PC Game recommendations?
 

Just finished FEAR on my new computer. I really liked it. Now I'm trying to decide what to pick up next.

I've been considering getting Doom 3. I liked the demo, and was going to get it first before I tried FEAR and got it instead.

I prefer games with some "reality" to them. For instance, real buildings and soldiers in FEAR, versus the Mars base and its seemingly random collection of rooms and corridors, and zombies/monsters/demons in Doom.

I also tend to prefer games where you play solo, rather than have to command or work with a team. I liked SWAT 3, but often would play individual missions solo and abandon my squad. I tried the SWAT 4 demo, but just don't like it.

I'm also not a fan of puzzles or where it's not clear what to do. I enjoyed Half Life, but only finished it when I played it on my Dreamcast. I hear Half Life 2 is stunning, but I hate, hate, hate puzzles.

So, with all those conditions, any suggestions on what to pick up next? Is the FEAR expansion pack worth it? I think I might still like Doom 3.

And despite my aversion to team-type games, I took a look at Call of Duty and think it might be interesting.

I need to get something. Gotta put that graphics card to use!

About 50 views, and no one can offer any suggestions? I'm sure many of you guys play computer games.

Well, you pretty much wipeout a good majority of FPS games with your list of dislikes!!

There isn't much out there these days that doesn't have either some team type play or a futurisitic, unreal (no pun intended!) setting or have some puzzles.

Call of Duty series is very good. Not really team based, but you do get an occasional assist from your PC controlled counterparts. Really gives you the feeling of being in epic battles (especially 2).

Maybe check out No One Lives Forever 2, it won't push your graphics card in the least, is a really fun shooter based in the real world.

I really don't think Doom3 would be a good choice since it involves puzzles (easy), random monsters, repetetive corridors etc..pretty much everything you say you do not like.

Another vote for The Call of Duty series

Yeah, Call of Duty is a blast.

Far Cry might be something you'd like, as well, if you haven't already tried it.

I read over a Far Cry review at IGN, but I'm still not sure if I have an idea what this game is about. Is it basically a FPS?

Two concerns - How big of an issue is the save system, and is it easy to get "lost," as in not knowing where to go? I hate running in circles.

Otherwise, it looks like one to consider. Sounds like it's graphically impressive, and I'm guessing my hardware will handle it well.

It's a FPS, the main difference is there is no set path (for most levels). You get a location of where you need to go, and you pick the route to get there. The save system can be frustrating, I am a saving fiend in most PC games because you can save anywhere, but in Far Cry it is all checkpoints. Sometimes they are a little too far apart, but overall I don't think it is too much of an issue. If I remember right you always had something on the map showing you the next place to get to, I don't think I got lost very often.

The graphics are still great, but your hardware will handle them no problem.

Get Rainbow Six: Las Vegas. The team aspect is minimal and very simple to control.

And the game is an absolute blast to play through, it's thrilling like few FPS games are these days. Also, I'd recommend Condemned if you can find it cheap.

Half-Life 2 is not very puzzle oriented, and it's pretty obvious on what you're going to be doing except in a few small spots. And is also a very fun game.

The Call of Duty games are a good deal of fun, but I never manage to finish their single player campaigns (always get distracted...)

I know how you feel with puzzles. I dont like many games like that either but Half Life 2 is awesome, you never feel lost and you always know what to do.
