Satellite internet pretty much blows for online gaming.

Satellite internet is terrible for online gaming. I would strongly recomended Cable, DSL, or FIOS (if it's in your area).

i would get that if i could but i live in a EXTREMELY rural area. Satellite internet is the only "high speed" internet we can get. Would 1.5/mbps be faster?

Absolutely. I'm running 1.5mb on DSL right now and I don't have any lag problems. I don't host games very often though. It's a little slow for that.

Satellite will be very laggy regardless of your speed.

Yep, you want your latency to be as close to 0 as possible... your latency is what is killing you.

Yeah, it wouldn't help in regards to Satellite. Essentially the latency is going to be high regardless of how much you upgrade your download or upload speeds.

You're basically stuck. I used to tell users at my old position that even 56K dial up would be better for online gaming then Satellite.

Satellite internet isn't really usable for gaming. It has a very high amount of latency - caused by transit time to and from the satellite as I understand it.

Do you have a 56k phone line for uploading, or is it two-way satellite? You might be able to get a tolerable ~100ish ping via the 56k upstream.

we used to have 56k dial-up internet but we switched. We still have the phone line though but it is not connected to the satellite. When i play Gears of War, i lag horribly, will it be like this for all games or is Gears of War a game that requires a lot lower latency than others. Also, i really just want to get my internet as fast as possible by the time Halo 3 comes out(20 days and counting).
