xbox live gold membership: can be activated on regular xbox?

I got a friend of mine for christmas a xbox live gold 12 month membership set (the one with the card, the headset for the 360, 2 xbl games and $20 off coupon) because it was cheaper than just the card. However he is having issues activating it. He called MS and they said xbl for the 360 cannot to be activated on a regular xbox. I thought xbl was xbl regardless?
Before I try to return this - is it possible that I can activate the xbl code on my 360 and he can recover the gamertag to his xbox afterwards?
Thanks.

I had a 2-month FREE trial card that I activated in November.

When I got my 360 in December, I did the Recover Gamertag and my remaining trial period converts to GOLD membership for the 360.

Now when I use my old Xbox, with the Gamertag info still on the hard drive, the account still works without using Account Recovery.

*The 2 month trial I used was the original XBL.

Possible Solution:

1. Have your friend get a 2 month FREE trial card and activate that on his Xbox. It could probably be a 3 month card as well. *original XBL

2. On your 360, use Recover Gamertag and add the 12 months GOLD.

3. The 12 months, along with the 2 months "FREE", should be on his Xbox too.

Where do you get the 2 month free trial cards from?

Try asking on the board. Someone could have an extra one they're not using. I tried that but then eventually bought one off eBay. I personally wouldn't spend more then $10 for one. Look for "FREE" shipping sellers who will e-mail you the code.

I bought one on eBay back in September. Since I have PayPal, I was able to pay quick and the seller sent the code by e-mail in just a few hours. It supposedly didn't have an expiration date. I guess that was true since I only activated it in November. That was 2 months after I bought it.
