Wii and Big Screen gaming, input needed
Couple of questions.
I have a Mitsubishi 62" DLP TV, that the lamp burnt out, as well as a 70" SXRD Sony that I have as a loaner TV right now, and both seem to have the same problem.
Is it normal for the game to not completely fill the display horizontally? For example, I play Excite Truck and there are the black bars for a couple inches on either side. Same thing happens with Madden, Trauma Center, etc. I know that it is displaying in Widescreen, and my Wii is set to Widescreen as well. This happens on both TVs, different cables, and different Wiis as well.
Second, and along those same lines, does anyone notice a tilt/geometry issue where the display that you do see is not completely square? Let me explain a little better. Like I mentioned above, there are black bars on either side of the screen. The black bars that I see, and not completely straight, and you get a "bowed" picture that resembles bad geometry on a computer monitor.
Are these known issues that I am not aware of? Nintendo's site doesn't state anything about it, that I have seen.

I think that's normal. I would guess that the Wii aspect ratio is a little off for your (and my) display. I've got a 50" plasma and it's got a black inch on each side too.

Yes, as stated above, I have set the Wii to 16:9 and 480p.

This is normal behavior and is well documented. The Wii underscans, meaning that there is a black border around the image to account for the fact that most TVs overscan (cut off the edges off of the picture). Most newer digital displays do not overscan, so the black bars will be visible. It would be nice if games just had unimportant parts of the image there instead of black space as it would look better on newer displays.

focker is completely correct on everything he said. Why they choose to have the black bar instead of unimportant game stuff in that area is beyond me.
