So how's this new dashboard update (is it even available yet)?

And did it fix the issues with the HDdvd drive?

Still not out yet, hopefully sometime this week.

slop101 05-07-07 12:04 PM

hmmm... I thought it was supposed to be today.

KurrptSenate 05-07-07 12:05 PM

so what do i do? contact them and they send me another copy, or is this a service I would have to have prior to getting a disc replaced?

xmiyux 05-07-07 12:10 PM

I think they charge you 20$ and send you a new copy.

KurrptSenate 05-07-07 12:14 PM

eh, fuck it then

I already ran out and got another used copy with that buy 2 get one free deal

DJ_Longfellow 05-07-07 01:03 PM

I would still contact them, you may get lucky....sucks that your 360 got hungry though.

KurrptSenate 05-07-07 01:20 PM

yea, I suppose it would be interesting to hear what they have to say. I suppose it would be worth getting another copy for 20 bucks, if only to sell one of the copies

edstein 05-07-07 01:36 PM

If your system ate your disc one time don't you think it will do it again? It might be worth calling microsoft about getting the system serviced or replaced.

KurrptSenate 05-07-07 01:39 PM

it actually ate the disc a total of 2 times (first time made a weird ring the whole way around the outer edge of the disc, but still played. Second time, it made a huge scuff)

At this point, I'm really not trying to think/worry about it. I'm hoping its just an isolated incident at this point.

I'm sure it doesn't help that this game has been played more than every other game I own/have owned.

Mopower 05-07-07 01:55 PM

I'd probably put the system horizontally if it keeps eating discs in the vertical position but that's just me.

KurrptSenate 05-07-07 02:14 PM

It's just this one, so far anyway. My other discs seem flawless, so i really don't know where to attribute the blame at this point

xmiyux 05-07-07 03:06 PM

This same exact thing began with me. I spoke with them at length about it and they acknowledged that having it vertical causes a higher chance of this happening. They also implied that vibrations from the floor were causing the disc to jump around and get scratched some (as if i was doing jumping jacks while playing or something). It began with the light circular buffing on 2 games (a rented Viva Piñata and Gears). I got them to replace my unit and they sent it back to me with a brand new drive. Now i have no problems and the disc drive is significantly quieter. From the conversation it seemed like their first recommendation is to keep it horizontal - so vertical must be causing more problems like i was describing.

Same thing here. No other discs, just that two were ever affected. They argued with me a little but when i got them to replace the unit it was worlds better.

KurrptSenate 05-07-07 03:13 PM

thanks for the reply

according to your former post, it sounds like they replaced it with one of the BenQ drives.

my friend is a manager at a game store, who swapped my old, 3 rings of death console for the one I currently have. He would probably do the same if I asked, but I'm hoping this won't be a habitual problem.

I will definitely look into putting it in the horizontal posistion. I'll have to rearrange some sh!t, and my Wii will probably get lonely, but if it solves the problem, so be it

What issues are you referring to? Because my HD-DVD player works like shit. Most times I can't even make it all the way through the movie before it pixilates and freezes and then I have to flip it over and watch the DVD side instead. I'm very disappointed with it and if an update is available, I'd sure like to give it a try.

Wow... are these rental HD DVDs (I've had a few problems with those, especially because the HD-DVD/DVD combos are flippers) or brand new ones?

Save Ferris 05-07-07 03:51 PM

Ive NEVER had any problems with my HD-DVD drive--i play regular DVDs in it as well as about 10 different HD-DVDs ive bought. Never even tried a rental.

Just to let you know I've had zero problems playing HD-DVD's. Even discs with known problems have played fine on it. And the majority of HD-DVD's I watch are from Netflix and are slightly scratched. Well I did have a slight problem with one that was scratched but stopping the disc and hitting play again fixed it. Sounds like you got a bad drive.

Xbox 360 'spring update' available Monday
Friday, May 4 2007, 10:34 BST

By David Gibbon, Gaming Reporter

Bank holiday Monday sees the release of Microsoft's free 'spring update' for the Xbox 360, bringing with it a host of tweaks and improvements to the system.

Most significant will be the ability to chat with friends on Windows Live Messenger using a virtual on-screen keyboard or a new Xbox 360 Text Input Device, which will be available in the summer and is essentially a controller with a built-in qwerty keyboard and a new wired headset.

A number of interface tweaks will also be featured in the update and when a user sends a message a pop-up window will appear allowing you to quickly send a reply.

Some of the improvements featured within the update will include:

Enhanced family settings features for Xbox Live communications enable different defaults for video chat and voice chat.

A new Xbox Live Marketplace blade lets Xbox Live members access the content they seek—whether it is game content or TV shows and movies (available in the United States).

Updates to Xbox Live Arcade allow owners to see which Xbox Live Arcade games their friends are playing and join in the fun. Xbox Live members can also compare progress of leaderboard scores and achievements directly with all friends on their friends list.

A new option in auto downloads will provide access to the entire collection of free, trial-version Xbox Live Arcade games.

New download controls provide access to viewing options by letting users fast-forward, rewind, pause and resume as their video is downloaded from Xbox Live Marketplace.

