GTA4 / Grand Theft Auto IV (2008): News, rumors, etc.

Didn't see a thread for this already...

Grand Theft Auto IV

We don't know much. We know it's coming in November of this year 2008 for the PS3 and the X360 and the 360 will have episodic content but that's about it.

Wiki doesn't seem to have much to say.

But then I stumble on this somewhere:

"This leaked pic of a render from Rockstar has the now infamous code name: "Project Cherry Blossom" on it; which as you know is the supposed code name for GTA 4, Grand Theft Auto: Japan."

Spoiler:

HOLY COW!

Anyway - here's a thread for GTA4 Discussion.

<hr>

Info we know, updated as we get it.

Release Date: April 29, 2008

That's some nice looking graphics. I'm not sure if it'll be enough to get me to buy an Xbox or PS3, but it'll probably be enough to make me jealous as I wait four years for the PC port.

I'm sure that even if it's just San Andreas with the addition of skateboards and pogo-sticks it'll be a blast to play.

For some reason I don't buy that image and the 'internal use only' screams fake to me. Maybe it's because of so many other fake images supposedly from GTA4. I guess we will see in 10 days when the trailer is released.

How I understood things was the game engine that drove Table Tennis was a trial to see how feasible some of the things were for GTA IV.

It's obviously just a rumor and one in a long line of possible GTA4 screens. But as Case01 said, we'll see in 10 days.

Trailer is being released here:

Even on current hardware, is there any way that image could be rendered in real time? I doubt it.

Interested to see the trailer. Hopefully, it will be a solid step up in the GTA universe.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I felt that San Andreas was somewhat overrated.

I was late to the GTA 3 race, and played Vice City very shortly after it. By the time I got to San Andreas, it all felt the same to me.

They've definitely milked it with baby steps since GTA III hit so big. Hopefully they've been using those as quick cash grabs while they've been working out all the big upgrades for the "true" sequel. But I wouldn't be surprised to see it just simply a graphical upgrade to what's been successful thus far either.

I like the GTA games, but the controls have always left much to be desired. I felt a lot of the difficult parts of the game were that way because of the controls over anything else. Aiming and shooting were a drag, and the camera was always annoying.

However I always felt the driving was very fun, and San Andreas really impressed with just how much gameworld there was. I have always wanted to visit Japan so I am excited about the new setting, but I want them to fix the controls, and leave out the stupid "mini-plane, mini-copter" type missions which are never fun and always guaranteed controller breakers.

Well, that's the problem with being able to do a few hundred different things in one game.. none of them end up being great. I always thought that was big weakness of the series.. there's lots to do but it's all individually mediocre when you really think about it. Well, that and once you get past causing mindless mayhem, the game primarily ends up being fetch questing.. which can get tedious.

I understand none of them end up being "great" but they could at least make sure they are fun. If you have a bunch of things you can do that are at least decent, then it can make the overall game more fun just due to variety. You see that no one likes those "mini-copter" games so you remove them. You don't make them harder and more frequent. You see people didn't like the control, you adjust and make changes. The third installment should not have the same control as the first. It should improve.

I really enjoyed the games. I thought the driving was as good as racing games, I wish the fighting system was a bit better. The combos were silly. But basically, being able to drive, shoot, and nearly do everything in a city is such a great concept I will continue to keep playing. With a game where you can do so much you start to feel ripped off by other games where you do just one thing.

In an interview with an American television station, Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, said that Nintendo has done all it can to persuade Take-Two Interactive Software to bring the Grand Theft Auto franchise to Nintendo consoles, and it is now up to the third party publisher to decide whether Rockstar Games' immensely popular series will appear on Wii. We should know more later in 2007 regarding this issue.
From www.vgcharts.com

Finally Nintendo is courting Rockstar/Take Two. I would be surprised if this happens and if it does, it's going to be a sad little port compared to the other versions. Still a smart business move to do it.

I thought Crackdown had a good targeting system, especially being able to specifically target people's body parts and the gas tanks and tires on the cars.

That's always been my biggest complaint about the series - hopefully they fix it in this version.

im hoping they do something like godfather (wii version) and give you some kind of 3rd person mode, which allows you to completely control where you aim by moving the cross hair

I started playing GTA when it was an overhead game on the PC. I think I may still have the 20 floppies somplace.

I quit playing GTA:SA when I was forced to fly a plane through a bunch of rings. I hated it and it made me stop playing. I didn't mind flying to fool around, breaking into airports and such, just hated the flying missions. The same goes for VC

I will probably play this one (assuming a 360 release, I haven't been following), but I hope I don't get stuck flying myself to Japan.

I'm hoping for a much tighter combat/anything but driving a car system (bikes/running/etc).

Also, I don't see how they can avoid finally adding online multiplayer.
