The Wii gets a big thumbs up for all its backwards compatibility. I couldn't retire my Cube though due to the loss of the GBA player. I'm currently playing Super Robot Taisen on my Cube and that is something unfortunately lost with the Wii. However, when you look at everything Nintendo did cram into the Wii that is an ultra minor issue.

As much as they did for hardware compatibility from the cube is nice though... (controllers, etc) |

Since the MS issue is so spotty, I've started picking up the GC version of multiple console releases to play on my wii(just picked up both of the PoP sequels). I was also thinking along the lines of dtcarson. Since the Wii isn't lightyears ahead of the GC I am more likely to play older GC games. Usually I don't go back a gen once I've moved forward. I think the Wii will be the console to keep as well when moving forward. With all the VC titles and GC compatability it is a no brainer. I've also picked up collections on the GC like Mega Man and Mega Man X collections. Midway's collections are also on my shelf. The Wii is the Ultimate Retro machine. |

I commented on this myself on another board.
No screwing around with controller incompatibilities. No lockout of non-next-gen/authorized controllers (screw you, Microsoft, for locking out my Street Fighter Anniversary stick!). Wii has the memory card ports, the GC controller ports, etc...and the games are 100% compatible AFAIK. Yay Nintendo! |
The backwards compatiblity on nearly everything from the Gamecube is seriously undervalued. It's nice to completely transfer your entire library to your Wii including all attachments and games that otherwise would have been stored in away in the closet.
Everything up to stuff like Pac-Man Vs. (which didn't receive as much fanfare as it could have) with it's 4 Gameboy Adances that hooked into the Cube, Donkey Konga and it's bongos, and the rest of the stuff I bought through the years. Plus I was then also able to pass down the 'Cube to my little brother and not having to worry about needing it back at one point or another just to play a game. |