Extension of the background download functionality will allow owners to set their Xbox 360 console to turn off automatically after downloads are complete.

Switchable aspect ratio will become available during video playback (Auto to Letterbox, Zoom, Stretch, Native).

Bookmarks will now be stored for each video that the user plays remembering the last location in the file as well as the aspect ratio.

Video trick modes (fast forward, rewind, chapter skip) can now be used while downloading Video Marketplace content.

Skip forward and backward functionality has been updated to skip to the next or previous chapter. Each video is divided into 10 chapters allowing users to skip around video content.

Chris

There's a couple little things, but mostly the audio - it's really low.

Decker 05-07-07 05:34 PM

That sounds like a great update, but they don't mention the one of the features I was most excited about -- that we were FINALLY going to get "Achievemnet Unlocked" messages that would tell you what achievement you unlocked and how many GPs you just earned.

Nope. Mine has had problems with three brand new purchased discs (The Departed, Children of Men and Miami Vice). All three were dual-format.

Also, doesn't the noise of the 360 bother you? My wife is continually whining about how noisy the unit is while the HD-DVD is playing. I didn't know if there was anything that could be done about that.

Anyway, I spent $30 on the Best Buy replacement program for the HD-DVD drive. I don't know if I should return it or send it to MS for repair. What I don't want is to send it in and then have MS send me back another model with a different serial number that would invalidate my replacement warranty since either way I was planning on retuning it eventually once the price of stand-alone players dropped precipitously.

Those warranties are to replace the unit, not to get your money back. How were you planning to "return" it?

Replacement warranties at Best Buy allows you to return the product in original packaging and receive a full refund of the purchase price (not refunding the cost of the replacement plan, though) in the form of a voucher that can be used for any purchase at Best Buy. I bought an Xbox in 2003 with a replacement plan, had trouble with it in 2005 and returned it for another one (plus replacement plan and games, thanks to the price drop in the interim), and then in January, returned that replacement xbox and used the credit, a 12% off coupon and $35 cash to get that HD-DVD drive. Never had a problem and now I'm pretty dang happy that I sprung for the $30 warranty because there's no way I'm using this POS in 2009. I might send it to MS for service before that, though.

That is part of this update.

I can verify what decker said. My original Xbox(non 360) died. I bought the warranty at BB. I returned it and they put the money on a gift card. Went back and bought a new one(which was a new bundle with Tetris/Clone wars) and was cheaper as well. Unfortunately the money I saved went back towards a new warranty on the new Xbox.

Looks like the dashboard update is delayed for at least 24 hours or so.

May '07 Update News
I just heard from the Dashboard team that we'll have to wait at least another day for the Dashboard update to be released. The update is not being released in the next 24-hours. That is all I know at this time, but I’ll get more information tomorrow afternoon (PT) and I will update this post as needed. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Edit: As has been pointed out by some community members, the official press release does say the ‘week of May 7th’ for a release time. So we’re well within that so far. It sounds like some folks missed that part, so that’s why I wanted to post this update.

slop101 05-08-07 12:53 AM

Just as well. Could you imagine the cluster-fuck if they released a buggy update?

I would at least try to get another drive. I've watched all 3 of those movies with no problems at all. I heard a lot of people have problems with Children of Men though.

Is this update also supposed to let us see what game is in the tray from the desktop?

If you mean from the dashboard, then yes. As well as how many achievements and GP you have in that game as well.

Six New Titles Coming to XBLA
posted Tuesday, May 08, 2007 9:02 AM by johnporcaro
Six more titles have been announced, coming later this year. From the same press release announcing Double Dragon:

· “Mad Tracks.” This 3-D racing party game from Load Inc. and D3Publisher recalls all the fun of playing with toy cars from childhood. Up to four players can race micro cars in a variety of gameplay modes in familiar settings such as a living room, a restaurant and a toy store.

· “Rush’n Attack.” Also known as “Green Beret,” from Konami Digital Entertainment Inc., this is a faithful next-generation update of this classic coin-op arcade title where the player assumes the role of a special forces agent sent behind enemy lines to infiltrate an enemy military complex and free captured prisoners of war.

· “Soltrio Solitaire.” From Silver Creek Entertainment, this is a collection of 18 different solitaire games, offering co-op and competitive two-player solitaire game modes.

· “Spyglass Board Games.” From Strange Flavour Ltd. and Freeverse, this offers classic versions of the world’s most beloved board games, including chess, checkers, mancala and reversi, as well as the ability to enjoy video chat with friends via the Xbox LIVE Vision camera.

· “Street Trace:NYC.” This is a hover board racing and arena battle game from Gaia Industries Inc. set against the urban wasteland of future New York City. Make your mark on the leaderboards in intense eight-player action over Xbox LIVE, or battle at home through split-screen or single-player tournaments.

· “Undertow.” This is a fast-paced action shooter from Chair Entertainment Group that thrusts players underwater as they battle for control of the oceans, and features a robust single player/co-op campaign and up to 16-player multiplayer action over Xbox LIVE.

Like all Xbox LIVE Arcade games, the above titles will have a free demo that will allow gamers to try out a game before deciding to buy. More details will be available closer to each title’s launch later this year.
