What do you like about the console(s) you don't own?

I've been thinking a lot about whether I will buy another console at some point in time. Right now, money is tight, so that won't be happening anytime soon. I currently only own the Wii (of current gen consoles), so when I consider another console I look at what I like about the other consoles that my current console doesn't have or doesn't do.

So here we go:

360
1. Xbox Live Arcade. New/original downloadable games is my number 1 reason for wanting a 360... though Wii is getting the same next year.
2. Game library. The 360 definately has a few titles I'm really interested in. I'm not a big FPS fan, but even Bioshock intrigues me.
3. Downloadable content (movies, tv shows, etc.).

PS3
1. The all-in-one aspect. I like the fact that it's (somewhat) a PS1, PS2, PS3, DVD, CD?, and BD player. It's probably the most appealing feature to me.

PS3 -- blu ray playability

JasonF 09-06-07 02:42 PM

I have a 360, which I bought primarily because of the game library and its processing power as compared to the Wii.

That said, the Wiimote looks really neat, and I like some of Nintendo's IP (Zelda and Metroid in particular). If I had more time to game, I'd probably pick up a Wii at some point.

Nothing about the PS3 really appeals to me. I'm not ready to commit to an HD format for DVD, and the game system doesn't seem to offer anything I'm not getting from my 360.

Playstation 3
It's a Bluray player, a PS3, a PS2, a PSX, a cure for cancer, a media center, a marketplace, an interactive community, and with some modifications, an easy bake oven. Additionally, it's a nice piece of hardware with a lot of future potential. Plus it seems far more reliable than my Xbox360.

Reason I don't own one: I have a PS2 so the backwards compat goodness means little, current multi-platform games work better on other platforms (oblivion being a noteworthy exception, but when all is said and done... I still preferred it on PC), don't like the dual shock for FPS games (though KB+M support will remedy that... but I actually like first person shooters on controllers, just not the dual shock.), I can't justify the cost, and biggest of all, the current and upcoming software lineup is lackluster. And while novel, I don't see myself ever actually using @Home. And I really don't like the design.

Hopefully by the time the system is an actual viable gaming platform, the price will be a little more in-line with what I'm willing to spend on it. (- $200) and heck, maybe a redesign will be thrown in.

Atari 2600
Cutting edge graphics and sound are unmatched in the home entertainment arena.

I don't have a PS3. But I LOVE how it is region free (for games, at least).

You've hit all the high notes. The 360 for the library of games. Nintendo for their I.Ps, and PS3 for BD.

For me, it's the PS3, and the only thing I really miss right now is the potential to play God of War III.

When I upgrade to an HDTV in a couple weeks, it'll be a much more tempting purchase for me for the obvious reasons, but as a GAME machine, it doesn't offer me much that I can't get on the 360.

Ditto for me. The PS3 is priced way too high for someone like me who does not care about Blu-ray movies. I will get one eventually, but not anytime soon.

I don't have a Wii because I don't care about cutesy Japanese games and that makes up 95% of the Nintendo library. I do like the Wiimote concept though. It would be so much better than analog sticks for FPS games.

Huh?

Oops, I totally misread the topic.

PS3 - Bluray, reliable hardware, and region-free.

Pretty much every Nintendo IP is cutesy, except for Metroid IMO.

Who cares about gameplay...if it ain't got blood and tits, it ain't worth playing!

boredsilly 09-06-07 04:17 PM

Wii: The control scheme seems interesting, but more than anything it's the first party games. That's probably the only reason I'll buy a Wii when I get one (whenever that is). I will probably find more to like, but with Nintendo consoles it's always about the first party games for me.

PS3: The PSN looks to have some neat titles coming to it soon. I would like to get my hands on some of them, but I have no plans to buy a PS3. Also Metal Gear if that stays on the PS3 only.

I actually wish 360 had more of those kinds of titles. I guess it isn't viable though. While they're fun, games like Halo and Gears aren't relaxing to me in the same way that Viva Pinata or a Mario game is.

Nah, I am not like a teenager who tries to be "cool" by playing only violent M rated games. :)

My favorite games of all time are the Thief series (my username comes from those games). Thief's objective is NOT to kill, but to loot places while avoiding combat.

I just find most Japanese games to be rather boring. The definition of "fun gameplay" varies on the user. Not everyone enjoys the same things.

Groucho 09-06-07 04:32 PM

But you said you didn't like the games because they were "cutesy" not because of the gameplay.

Decker 09-06-07 04:45 PM

I now lack only a Wii. I would like to get one, mainly for the large stable of kid's games. My 6 yr old is pretty game-phobic; she's terrified of messing up or making a mistake. I would really like to get the system so that she could see that the bowling or ping pong game isn't too complicated for her and that we could actually play games together (she did play a little Lego Star Wars with me, but she didn't really understand how to control it. I suppose I'll get one some day for us, but since I'll be driving home with a new PS3 and a redesigned PSP in the trunk, I figure it'll have to wait a while...

I admit that big-headed, anime-ish, cartoony, etc graphics turn me off. They could make a cel-shaded cartoony FPS with tons of bloody violence and naked chicks everywhere, and I still wouldn't play it. To me, graphics are a big deal. A game has to have both good graphics and good gameplay for me to play it.

However, that doesn't mean I am a graphics whore. I don't need a game to be HD ultra-realistic like Gears of War or Bioshock. I still play really old games like the afore-mentioned Thief series with its blocky PS1-era polygons. I am currently playing through No One Lives Forever, another decade old game. I can tolerate blocky polygons, but I can not tolerate cartoony graphics.

As for Japanese gameplay, I find most of it boring. I hate JRPGs. I like American-style RPGs like Elder Scrolls and D&D. Platformers make up another big section of Japanese gaming, and I don't like platformers at all. I also don't like quirky games like Okami. The only Japanese games I play would be action games like Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and Ninja Gaiden. My game library consists of American-style RPGs, action games, and FPS, and very very little else. Yeah, I am a picky gamer.

dvdsteve2000 09-06-07 07:17 PM

I own all three, but I wanna play too, so...

360--Love the games, the upcoming games, the arcade, the controller, the HDDVD player, and the unrivaled online play.

PS3--BluRay!! That's all I use it for, and I don't care if I ever play games on it, I love it.

Wii--Not my cup of tea. My kids play it sometimes when they aren't playing the 360 (H2, GH2, Oblivion, etc...). Friggin' Wario Ware! Just hearing it makes me wanna kick my cat & punch my dog! Too cartoon-ish for me also, but I'm not here to bash. I do play the bowling from time to time (because the wife makes me).

Legolas 09-06-07 07:55 PM

I own them all, so, uh... I like that I don't have to dust the consoles I don't own? :)

PS3 - Backwards compatibility with PS2 games, generic hard drive, potential update aspect.

All of them!? You have a ColecoVision? An Atari 5200? A Turbographix 16? I think not!

Hmm, good points. I also like the PS3's graphics.

PopcornTreeCt 09-06-07 10:42 PM

I always wished I had a SNES. Growing up I had a Sega Genesis and it seemed to be one or the other. Now I make a valiant effort to have both systems even though PS3 has yet to prove its worth.
