The RPG of it is very light. Everything is basically optional such as items and magic, etc. There's never a lag between puzzles, but it isn't just a straight puzzle as your opponent will use magic to attack you directly or change the pieces on the board.

BTW, have you tried the PC demo?

From an RPG perspective, it is important to upgrade your equipment (helmet, armor, weapon) to succeed. But the main gameplay is pure puzzle. Hopelessly addicted to this game.

I disagree. I got through it just fine with my Helm of the Ram, Mirror Armor, Ultimate Troll Ring, and Erik's Bow. While I obviously upgraded from nothing, I had all of those very early in the game.

You can probably get away with it (not that your equipment is that bad, Helm of the Ram is very nice offensive gear), as long as you play well.

Get the PSP version.

It's not available for PC

Honestly, and I can't believe I'm saying this since I'm a DS fangirl, get the PSP one. Great graphics (I couldn't believe how scary the rat looked compared to the DS version), great sounds, the controls are excellent (I thought it would be a draw to use the D pad for the selection but it isn't), and overall a much deeper experience.

Or do like me and get both

Finished this game today finally. Still can go back and play, but I completed all quests.
Excellent, excellent game. I had a blast on the DS, but whether you get it on that or the PSP just buy it. A+ game.

Rune of Axes + Rune of Gods + Rune of Poison = Godly damage every turn. It is not easy to get the Rune of Gods, then forge the item, but it is well worth your effort!!

Got it for the PSP and loving it so far!

The AI cheats, though!

I feel like the AI doesn't cheat, but the board favors the AI (I guess it is semantics) by dropping good gems to them over you.

They have stated over and over that the AI doesn't cheat. I have no idea, but I found the game fairly easy especially when you start getting some of the more wicked spells.

Yes, the AI cheats. I've been saying it from day 1.

I'm thinking many haven't read some of the interviews where the developers stated, like flashburn said, that the invisible area above the board is generated randomly when the gems drop and that the AI does not cheat at all. Presumably it may be better than many at reading the visible board to plan out a chain of moves but a human could do that just as well with some effort. I know sometimes it seems like the computer gets ridiculous drops from above but many times i also get ridiculous "Heroic Effort" level drops that were total luck.

They even said it doesn't do any "planning" either. It simply just does the best single move possible.

Just started again with a Wizard this time. I'm gonna try to siege and get runes as I go instead of at the end. I'm also going to try not to distribute my skill points until absolutely necessary and even then only on the cheapest stats and leave the rest for gold.

the game doesn't cheat, but you do have to admit that it's irritating when every move you make causes a skull to drop in the appropriate spot for the CPU to hurt you with. Happens to me every damned time on the higher level enemies.

You tell me how it's not cheating when I have 130 hit points and I lose half of them before my first turn.

I would just assume you have horrible luck.
