I don't buy a lot of games, so I don't own many of them at all. But what's really sad is how many I've never played. I've never played God of War or Shadow of Colossus. I haven't played most of the GBA games. Now I'm thinking I'll pick some up that I missed. Now that I have a Wii, I will start to check out the GC games.

Because the PS2 library is so large, they probably didn't want to put 3 GTA games.

Why is the half of Sim City censored?

Anyway, I suspect they've set some arbitrary deifnitions in terms of what kind of processor and what kind of video card constitutes the last PC Generation, because that sure as heck isn't the list of the top 25 PC games of all time.

The Gamecube list needs Mario Kart: Double Dash. The GBA list needs Drill Dozer and the original WarioWare included as well.

I know exactly how you feel. There are quite a few games listed there that I've never even heard of.

But just like you, I'm looking forward to purchasing some of the GC games on that list now that I have a Wii. I just need to make a trip to go look at some used games.

Here's what they say about the PC list:

When it was decided all of the IGN platform channels of "last generation" would need to put together a Top 25 [Insert Your Platform Here] Games of All Time, we PC guys let out a shudder of dread. While the consoles of last generation have five years of games to pick from for "All Time", we have a considerably larger pool of titles. If we had been smart from the beginning and only used games from the last generation of PC games (Windows XP or DirectX9 probably), things would have been easier. Unfortunately for us, the whole "Of All Time" thing basically sent us back to the beginning of PC games.
With such a large catalog of games, it's pretty easy to find 25 games that are worthy of contention as the best. In fact, we had to narrow the list to 25 from about 90 games that all were good enough to at least be brought up in conversation. So we had to make some decisions about what would be included. We came up with some loose criteria to work with to help. We looked at how good the game was in general, the kind of impact it had on the industry, and lastly, how fun it is to play by today's standards. The durability test was important to us since there have been so many excellent titles worthy of noting since last we tried to piece together a list like this in 2000. If we had just gone by importance, we'd have a hard time including anything but the games that started genres or pushed them into mass popularity.

One of the other fun problems we encountered was the overabundance of strong series and franchise titles. Some of the series released over the years could have had multiple entries on the list, forcing other titles off. So for that reason we've decided to limit the number from each series of games to one. In some cases it'll be the original, in others it'll be a sequel depending on a variety of issues, but mostly which game we consider to be better overall.

We're quite positive this list is going to generate plenty of love and, more likely, hate because even with all of the amazing games on this list, there were many more shut out, much to our disappointment. Some that didn't make the list are important games that just aren't necessarily fun by today's standards. In any case, the list we came up with is full of amazing titles, all of which we still play today, at least on occasion.

If you disagree with our list or would simply like to bitch about one of your favorite games that was left off by the time the countdown ends on Friday, go ahead and write in to the PC team.

In any case, we'll be revealing five picks each day of this week until we reach #1, which is of course best gam teh evar. Enjoy!
So it sounds like they didn't really have too many boundries. I'm not a big PC gamer. I mostly played RTS and strategy games -- never really played RPGs, etc.

My favorite PC games (of all time) would probably include some old school Sierra games (Kings Quest, Police Quest, Space Quest, etc) which they didn't include at all, 3 Blizzard franchise titles -- in my case: Starcraft, Warcraft 3, and Diablo 2, some turn-based strategy games like Age of Empires and Civilization, some other RTS games like Command and Conquer. I never played Half-life 2, but Half-Life was groundbreaking -- pretty much the first FPS to introduce a story. The original Prince of Persia. These are the games that took up most of my time growing up. Makes me want to look through some of my old PC games now.

I agree about the PC list. A lot of games that are just "good" and not even close to being best ever.

The console lists are pretty good. Aside from a few position changes (I would put Jet Set Radio Future in my top ten XBox titles and Okami a little higher in the PS2 list...) the lists look fairly conclusive.

You absolutely read my mind. One of the first series that I thought of was the Kings Quest series. The first two for the Apple IIC I played so much. I absolutely loved those games. They were challenging, fun, maybe even a little educational and were long games to try to finish.

Many years ago (but also many years after those first Kings Quest games), I had a Kings Quest game on my computer, maybe V or VI or something. I tried to play it but it just wasn't as good as the ones I remembered or as intuitive. I pretty quickly reached a point where I knew what I need to do to move on but couldn't figure out how to do it. I guess if that happened now, I would just go to gamefaqs, but back then, I wasn't aware of such sites and just quit.

I also loved the game for the Black Cauldron, much better than the movie and a very similar style to the Kings Quest games.

I also wouldn't have minded seeing Civilization on there. I never completely mastered that game, still tons of things I knew I wasn't doing right (I tended to get bored and just conquer everyone), but it was a wonderful time waster. Many hours were spent on that game.

I don't own a PS2, Xbox or PC (one for gaming) so the only games I have are for the GameCube and Game Boy Advance.

GameCube:

21. Super Monkey Ball 2
18. Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader
14. Soul Calibur II
9. Super Mario Sunshine
7. F-Zero GX
4. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
3. Super Smash Bros. Melee
1. Metroid Prime

Game Boy Advance:

20. Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap
19. Mario Kart: Super Circuit
3. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past with Four Swords

The next time one of the stores around here has a used B1G1 sale, I'll check into it.

I love seeing NFL 2K5 ten spots above Madden 05 (XBOX) and I'm glad to see AOE 2 on the PC list, even though I think it should be a bit higher.

Heres something for yas. If you consider Beyond Good and Evil to be a roughly equivalent game across the 3 last gen consoles, then the fact that it's not present in the PS2 list, 22nd on the Xbox list, and 12th on the GC list, gives you some idea of how IGN considers the relative quality of the game libraries on each machine.

Black Cauldron was a fantastic game. I really miss those Sierra games and hope that they'll make a triumphant comeback on the Virtual Console.

Hmm... I preferred the Xbox last gen, but looking at those lists I only played 7 of the top 25 yet played 14 on the Gamecube list.

How many games were released for each as well. I think PS2 has the largest library and had the largest number of exclusives.

Obviously, if you wanted a system with the largest number of good games, you certainly wanted a PS2. But I don't think it speaks (necessarily) for the overall quality of the games on each system as it does the overall quanity.

Some are hard to play now. The graphics (and game mechanics) almost hurt now. I tried playing the remade Kings Quest VGA and even that was too clunky for me.

Instead, I'd much rather have some really good modern adventure games.

Theseis looks like it might fit the bill. Here's a preview from IGN. It's due in May.

Later, we'll have Alan Wake. Here's the IGN Preview of that game. I'm not sure if it has a release date yet.
