Halo 3: How Microsoft Labs Invented a New Science of Play

It's fairly long so I'm not going to copy/paste it, but it's kind of interesting.

Read the first page, that was enough for me. It is interesting though.

I stopped reading here:
Midway through the first level, his test subject stumbles into an area cluttered with boxes
Hurray! More crates.

I just finished reading and was coming to post it. The entire article is a fascinating read on the inner workings of Bungie. Especially on how they are trying to craft the perfect game in Halo 3.

Many developers have neglected the TTC (time to crate) in recent years, so it's nice that Bungie is focusing on what really makes a great game.

Xenosaga totally covered the crate basis for the last few years, ever since the Soul Reaver games stopped.

This is a very interesting article, and it's neat to read about how they address the various issues that crop up.

On another note, there is an option to click "full page" at the bottom and get the entire article on one page, which helps with the reading.

That is some pretty cool stuff. Almost makes me want to get the SE of the game so I can see some behind the scenes stuff.

I took part in one of these play tests at Microsoft. However, I'm not allowed to discuss the game or even reveal the name of the upcoming sequel in a popular first-person shooter franchise.

I did a number of play tests before I moved out of the Seattle area. It was great. You'd play games for an hour or two, answer a few questions, then get a free MS product as payment. I always picked Office, which I would then sell to a guy who lived by me. I'd end up with $250 for playing games, many of which hadn't been released yet, for two hours.

Read this in the actual Wired magazine a few days ago. Great read and it was pretty interesting to me. A lot of games would benefit by finding and removing certain choke points.
