Do old school systems play ok on LCD TV's?
 

I plan on getting the Sony 46" Wega LCD in a few months, and I also plan on picking up a few old school systems: Genesis, SMS, NES, and SNES.

So, as the title states...do they play ok? I wasn't sure if I should pick up a small and cheap tv to go with and play my games on that.

By ok, I mean no chance of burn in, will it just have "black bars" around the game screen (similar to the Capcom Collections for those who have played it on PS2 ~ I'm ok w/it I'm just asking), etc.

Any concerns with a LCD TV and old school games?

If you are planning on playing any light gun based games...I would keep the old analog tv around.

Old light guns don't like new TVs very much.

I'd only say that they're likely to look pretty shit compared to a normal tv, particularly since you'll have to use composite to connect. Personally, I'd just use emulators on a pc, and then hook it up with vga (pretty much what I sometimes do with my laptop). It will look better, and you can then apply scalers or filters to your taste.

They look awful, and many games are flat-out unplayable. It gets worse the further back you go. If you are going to spend any amount of time playing SD games, it's damn near required to have an SDTV to do so, IMO.

I would recommend that you use an emulator where you can upscale the resolution. That's what I did with Nesticle on my plasma, and it looked pretty decent.

My thoughts exactly... i can't play House of the Dead (DreamCast) on my DLP. I got the perfect save for the game too (downloaded from the net using the DreamCast via Juno, it was pretty cool at the times)

You may want to look up more info on the gun games if you are using them. I have a 65" DLP that doesn't have any problems with them. Obviously you will see the lack of resolution on the output from the console, that's a given.

To answer your question; they will play fine, you will notice that they are old.

More importantly, though, I have read many times that LCD is prone to burn-in on games/dvd menus if left on. You might wanna google "LCD screen burn" on that one.

LCDs do not burn-in. They don't work that way.

...and plasmas have largely overcome the issue as well.

You're probably thinking of color tube or plasma. LCDs don't get burn in.

Thanks guys. I'm not familar at all with emulators so I'll have to check those out.

I may just hook up the PS2 to the LCD and put my older systems on the Sony Trinitron in my bedroom or get a small $200-300 TV for the tv room.

I'd rather have the old systems in the tv room though since those are the games I prefer and I'll be through the PS2 catalog of games I want to play pretty soon and will sell it and I have no interest in getting a next-gen system yet.

I have no interest in gun games. I like the old school 2D platforming games.
