storm-troopers sent from Union City by its all-powerful computer LINC. Interestingly, Union City mentions prominent suburbs and train stations found within Australia's largest city, Sydney, leading some to speculate that Union City was once Sydney. This was confirmed in a 2005 interview with the Australian gaming magazine, PC PowerPlay.

Foster manages to escape from his captors as the helicopter transporting him back to Union City crashes just after entering the dome, leaving him and his robot friend, Joey, to find out why they were brought there and where to go next.

Joey's personality is stored on a small circuit board, which can easily be inserted and removed from many types of robot bodies. This allows Joey to change bodies as the situation requires, provided his circuit board is not damaged. Joey, however, is not always happy about Foster's choice of body for him.

LURE OF THE TEMPTRESS
Developed by: Revolution Software
Released in: 1992
Genre: Point & Click/Fantasy/Comedy
Download Size: 1.3 MB (Also works on Macs and Linux with DOSBOX)
Download Link: http://www.revolution.co.uk/_display.php?id=10
Lure of the Temptress was Revolution's very first adventure game and work began on it in 1989, even before Revolution's inception as an actual games development company. From the start our aim was to consider the contemporary adventures of the day and then bring something new to the genre. From this came the Virtual Theatre engine. VT allowed in-game characters to wander around the gameworld indepently of each other, living their own lives and doing their own thing. Another feature allowed the player to give direct orders to Helper characters - in this case Ratpouch - who would then go off to perform the task. These technology concepts were certainly unique, though Revolution were not sure how to develop them further in subsequent games. Nonetheless, the result was a quirky and entertaining adventure game that kicked off Revolution's fondness for characterisation and in-game humour.

IMPORTANT When the game first begins, move the cursor to the menu at the top of the screen and RESTART the game. This bypasses the copy protection system.

Ever since a meteor landed in the back yard of Dr. Fred and Nurse Edna’s Victorian mansion, bizarre things have been happening. First, their mutant son, Weird Ed, dropped out of school. Then patients started disappearing from Country Hospital. And now this strange event is affecting the lives of innocent (and even some not-so-innocent) teenagers. In fact, a girl named Sandy is being held captive in that musty old mansion right now. Sandy’s boyfriend, Dave, has lots of friends who need you help to sneak in - and sneak her out. Now exactly how it all ends up depends entirely on which trio of friends you send in there. And which inhabitants you encounter. In fact, the farther you get inside the mansion, the more weird characters you’ll meet. There’s Nurse Edna - who’s as nasty as she is ugly. There’s a disembodied Tentacle who wants you to make him a rock star. And a host of others, who all have their own crazy quirks you’ll have to deal with. Everyone in there seems to be working for Dr. Fred. But the question is: “Who is Dr. Fred working for?”

THE SEA OF GLOMP
Developed by: GAF's very own Kuramu!
Released in: 2007
Genre: Undersea Adventure
Download Size: 5.9 MB (Flash)
Download Link: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/392528
Sea of Glomp really pulled me in with its imaginitive creations, gorgeous visuals and fun gameplay ideas. Little touches like biting the fish hook and having to swim to a new body when you die bring a smile to your face, and figuring out puzzles is a challenge I was always happy to undertake.

On the down side, navigating the massive sea can be a chore, as you're never quite sure what's an obstacle and what's part of the foreground. The solution? Swim forth and see if you bump into it. As always, Sea of Glomp encourages you to try things out in order to see the results. Unfortunately for gamers who weren't raised on the tough-as-nails adventure games of yore, frustration may set in early on. If you stick with it, though, Sea of Glomp won't fail to reward you.

Inventive, compelling and stuffed with creative ideas. Welcome back, nostalgic adventuring!

THE SHOCHU BAR
Developed by: Gotmail/Idac & SG lab Inc. (A Square Enix subsidiary)
Released in: 2007
Genre: Point & Click
Download Size: 15.5 MB (Flash)
Download Link: http://gs.gotmail.jp/
Many stories play out in a bar. It's almost like a theater.

One night, there might be a woman trying to gain the affections of a kind man, while the next night someone might be looking into the smoky hazy, thinking of someone far away....

The bar owner knows that their problems are, to some extent, basically the same. He tries to make each one a special Shochu cocktail, to ease their pain.

This is the story of one such person, a woman who was considering leaving her boyfriend for good. She was confused, and desperate.

The owner told her, "Can you come here tomorrow night? I have a special message that I want to give you. Maybe it can help you make the right decision."

The next night, the woman came back to the bar.

Awesome. I love the old point and click adventures. Unfortunately I bet zero of these are Mac friendly.

Thanks for the list though.

There are a few that work on Macs. Some of them are Flash, and then a few of them use the AGS engine, and if you download the Windows installer, and then download the AGS software, you can play those. I noted on a few that they were Mac or Linux compatible, but some of the other ones might work too.

Here's the AGS website:
http://new.bigbluecup.com/acdload.htm
You can download the software and hundreds of more games there.

Is that 'Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw' the same guy that does Zero Punctuation on The Escapist? I love his sense of humor that I get in short doses every week. I assume so, otherwise it's quite a coincidence.

I can't click, I'm at work. Are these games free? Is it specified if some of them are?

I am retarded. I was scrolling for so long I forgot the name of the thread. Free P&C sounds great, and I can't wait to try these.

Yep, it's the same guy. His games are of the mystery/horror variety, so not really much humor there, but they are some of the more interesting ones that I've come across.

The four Chzo games (5 Days a Stranger, 7 Days a Skeptic, Trilby's Notes, and 6 Days a Sacrifice). I just beat those, and I'd give them a strong recommendation.

Re: Would you like some free adventure games? I know you would...

I debated on if I should bump this thread or not, because the game I am talking about actually cost a few bucks, but it is an adventure game like the ones above, and it actually floored me on how good it was. I can not recommend it enough.. (also, this is a great thread that should be bumped from time to time)

Downfall
http://www.harvesterindiegames.com/

This game is starting to win some awards. I first read about it at Wadjet Eye games, the maker of the fun Blackwell games, but this game is in another league. It is violent, sexual, and shocking. Not for someone under 18 for sure. It is fun, and slowly builds. The thing is, I am not going to sit here and tell you that these sort of games are equal to a big budget game like Mass Effect 2, or Uncharted 2, but what I am going to tell you that this game would win awards if it was an XBLA game. That is if Microsoft would even allow this game with its content on there.

I will also say that the game has one of, if not THE best endings in a game ever. Holy Shit. There is a demo, and the game itself is 9.99. Do yourself a favor and try the demo at least, and if you love these kind of games, buy it.
