Either something like Tetris or Counter-Strike for me.

Rollercoaster Tycoon
Theme Hospital
Warcraft 2 and 3
Starcraft
any Civilization game
Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3
Baldur's Gate series (the original PC games not the craptastic console versions)

They are all the video game equivalent of crack.

Rollercoaster Tycoon was one of the single most addicting games ever, there's something oddly entertaining about creating a great park, getting lots of guests, and watching them perish on one of your creations.

I guess I just don't have an addictive personality. The closest I can recall is playing Zork for HOURS at a time back in high school.

WoW without question... It was all consuming and this is coming from a guy with a professional job and a family. I couldn't imagine what would have happened if this game came out when I was in high school or college, I wouldn't have done ANYTHING else. I would actually feel a rush when I was at the login screen.

Other than that old school games were pretty addicting, MOO, X-Com, Civ

There have been so many games through my life that have been totally addictive. When i was a boy growing up in England games like Turbo Esprit, Skool Daze, Jetpac, Underwurlde (in fact any of the Ultimate games), Scuba Dive and more for my Spectrum were amazingly addictive. Then for my Atari St i was addicted to Dungeon Master and Oids. The Amiga had too many to mention, but Paradroid 90, Shadow of the Beast, Stunt Car Racer, Supercars 1 and 2, Kick Off 2 were all top class. Since then i have been addicted to the GTA series, Mercenaries, Crackdown, Unreal Tournament, Tetris.......there are just too many to mention.

I think the two games overall that i can come back to at any time and never get bored of are Unreal Tournament and Deus Ex. Both just incredible and still stand the test of time.

Growing up I would say the following:

Super Mario Brothers (at home)
Gauntlet (arcade)

I guess I need to add the following as well:

Street Fighter II (SNES)
MK I & II (also SNES)

I played the hell out of those three games. Knew every special on SFII, and every move, fatality, babality, friendship, etc for MK I & II.

Everquest. I only played for a year, but it was really out of control. I didn't want to do anything else--going to a movie or similar pissed me off because it took me away from playing, and I got way too little sleep during that year.

I've played WoW much longer, and possibly even more total hours, but if I'm interrupted it's not a big deal (of course it helps that I don't really do instances).

Crackdown, by a long-shot, at least until I maxed out my character (and I've been playing video games since '81). I guess there's a reason it's called Crackdown...

I guess you don't like strategy games and WRPGs because the games I listed are the absolute best in those genres.
