Sure takes the pressure off of Microsoft. I wonder if they knew Sony's plan would amount to essentially a NO-OP and decided to just ride out these 2 or 3 weeks.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves has told GamesIndustry.biz that PlayStation 3 will be the clear leader in the next-gen console market within the next nine months.
"PlayStation 3, you will see, will be far and away the winner when you look at it by March '08. They really, really will," he predicted.

Good news to those on the fence, it will take 9 months to clear out the existing 60GB anyway. I wonder what kind of kool-aid Mr. Reeves is drinking. Even if MS didn't sell a single console starting today, that means Sony would have to sell 7 million in 9 months to even catch up. So if you factor in MS selling a mere 3 million between now and then, Sony would have to sell 10 million by March to be on even ground and even more than that to be a "clear leader." Sounds just a tad unrealistic to me.

At this rate, I will NEVER own a PS3. Not because I don't want a PS3, I really do want one, but I will NEVER pay such an outrageous price tag no matter what. I really want Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, God of War 3, and Lair, but if the PS3 never gets to within my price range, I can live without them.
Everyone knows the "magic" price point is $200-$300. If Sony keeps dropping their lower-end model and keeps sticking with that insane $600 price tag they WILL lose. The average consumer will never buy it. It does not matter if they have God of War 3, 4, and 5 and half a million other AAA exclusives. The average consumer is not going to pay 600 fucking dollars for a fucking video game machine.

I was thinking about getting one yesterday, when I heard an employee at Babbages say the used 20gb's are now $350. But I just hate supporting Sony after dumb ass decisions.
Even my PSP is sitting around waiting for Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow to come out. And now I read SF Dark Mirror is coming out for PS2. God, I got a PSP for these 'exclusives'

Babbage's is still around? I thought EB bought them out and in turn GameStop bought EB out.

They did, but they kept the name the same. At least here.
Yeah I heard the girl telling a customer that Used 60gb was $450, and 20gb was $350. I didnt have time to really inquire, but im going to stop at another today, (that online shows instock) to check.

I can't believe Sony could be so stupid. The really sad thing is that the PS3 really is a great machine. The company is doing everything it can to ensure it fails.

They were just starting to reverse their image with gamers and the media outlets too.

The only way this would make any sense at all is for the 80GB to drop in price (to $499) as soon as the 60GB stocks run out. That would also jive with what Capcom and a few analysts have said about a second PS3 price cut. Maybe as the 60GBs start to disappear, they will lower the remaining few to $399 with the 80GB at $499. This would assure a PS3 could be had for $499.
This is likely just a way for Sony to get rid of the EE once and for all from every unit. While we dislike the decision, it would save them a lot of money. And they probably see the 360 doing well with software-only emulation.
But if they don't drop the 80GB as soon as the 60GBs are gone, this will be yet another horrible decision by Sony.

The only way I could see them lowering the 80GB to $499 is if a 100GB model were to come out.
I suspect that next spring the same thing will happen. A $500 price cut for the 80gb and no game and the 100gb and game are $600.
If Microsoft would have dropped the price, that would have been a huge blow to Sony. I guess Sony can't handle getting good press after the E3 event.

Numbers like that don't matter. 60,000 discs is the top selling #? Almost no one cares. Blu-ray/HD-DVD continue to be the next laserdisc - not the next DVD.
