Had me thinking it was a more drastic hardware limition, the fact is most the live arcade games are already limited by hdd (in a different way), they need to just stamp it with a "REQUIRES A HDD TO PLAY!". The BluRay comment seems tacked on.

I say fuck the 360 owners who were too stupid to buy a core and not get a hard drive. GTAIV will sell millions of copies, even if they do alienate those core users.
Why not just make it a 2-disc game on the 360 and limit the areas you can go? Ie if you are on disc 2, close off areas that are not stored on the second disc. Or if they want to screw non-hard drive owners like I said above, have the game install data on the hard drive so that you won't need to limit areas you can go.

Somehow I don't see DVD space as being the big issue.

I just hope the PS3 version is developed separately to optimize for its hardware. I returned Marvel UA on the PS3 because of horrible frame rate issues and other games like FEAR have similar issues. I don't know if this is due to those games being ports of the 360 version, but if the 360 continues to be the lead sku the games on PS3 are going to suffer badly for it.

Totally loaded question. Of course there's going to be limitations.

Here's the full (or what was available on the above link) quote.. which was a lamely loaded question by PlayStation magazine.. and the somehow the title of this thread forgot to mention the guy's second statement. Ah, sensationalism..
During an interview with our partners in crime at Official PlayStation Magazine, Rockstar's creative vice president Dan Houser was asked: "On PS3 you've got a guarantee that every machine is going to have a hard-drive and, with Blu-ray, you've got plenty of storage, whereas on Xbox 360 there's no guarantee of a hard-drive and you're working with the DVD format. Does that create limitations?" To which he replied, "Yep."
He continued, "To be honest with you we haven't solved all those riddles yet." The difficulties aren't limited to working on Microsoft's box, as Houser explains that "both have enormous challenges" and that "both have their own particular pleasures and pains".

Since they can go with a DVD-9, I doubt space will be a huge deal.
As for HDD versus no HDD: how much space are games allowed to use of the HDD on the PS3 versus Xbox360 w/HDD? I would think they could make it so the game will just run slower (ie load times between areas like in GTA3, VC) for those without a HDD and be seemless with a HDD.

I wish I could pull out the post where I said this was going to happen (before the Xbox360 came out).
The HD should be standard, the Sony model is the way to go, if you want 2 SKUs, have a 20GB and a 60GB.
Now we are going to get a crippled game just so they can sell a cheaper system.

I do agree that 360 should have come standard with a HD -- or at least the cheaper should have had a decent sized flash drive. However, I don't see why developers couldn't make a game for the 360 that requires a HD, unless Microsoft themselves won't let it happen. I imagine most 360 owners have the HD anyway.
Didn't one of the Final Fantasy games for the PS2 require a HD purchase?

Like I stated in my post, I don't think the game will be crippled (or I guess I should say I hope it isn't) but it most definitely will have longer load times because of the HDD. Every game I've tried that is on both system loads faster on PS3.

Final Fantasy XI required the HDD for PS2 but it came with the HDD when you bought it. It only needed it because it was a MMORPG.

It probably won't effect much other than load times though. Oblivion definitely loads faster on PS3 because of the standard HDD but every other aspect of the game is basically the same.
All they have to do is break the game up into segments that load like they did on the PS2 which didn't have a HDD. Then have those segments preload and have no loading time on HDD versions.

I agree, they could even make a special HDD bundle just for this game. Buy the game + HDD for $100 or something.
