Trifecta complete: PS3 RANT

I decided to grab a 60GB PS3 tonight (local Target had 12 of them), mainly because I want to Netflix some BluRay discs. My rant is...How in the Hell do they justify RCA cables with the premium PS3?? Are you friggin' kidding me? I didn't check it out before I left the store because I assumed it came with component at least. Looks like I'll be heading to BB tomorrow for some cables.

I was a little upset by that too. The good news is that if you already have PS2 component cables, you can just use those. And, they didn't make it so that you need some kind of proprietary HDMI cable, you can use any one you want.

I thought I read here somewhere that the reason Sony ships the PS3 with composite cables is because Blu-Ray looks best with them. ;)

seriously though, are you planning on getting component cables or an HDMI?

Think of it as a way of passing the savings on to you. They could of charged you an extra $10 but didnt.

You're welcome.

I believe it may also be related to the sheer number of older tv still out there. Why include an hdmi cable if the persons set cannot support it?

You know what happens when you assume, don't you? Of course you do.

I mean, this has been an hotly discussed issue for at least the past 3 or 4 months - at least since it became public knowledge before launch. As much as I do agree that it sucks, it's not like this should really come as a surprise to anyone who has done at least a little research before buying a PS3.

Welcome to the launch discussion ;)

www.monoprice.com for HDMI cables. They are cheap, and you should get them within a few days.

 Don't buy cables at Best Buy ever, waste of money. Save yourself some cash and buy from monoprice.

I found an HDMI cable at Big Lots for $12. I bought it to see how it looked, and it looks fine to me.

I understand, and totally agree, but I wasn't really following the launch discussions about the PS3 as I didn't really have any interest until I saw the BluRay lineup (recently). Sure ZI should have checked it out first, but I was at least expecting an HD pack like the 360 has.

RichC2 01-30-07 03:12 PM

I agree, it should have come with a 360-style hybrid composite/component cable.

Noonan 01-30-07 03:29 PM

The fact that it's a BD player is the only reason I feel it should come with either component or hdmi. Composite is still by far the standard for most people out there so if it were a DVD based system that would have been fine.

fujishig 01-31-07 05:59 PM

That's actually an interesting question... how many people who actually spent the coin for a PS3 are using it on composite-only tvs?

bunkaroo 01-31-07 06:16 PM

If you think that's bad, the BDP-S1, which costs even more than the PS3, also comes with only composite cables. Thankfully I had already had component cables to use with it.

At least Toshiba threw and HDMI cable in with my HD-A1.
