Games with excellent AI opponents

Please recommend some games with excellent human-like AI opponents to play against. I'm looking for games with AI opponents that are so "good" (read: believable) that they're often singled out for praise in reviews.

I'm aware of:
  • Unreal Tournament series
  • Virtual Fighter 4 and 5
  • Galactic Civilizations

F.E.A.R. has garnered a shit-ton of praise. Unfortunately the level design has not.

F.E.A.R has pretty good AI.

I have seen the enemies use cover, call for back up and they have flanked me. They aslo seem to notice if I was into a room and bump someting that makes noise, and they will also spot you if you forget to turn of your headlight when walking into a room.

eh, I thought it was along the same lines as Metal Gear Solid : Portable Ops

I thought the A.I. was better in that, actually

A second vote for both Unreal Tournament and Farcry.

I also think that Half Life 1 and 2 and also Half Life: Source all have excellent AI.

Console wise i actually think that Timesplitters 2 on the Gamecube had pretty decent AI. Its been a while since i played it though, so maybe my memories are not great.

Yep Great AI, but shitty, repetitive and boring levels. Still a great game though.

Maybe this is rose-colored glasses, but I remember the Marines back in the expansion for the first Half-Life were pretty formidable. Taking cover, flanking and what not.

I always thought the Elites in Halo had good AI as well. Had some tense battles with those guys.

Glad we're mentioning the original HL. I believe the one fault with the sequel was the A.I. was a BIG disappointment.

Virtual Pro-Wrestling 2 for Nintendo 64. This is a japanese import and the precursor to WWF No Mercy, but the AI makes it the best wrestling game ever.
