Id has only ever made pure FPS games. Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake and the like. Rage will be like those games, not at all like a FPS/RPG hybrid like Fallout 3.

It's definitely FPS first, and an RPG at a much lesser degree. But of course, it's the biggest departure ID has taken ever. I think people expecting a Borderlands type experience will be disappointed.

Good news : RAGE sounds like a huge game. Bad news : Per Joystiq:
Rage requires 3 discs on Xbox 360, 8GB install on PS3, tolerance from fans
by Jessica Conditt on Sep 25th 2011 7:30PM
Rage will span three discs on Xbox 360 and require an 8GB install on PS3, id Software creative director Tim Willits has confirmed. It was rumored that Rage would have a large install and multiple discs on 360, but it seemed as if id was leaning toward a slim-and-trim two-disc set, stating that a separate multiplayer disc-swap would be "fail." id didn't have to pick a disc number for the PS3 version of Rage, effectively utilizing the Blu-ray drive to hold all of the game's gigs, something that Willits seemed very pleased about:
"Sony was great," Willits said. "Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don't allow every game to do that. So definitely, hats off. What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level. What is nice about the PS3 platform is that it's just one platform. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it's all the same. Some of the other systems you have... should I install it on my 360? Should I not install it? So yes, it's very nice."
For 360 versions, Willits said id recommends installing the game to the hard drive, or if you don't have the space for all 22GB, after installing and finishing the first half of the game from disc one, uninstall it, and then install disc two. There isn't a reason to disc-swap after completing the first half, and "you don't really need to install the multiplayer disc if you're really tight on hard disk space," Willits said.

Bad news? I don't see bad news. I see par for the course on both systems. Nothing here is a surprise to anyone that knows anything. If 360 people are really so annoyed with getting up twice during a game, the ps3 is there. You just sacrifice other platform-specific things.

22gb is huge. I have a 120gb drive and getting 22 to fit will require deleting a ton of stuff. I'm not complaining though. The game looks awesome.

Installing on the 360 is optional though. Is the 8gb on the ps3?
Even on the 360, you only need to install one disc at a time. 6gb each time isn't bad. Just extend the disc-changing time by 10 minutes to install the next disc.

It sounds like PS3 has bigger texture files for more detail. Or am I misreading? I thought I had previously read they were the same game for consoles.

It sounds like he's saying the 8GB installation is being used for the textures, while the cutscenes and whatever else is using all that space is left on the disc. On the 360, you have to install the entire game (or at least a full disc) or nothing at all.

Lots of games have mandatory installs on the PS3. The Blu Ray laser isn't as fast as a DVD one, so many PS3 games have required installs in order to run correctly, otherwise it might not be able to stream off the textures in real time. I wouldn't necessarily read anything else into that.
