I'm really looking forward to this!! I remember picking up Nights on release day and grabbing the Christmas Nights freebie later that year. It's kind of a relaxing game, and those cool bosses and the operatic music....aaaahh....memories!

This one is looking like more of the same, which is a good thing IMO.

Looks great!!!

NiGHTS Doubles Up
SEGA title to feature two-player mode and "Artificial Life."
by Bozon

September 14, 2007 - To coincide with pre-TGS coverage, SEGA announced today that NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams players will be getting a bit more content than they thought when the final version hits. According to SEGA representatives, NiGHTS "will feature a two-player mode and network support at launch."

While details are still sparse on this feature, the official Japanese site also refers to this addition as "duel" mode, implying that it'll be competitive and not cooperative. In addition to "duel" mode, we got official word from SEGA of America that the game will actually feature multiple two-player modes, some of which will be available only locally, and others that work the full potential of Wii with Nintendo WiFi Connection. Since details at this moment are still relatively secretive, we were able to confirm only one online mode of play, which is a two-player "race" competition. Details of whether or not you can play against only friends, or if a random matchmaking system will be included are still unknown.

As for other details, SEGA also plans to reawaken the Artificial Life (A-Life) feature in NiGHTS, which allows users to control and manage a sandbox environment where you can capture, raise, and combine animals from the Nightopia world.

Details on both "duel" mode and the A-Life system are still pretty sparse, but we'll know more once the Tokyo Game Show kicks off officially. More as it develops.

Wow. That's looking a lot better than the last batch of pics released.

SuperBatMan 09-14-07 02:57 PM

I'm still holding out hope that they delay it until February or March. This game is going to get buried due to Super Mario Galaxy and SSBB.

PixyJunket 09-20-07 03:26 PM

What the hell..?

Bizarrely, tellingly and somewhat amusingly, the Tokyo Game Show demo of NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams makes no use of motion controls whatsoever. The analog stick on the nunchuck controls movement, the A-button speeds you up and.... well, that's pretty much it. While several control schemes are likely to be in the works for the completed game, the lack of Wii-specific abilities seems to worsen the lack of differentiation between NiGHTS and its sequel.

I'd be fine with that. I have too many other games to play as-is.

Around the time it was announced, I thought they mentioned both motion controls and "traditional" controls for the game, depending on the player's preference. My guess is that the motions controls either aren't fine-tuned enough or this build just lacked them, but I'm pretty sure they'll be there on street day.

slop101 12-19-07 11:36 AM

Did anyone get this?

Online reviews are mostly in, and they're mostly middling, with most of them agreeing that the motion controls don't work too well - is that the only control option?

Anyone here play this yet?

StealthStratos 12-19-07 11:42 AM

Haven't played it, but from the reviews I read, you can use the classic controller, which is much preferred over the motion controls.

I was excited about this game, but the reviews seem pretty terrible. The part that really irked me is apparently you can't skip over any of the cutscenes, and if you die on a level, you have to sit through the cutscenes all over again every single time. Ugh.

PixyJunket 12-19-07 12:10 PM

Sonic Team USA. :(

slop101 12-19-07 12:14 PM

Yeah, this bit seems terrible:
"Fail on a boss, and a retry sends you all the way back, complete with all loads, all story sequences, and every stage within that level. Talk about a momentum killer."
And it's still a short 5-hour game? Pass.
Maybe a rental just to look at it...

Supermallet 12-19-07 05:10 PM

Hmm, so word is this isn't worth it? Because I could really stand to not spend another $50 right now.

SteveOVig 12-19-07 07:47 PM

So basically Sega released a game very similar to the original Nights and now it stinks? That sounds about right for gaming and gamers today.

BGPu 12-20-07 03:25 PM

Sega is remaking the original NiGHTS for the PS2 with a Saturn Mode and an enhanced mode, but it's only scheduled for Japan at this moment...

Grrrr. Any game that does that is not worth my time. It's nearly 2008. Can we get rid of unskippable cutscenes? Please???

I think the word (beyond reviews) is that it's pretty good and if you like the original then you'll probably like the new one and it's a great third party effort on the Wii. I think the main problem is that it didn't aspire to do anything beyond what the original did, ten years prior. Browsing a couple other forums, people do seem to be enjoying it thoroughly though. My total lack of respect (or feeling of extreme contempt) for anything Sega has done in the last five years is still making me rent first though..

lordzeppelin 12-20-07 04:26 PM

I wanted to pick this up, but I just sold my Wii. I could give a flying fuck what the reviews say...when I get another Wii after the Holidays calm down, I'm picking this right up.

BGPu 12-21-07 11:04 AM

I picked it up last night & played for an hour or so. I just went with the Gamecube controller, which is not as smooth as the old Saturn pad was for flying but works well. The cut scenes are grating. One of the great things about the original was that it really was its gameplay that made it endearing. It's a good effort and the only thing I feel let down by at this point are the last-gen graphics (the game would be beautiful on the PS3 or 360).

It gives me hope for the PS2 remake of the original, which hopefully will be faithful and not try to add too much junk on the game.

MasterofDVD 12-21-07 08:21 PM

Since my 360 isn't back from repairs yet I figured I would rent this to keep me busy. The cutscene issue means I probably won't have it for long before I grow tired and irritated with it.

PixyJunket 12-24-07 08:56 AM

A good friend of mine got this for me for Christmas, I'll probably give it a spin today or tomorrow.

Superboy 12-30-07 08:07 PM

I love it. Read the original reviews of Nights; they're just as harsh on the original as they are on this game, if not more so. Although, I really have to agree with the scores. This game is not for everyone.

RichC2 05-08-08 01:53 PM

Gamefly has used copies of this on sale for $20.99 and I have $5 in "Bucks" I have to spend on there tomorrow, is the game worth $15.99?
