PSP dropped in price by $50 yesterday, Nintendo is expected to respond by selling more DS's.

A better move for MS would be to enable saving to an external HDD for the 360, and add a HD drive with HDMI for a minimal price increase, say, about the price of the HD DVD add on drive.
That would be a kick in the nuts to Sony. Not that I'm a fanboy of one system over the other, but the ability to copy to and from an external drive is IMO the only thing going for the PS3 that MS need to catch up with. |

I believe the extra $80 is to get the console in black. I thought once the white version shows up with the 120gig HD and HDMI, it'll be priced at $399.

I still don't know how much impact PS3 has on blu ray media sales. Anyone remember the UMD format? It was questionable at first but then started selling like hotcakes....for a few months then took an abysmal turn for the worse and studios have already pulled out of this format. Now there is much more at stake here for blu ray and hddvd but still...early sales are just that, early sales. Definately not an indicator for a clear winner.

Exactly. Once gamers have other things to buy for their system, ahem games, I suspect a dip in sales.
A friend of mine stated as much. He bought it for gaming and is only buying movies because there are no games and said that will stop once games start arriving. I doubt he is the only one buying "comfort food"(BR movies) to justify the purchase. |

UMDs sold well during the first part of the PSP's life because there were few games out for it and people wanted SOMETHING to play on it, the response was an overwhelmeing amount of releases, resulting in a glut in the market, stagnant UMD sales (for them to have been priced more than dvds is crazy) and loss of support for the format, releases for the format are few and far between now. I think Blu Ray will fare better than that though |

Pixy, you'll have to excuse but I'm a little dense. Do you mean you need another HDTV because you can't have your Wii and 360 hooked up at the same time or that another HDTV is your next big purchase? I really wish the Premium would have dropped to $300 as I would have snatched one up right away. It's not even that I can't afford the $400, and I think the 360 is worth that, but something deep inside is making it hard for me to shell out the money. $300 seems to be the sweet spot...which is comical because I remember thinking the PS2 was insane to ask that much when it first came out. What a difference a few years makes, eh? No bid deal though because the longer I wait, the more games come down in price, which is fine by me. |

Another little hint of a price drop. Looks like it is happening sooner then I thought. Maybe when MS drops the price of the Elite to $400?

Chubachi was originally interviewed by British newspaper The Financial Times, in which he stated, "We are re-examining our [PS3] budgeting process in terms of pricing and volume. Sales assumptions change and the market is competitive. We are in the midst of revisiting our strategy for the PS3." Despite the relatively unambiguous nature of his comments, Sony has moved quickly to refute the story, with spokeswoman Mami Imada saying in a statement that, “PS3 prices and shipment plans for the future should be determined by market trends and competition. Sony currently doesn't have any specific plan to cut the PlayStation 3's price”. The high price of the PlayStation 3 console has been widely blamed as the primary reason for a perceived lax demand for the hardware. However, the current high cost of manufacturing the console has previously been seen as a serious obstacle to an early price cut by Sony. Elsewhere, Sony has recently been indicating that its global game group operations may see more 'streamlining measures' such as those recently proposed by SCEE which threatened to cut nearly 10 percent of its workforce. The denial is smart. You don't want people to know that there may be a price cut in a couple months. Then you certainly will see sales drop.

Well, if Blu-Ray is the big crippling factor in its high cost it seems possible. Aren't $300 stand alone players already planned before the year is out? That seems like a steep difference from the $1000 initial players.
