Super Mario Bros. Tricks and those 100+ 1Ups

I am an old school gamer (anyone remember Adventure?) and I grow up on Super Mario Bros. I am sure many others did also. Back in the day before the net we all learned tricks on the game to share with people at school. I can get Mario to climb up walls, slide on one foot, have different music at the end at the flag poll, jump over the poll and a few others. Do you have any tricks?
However there are two tricks I can't do on the Mario I downloaded off Wii.
1>I can't get the free 1ups on World 3-1. At the end you kill the shell guy and jump on him for free 1ups. Its like Mario is stunk jumping on him. I believe I am doing it right. Did they take this out?
2>At the end of 1-2 you could jump in to the wall and find a hidden world marks -1. A water world. It was a never ending world that repeated with shorter time each time. However I can't get this to work anymore either.

Did they remove these tricks?

I'm an old school Mario player but I haven't tried the VC version, so I can't verify this. I'm guessing that's why you're not getting many responses.

I've done the minus world and the "unlimited" 1-ups. However, the 1-ups were more difficult than I remember. On the original NES, I never had trouble with the shell bouncing back at me and killing me, but it happens often on the VC version. However, once I got Mario to bounce on the shell a couple times, I had no problem doing it.

you can also do the 1up trick at the end of 7-1 with one of the hard shell beetles.

errr... it's fun at the time, but not anymore... play something else

i don't get the negative world, it never ends! so what's the point? yeah, it was cool to see Mario squeezing and sliding over the blocks and unlocking the secret level (i remembered my brother's jaw-drop when i proved it to him).

Speaking of the old secrets... What about SF2? Guile's instant dead move or something...

I got Splinter Cell: Double Agent for Christmas and have not even touched it yet because I've been busy with old Nintendo games. I'm hooked on Mario. I went all the way through Super Mario 3 without warping a couple weeks ago, and now I'm hooked on Super Mario 64.

Its funny how much you remember about the games after all these years.

Being able to use my XBOX controller on the PC really helps too, since I'm already used to it.
