Re: FFXIII Thread of chocobo ranching
12 is one of my favorite games of all time. It's basically a MMO with party members who are AI but follow the "rules" (Gambit system) that you dictate. It had some of the most epic fights in the series; including one which had so many HP, you could leave and come back to the fight without starting over. As long as you left quickly, he didn't regen HP. IIRC, it took me almost a week of a few hours a night to kill him. Final save had over 140 hours.
tl;dr...play it if you get the chance. Also...I've been addicted to 14 since it launched. So YMMV on 12 if you don't like that style of game.

It is completely linear for a looong time until you get to the open world, which allows you to grind. It's such an odd game. They streamlined a lot of the RPG stuff (did you really enjoy going to towns and resting to heal after every few battles? equipping all this different gear just to up a def or att stat? They basically got rid of all that). But the tutorial is basically a few hours long, then 3/4 of the way through the game it opens up.

My main problem with this game was once it did open up, I didn't feel like there was a whole lot of exploring, and what there was didn't do much for the game beyond leveling up to take down the larger monsters. There wasn't anything that enhanced the story at all.
I loved FF12, the gambit system was a lot of fun. FF13 was beautiful, and I liked the non-random battles, seeing giant animals wondering around the field.
