Okay, I broke down and bought a PS3, this time for me. I hooked it up with composite cables (hey that's all I have for now, haha) but was wondering if I should go component. I don't have an HDTV, but I'll get a good picture with component, right? Really noticeable from composite or not that big a difference?
If I do go the componet route, I'd have to choose between the 360 and the PS3. Right now the 360 is hooked up via component and optical. Would it be worth it to switch the PS3 to component and the 360 to say S-Video (which I assume is better then composite) or leave the component with the 360 and have the PS3 go S-video? Sorry if this is all confusing, it's late and I am tired :D |

Sorry if this is all confusing, it's late and I am tired :D I was in the same boat as far as lack of component inputs, which is a big reason why I skipped the 360 altogether. I know I've seen a lot of complaints about how the PS3 looks on SDTV through composite cable, but I haven't really checked into how the 360 looks. I think the PS3 might need the component cables more than the 360 does. Your best bet really is to find a cheap set for your PS3, maybe try to find something that is labelled for the PS2, it will work fine, and switch between it and the 360. If there isn't a big difference, return the PS3 component cable and get the s-video. |
So, does anyone have their PS3 hooked up via HDMI and have OPTICAL out on their TV? I heard it MIGHT not work with the PS3...if so, I may be screwed.

Thanks...maybe different TV's handle it differently, or the person on CAG did not hook it up right....
I hope it works that way, because I don't want to run other optical from the PS3 to my receiver, because then I would need a optical splitter...which would kinda suck. |
I have to do that ,my TV Only passed 2 channel PCM to the receiver unless the feed is coming from the Tv itself. dammit.

I was hoping my TV would pass a 5.1 signal, but it looks like it won't |
Would a component switch work for me?
|
I'm going to try Radioshack today - otherwise Ebay for a splitter. Stupid receiver only having 1 coax and one optical :(

Another topic...PS3 = Horizontal or Vertical? Just curious, I know the 360 has some issues with disc scratching when vertical...anyone have issues with the PS3? |

Surprise, surprise. I called Gamerush last night to see if they would be following the call list for the PS3 since I was #1 on it, and they said yes. Today I get a call saying that they got a shipment in, and I could pick it up if I still wanted it. Luckily it is the 20GB one, which is what I wanted. I didn't really plan on buying one so soon, but I have some trade-in left over, so why not?
Is there anything worth picking up besides Resistance, if I already have a Xbox360? |

As does mine.. |
My GameRush also got them....I got the 60GB version. I had a choice of either, but the 60 was fine for me, since I have $400+ in credit.

Just thought I would throw this out there. I plan on getting this spitter for component, it also has TOSLINK audio switching from what I understand.

if you guys need a somewhat affordable component/optical switch this may help you out:
silver: http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/...=64951.4244417 black: http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/...=64951.4244418 EDIT: the link to the black version does nork for some reason. 7 input to 1 with electronic switching 4 optical inputs 3 Ethernet Ports 6 S-Video inputs 6 Component Video 6 Stereo Audio inputs S-Video, Optical, Ethernet, Component, Composite outs and RF Converter Signal Regulator Technology automatically compensates for potential signal loss. Programmable input channel display Remote Controller Solid Metal and Stylish Design to compliment your existing AV equipment. I have one of these and it works just fine for my needs. you just need to know this - whatever connection you use in you must use out. it does not upconvert. right now I have 2 dtivos(via s-vid + optical), Motorola HD cable box(component + optical), xbox360(component + analog) and my PS3(component + optical) connected to it. yeah, yeah, I know, no optical for 360 but I'm fine with that for now. |

FYI - the splitter works like a hot damn - and for only 8.00 it's in the right price range :)
|
Glad that splitter works...I'll have to see if just running a HDMI cable from my PS3 to TV, then Optical from TV to Receiver will work. If not, I have the optical switch as a backup plan (I figure I'll need it eventually if setup one works).
Now, I have a nice new PS3 in a box....I opened it carefully...looked inside...still got Talledegha Nights....yeah. I wasn't sure if it was in the box, since they don't mention it anywhere. I didn't even take anything else out yet as I need a HDMI cable first (don't want to run composite just to unhook) (Kinda odd how this whole page is basically HOW to hook up a PS3...Sony dropped the ball by ONLY giving Composite....you would think they would throw in at LEAST component, and HDMI for the 60GB model) |
