I am no longer convinced about any of these titles selling systems anymore though. There are a large number of newcomers to gaming who are picking up systems, so an established name means nothing to them. I personally believe that will be a big factor in thise next generation.

However, even for hardcore gamers, Metal Gear Solid has disappointed, Devil May Cry is on its fourth installment, and Heavenly Sword needs to prove itself. Final Fantasy could sell some systems, but even that series does not seem to have the same buzz it once did (based on personal opinion here). I do not think the others will make people buy a system just for it. I have no doubt existing PS3 owners will buy the games, but as to driving new sales, it may not be as much as I have heard people claim.

Add into that the fact that the other two will also have "big guns" coming out this year and next, and it will be more difficult. A game like Halo 3 has more recognition in the casual market I think than even Final Fantasy. I have known, and game with, several people who I'd describe as more casual than hardcore and PS3 titles are not on their lips (although the system interests them purely from a newest factor). However, new franchises like Gears of War are hooking them and they all know and want Halo. Even the Wii is interesting to these action addicts for its approach.

So, again, my personal opinion, but I am no longer convinced of the selling power the PS3 "exclusives." I think Xbox (Halo) and Wii (Mario) currently have more likely candidates than PS3.

Yeah, same here, i already responded in the Official PS3 thread...

Bust my ass

Games like that, we can say no? It's visually appealing (don't know about game play yet). The kids love to watch games (they play, but can't really read...)

The game looks beautiful, but I'm not sure it will sell $600 consoles.

Not to mention the $500 is apparently gone, I've not seen reports of anyone finding one in stores for a long time while the $600 is everywhere.

You can find them online. Best Buy.com has the $500 in stock now.

While I'm quite disappointed with the PS3, it's way too early to call it a bust. No matter how bad the console or how hard to program for it, the software will always define it. The software right now is garbage for the PS3. The Wii selection is only slightly better, but still trash.

The bottom line is that I don't think that any of the consoles are a bust. A bust would be the Sega 32X or the Nintendo Virtual Boy, or Nokia N-Gage. Those are busts in the truest sense of the word. I fail to see where the PS3 could be a bust, unless we're still waiting for the first 'must have' game come Christmas, which will not happen.

The fairest question is, 'Has Sony made some grave mistakes?' and the answer is yes, they have. They are, however, ones that they can recover from with a few great games. One thing they've always done better (well, since sega stopped making hardware) than anyone is fighting games. I, for one, am dying for a good fighting game right now. Not that it will sell consoles, but that was just on my mind.

The problems I see are Sony's marketing approach to this system. It flat out sucks...very bad. Their commercials are the weakest of weak, trying to be 'art' way too hard. They're trying to make it too high-brow...instead of fun. And before anyone gives the 'oh, nintendo is fun' yes, they are, but they are making mistakes too. In fact, it's funny to me, but from a marketing perspective, Microsoft is kicking the crap out of both. Case and point - Remember the Syphon Filter ads where the guys were pleading for a less painful way to die? That was good marketing by Sony. Not the creepy babydoll crying... If Sony was smart, they'd bash the Wii by doing a parody commercial of the Geico caveman playing it, and saying "still playing with last year's tech?" (note, I LOVE Nintendo, but this is war, you know? I play my Wii constantly and didn't own a PS2 until 6 months ago...I went xbox and never looked back for online play). They need something edgy, not fake artsy.

I wouldn't give them the credit for the fighting games though. Those are third-party. Their D-pad doesn't help the genre either, but I know true fighting fans have sticks anyway.

About the only way the PS3 could be a bust is if Sony kills the system tomorrow and nothing from the fall lineup is released.

One of the reports from Kotaku was that BestBuy wasn't going to carry the 20GB version anymore at all.

Well, at this point, i don't care if it sells or not. I already got a PS3 and i only care about new games and that game answered my prayer.

Personally, i don't give a damn about how many PS3s sold. I'm just enjoying my PS3 experience and from that, i think the system speaks itself.

If you care about new games, then you do care about how the PS3 does. The reason it was losing exclusives like VF is the relatively low installed base. If the PS3 doesn't do well (not saying it will or won't) you won't get any new games for it. If you're satisfied with it as a PS2 and Bluray machine, then so be it, though.

Exactly. You want it to sell well so it continues to get good games (unless you're fine with it just being a Blu Ray player).

And if you don't care about sales, why do you keep posting repeatedly in threads about sales? Other than to brag about getting the PS3 and Wii cheap that is.

Good point. If you own a PS3 and want good games, you want it to sell well so Sony can score some good exclusives. If you don't own one, you want poor sales so the good games come to YOUR console.

Well that and this thread is about whether or not PS3 is a bust or not. So... posting a link to the video of the game was implying that it would sell consoles (at least that's how I took it), so I responded that I didn't think it would.

It's almost as frequent as someone posting about how little time they have for gaming.

Here is my take, I have always been A sony fan since the original playstation, and I am still enjoying the many great games available for PS2. I plan on upgrading when there is a better selection of games and I have an HDTV to play the PS3. I will get one it just going to be another year or two down the road.

Actually, that's my situation, thanks for summerizing it up! I used it primarily for my PS2 games and BR. If there are new cool PS3 games, great! If not, who cares... If more PS3s are sold, great! If not, who cares... Of course, as a PS3 and Wii owner, i do want both console to do good (who doesn't?)

BUT i'm just saying... if they don't, it won't affect my PS3 usage (not the Wii though, the Wii better do good, b/c not that many impressive GC games and i can't use the Wii for something else that interest me).
