PS3 in good supply, Wii units sold out across US
Matt Martin 11:54 17/01/2007
Sony disputes PS3 demand slowing, points to successful supply chain
Consumers looking to buy a PlayStation 3 in the US have multiple outlets to choose from, as over 50 per cent of all stores surveyed have units in stock.
Compared to the Nintendo Wii, which is in short supply in all regions across the globe, the PS3 is readily available in specialist and electrical retailers across North America, where Sony recently announced it had shipped a total of one million units.
"Our channel checks yesterday of 52 retail stores, from boutiques to big-box retailers, showed that 28 of the 52 stores had PS3 consoles in stock, while none had Wii consoles in stock," said PJ McNealy of American Technology Research.
While some have suggested the amount of stock available may be indication of slowing demand, Sony's David Karraker disputes the idea, instead pointing out that the company is doing such a good job of supplying retailers with available units.
"It isn't because demand has weakend, it is because we have kept the supply pipeline moving," Karraker told Reuters.
New hardware traditionally suffers from short supply at retail, as the demand from early-adopting consumers is fulfilled.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 came under increased pressure from retail following its launch in 2005, with supplies limited through the first quarter of 2006.
Despite the amount of PS3 units on store shelves, PJ McNealy pointed out that high levels of stock didn't not neccesarily indicate slow demand.

Speedy's confirmed that Target, Best Buy, AND Circuit City are all advertising Wiis for this Sunday. Get up bright and early...my personal suggestion would be 4AM.
Also, nobody's going to sell out BY the 21st. They're advertising them FOR the 21st, which means they have to be in stock on the 21st, at least when the store opens.

I'm not positive of it, but I think I may have seen a Wii in stock in Danville, Virginia at their EB Games in the mall. I have decided against buying until the killer software for me comes out (which would likely be Mario Kart), so I didn't check too carefully. What I know is that it was on the floor and that my foot brushed the box -- it wasn't empty. Of course, it could be that they have thrown a bag of sand in the box or something.

Ah. Yes. Right. Well. I guess I'll be out there bright and early on Sunday, then.
Thanks for the info.

Well according to the pictures of the PS3 inventory they sold 42 PS3 units in 5 days. For the price that doesn't seem bad at all.
And as for the pictures of the stuff up for the Sunday allotment of Wiis. Is there even a snowball's chance in hell that any of those accessories will be there by the time Sunday rolls around. lol I think not. So we'll be seeing a bunch more of the "I finally got a wii but they didn't have any remotes or nunchucks available."

In the past two weeks they've recieved a few shipments and they aren't selling extremely fast due to it being a very rural Wal-Mart. My friend got his there. As of yesterday, they still had one.

LOL!! I don't know Pinata your guess is as good as mine. I know my walmart has had PS3s kicking around for the better part of two weeks now and they weren't getting any attention so they moved em back to the layaway area and are only keeping one in the case. I think the strategy is to make people think "holy crap they only have one left, I'd better buy it!!" I'll have to ask someone how that's working out for them.

But on the "half full" side, if they sold that many, kudos to Sony.

The second pile is akin to what I have seen in BBs before -- the last time I was there, my nearest BB had two piles of almost exactly that size on either side of their PS3 demo. You can't say how many were sold or for that matter how many they may have gotten in on a truck, but I'd agree the primary reason for the change was likely to allow for better traffic flow. You rarely see such a wall of products in stores unless the wall has been placed there to keep order -- I know I've seen Wal-Marts use 2 drawer filing cabinets for just that purpose to create a special post Christmas returns department area before.

Here in So Cal in the Sherman Oaks area...the "Ahhhhs" store on Ventura a few miles East of Sepulveda has a guy with a sign saying Wii's are in stock. I was on my way to work and I didn't have time to go in. I was tempted though...

You live in Torrance but work in Sherman Oaks?
