Best PC freeware games ...

I did a search, but I didn't find any threads dedicated to only freeware games. In case one is out there, sorry in advance.

As a budget gamer, I was just curious about what are the best pure freeware games (excluding shareware, roms, warez, etc.) out there, in y'all's opinion.

I was going to list games I have been playing regularly on the PC. I encourage y'all to give 'em a Google.

1. Thrust Xtreme - Lunar Lander-esque title with very slick, color vector (?) graphics.

2. Guxt - a vertical shooter from the celebrated freeware programmer Pixel (Cave Story, Ikachan). Game plays in a small window and is mostly in monochrome, but it kicks butt.

3. Saucelifter - a cool Choplifter clone where you control a flying saucer retrieving your peeps from captivity. Don't let the silly name (or my description) fool you - it's good stuff.

4. Continuum (formerly Subspace) - an online-only, top-down spaceship shooter similar to SpaceWar or Asteroids. Several servers are available (which can hold hundreds of players) with huge battlefields. Great control and weapons, along with neat team and text-chat options.

A couple of honorable mentions include Soldat, a real-time "Worms meets Quake" title, and Generally, a custom/mod-friendly Super Sprint influenced game. Soldat is free, but other features can be unlocked if you register.

I've really gotten into all of these games (I usually play one or two of them daily - I'm a big fan of arcade, high score saving titles), and I'm just wondering if y'all have given them a spin or what else is out there in the land of freeware games.

Several of these sound great. I used to love Lunar Lander and Super Sprint for example.

I'm at work, or I'd be playing these right now.

Forgot to mention La-Mulana, an Indiana Jones-type adventure game.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La-Mulana

La-Mulana is a little bit too tough for my taste, but it is very well done and a lot of folks like it. Boasts MSX-inspired graphics.

I mentioned Cave Story earlier as an afterthought, but most people consider that one of the best freeware/independent games out there. Certainly the best "Metroidvania" option for the PC. I have played it for a few hours; enjoyed it very much, but I've been playing more simple fare as of late. Still, it has neat pixel graphics and (from what I have heard) a solid story.

Privateer Gold a remake of wing comander privateer. There is also another group that did a remake that some people think is better. Can't go wrong with either.

I made a thread about freeware adventure games a while back. I'll just recap some of my favorites from the list:

BENEATH A STEEL SKY
Developed by: Resolution Software
Released in: 1994
Genre: Point & Click/Sci-Fi
Download Size: 7.3 MB Minimum (63 MB Maximum)
Download Link: http://www.scummvm.org/downloads.php (Requires ScummVM)
The game takes place at an unknown point in a dystopian future in Australia, where the Earth has been significantly damaged by pollution or nuclear fallout. The game's backstory is introduced via a comic book, drawn by well-known comic artist Dave Gibbons, that tells the story of a young boy called Robert who is the sole survivor of a plane crash in "the Gap" (the name applied to the Australian Outback at the time of the game). Too young to fend for himself, Robert is adopted by a local group of Indigenous Australians, who teach him the skills he needs to survive in this harsh new environment; they name him Robert Foster, partly due to him being fostered by them and also because of the discovery of an empty can of Foster's Lager, an Australian beer, found near him at the crash site.

After Foster has reached adulthood, he is kidnapped and his tribe annihilated by storm-troopers sent from Union City by its all-powerful computer LINC. Interestingly, Union City mentions prominent suburbs and train stations found within Australia's largest city, Sydney, leading some to speculate that Union City was once Sydney. This was confirmed in a 2005 interview with the Australian gaming magazine, PC PowerPlay.

Foster manages to escape from his captors as the helicopter transporting him back to Union City crashes just after entering the dome, leaving him and his robot friend, Joey, to find out why they were brought there and where to go next.

Joey's personality is stored on a small circuit board, which can easily be inserted and removed from many types of robot bodies. This allows Joey to change bodies as the situation requires, provided his circuit board is not damaged. Joey, however, is not always happy about Foster's choice of body for him.

I spent a chunk of today playing Nexuiz. It's exciting, fast-paced and well-programmed. With the default settings my fps is consistently over 100. Online, my ping hovered between 90-100 and yet I felt no lag at all.
