Good game controllers for my PC?

Ok, I haven't bought a game for my PC since I was a kid, so I'm not up to speed on this. I know that game controllers can be purchased for my PC, I've seen them at Circuit City before. Are they all crappy, do they not work with some games, what's the deal?

Is there any brand or type of controller that is "the one" to have?

Get the wireless 360 controller and the wireless gaming receiver. The 360 controller is a really good controller for console style games and a lot of people like it for FPS games, although I think nothing beats a mouse/keyboard for FPS's and strategy/sim games. Apparently a lot of new games already have it configured and this will probably only increase with the "Games for Windows" branding.

if you buy shadowrun for vista this week (circuit city), they give you a free wireless transmitter to use a wireless 360 controller

not sure if that interests you

third the 360 controller....and most popular pc games have third party freeware that will customize the controlls for the 360 device

I also recommend the 360 controller. I use it on Gametap all the time, and it works like a charm (trying my hand at playing through Psychonauts (again)... see if I can stay interested this time)

I use a modified Xbox 1 controller.
