The more I think about this the more I think it is a BS argument. The Xbox came out a year after the PS2. Halo looked better than anything on it out of the gates(same with Gotham, DOA & Munch's Odyssey) . No catch up time needed. People put the then PS2 titles up against it, so why the slack now for Sony? They have a more powerful system so the initial games should look almost as good as what is out now on the 360, not barely as good as year old launch titles. 75% PS3 titles are ports anyway, those should only need a fraction of the development time to add some sheen and bells & whistles.

Hell you could make the same case for the GC. Some of those launch titles, Waverace & Rogue Squadron looked better than current PS2 titles. People weren't comparing launch lineups to launch lineups last gen. It was the case of this is newer and had more time to be better so it should look better from day one.

So the more I see that flimsy argument the more it sounds like a bullshit double standard if I've ever seen one. I think it has to do more with Sony shoveling out quantity over quality(thier story from day one of the PS1). They've been the first out of the gates the last two gens so it didn't matter. It is different this time around, so new rules are written. I think this whole comparing new titles to year old releases is new to this gen.

Really? I forgot Microsoft had a first rate launch line-up right out of the gate. I must have completely missed that.

But yah, Sony should have come up with something better than Resistance Fall of Man at launch, I mean c'mon, the game doesn't even hold a candle to the 360's super awesome launch title, Perfect Dark Zero.

I guess Sony should just continue shoveling out quantities of crap because that's why they've been so successful. Fuck quality.

Brent L 11-16-06 11:45 PM

The Walmart in Central, SC (right up the road from Clemson) only got six, count em SIX PS3 systems in stock, and then six more "rain checks". To be a college town that shocked me. I was sold that about 40-50 people in line there wouldn't be able to get one after camping out for hours and for some, days.

Yes Perfect Dark Zero was a huge disappointment, but it wasn't the only game that launched with the 360. Call of Duty 2 and Condemned both launched with the system, and both of them were excellent.

Well there's the problem, her daughters father isn't even married to her daughters mother! -ohbfrank-

I never said it wasn't the only game that launched with the 360. The argument here seems to be the lack of quality games at launch for the PS3 and hardly any exclusives and this is all because Sony has the attitude of quantity over quality. I don't buy that crap. If I recall, the 360 had only a couple exclusives(Perfect Dark & Kameo) and it's launch line-up was pretty sub-par with the exception of CoD2, Kameo and Condemned. The PS3 is launching with Resistance FoM, Ridge Racer, CoD3, Madden, and Marvel UA.....all quality games, getting great reviews. I just don't get why everyone is bitching about Sony's launch line-up when it's just as good as the 360's from a year ago.

Project Gotham Racing 3 was an exclusive launch title and it certainly was not sub-par.

Supermallet 11-17-06 12:37 AM

Wait. We're holding up Riiiiiiidge Racer as one of the quality PS3 launch games?

Ridge Racer

IGN - 8.2
1UP - 8.0

I guess anything lower than 90% isn't quality? -rolleyes-

Supermallet 11-17-06 12:57 AM

This isn't a Sony thing, I hated Ridge Racer on the 360 as well. It's like the "interactive menus" being touted as a special feature on old DVDs. Yeah, it's there, but who cares?

maxfisher 11-17-06 01:02 AM

I wonder what percentage of people camping out tonight will actually get PS3's. I was out of town most of the week and got back around 6 pm tonight. I called about 30 Walmarts & Circuit City's and every store told me that they had over 2x as many people waiting in line as they had systems arriving. I stopped at my closest Walmart and they had the chair system going, with 6 of the chairs taken up by a family that looked like it was planning on purchasing the systems with foodstamps. Obviously a lot of people are only buying the system out of the promise of profits. I'm guessing the local Best Buy's will be even worse, as I drove past two on my way into town and each looked like it had at least 75 - 100 people waiting out front. I'm very curious to see how this clusterfuck of a launch shakes out for Sony. I have a feeling it's the beginning of the end of their role as the industry leader. Ideally, I'd really like to see them drop to about a 25% - 30% market share, with Microsoft and Nintendo evenly splitting the remainder.

Arpeggi 11-17-06 01:15 AM

"Sony is gonna lose market share this generation!" is the new "Nintendo is going the way of Sega".

I got a rain check after waiting for 23 hours. But i'm the first rain check, and they expect more by december 5th. Can't write anymore too tired but tons of stories. Lots of fun though, very good and calm crowd.

Just got back from the NYC launch party a little while ago. What a night! Ludacris, Charlie Murphy, Kaz Hirai and my very own PS3, all in the span of 5 hours or so. I'll do a write-up tomorrow if anyone cares.

Hey L&O/Setzer: any updates on your situation?

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Guys. Back up about a dozen posts. Setzer misread my post and it is snowballing from there. I did not intend for a console bashing debate.

I was talking about the ORIGINAL XBOX lineup versus the PS2. NOT PS3 vs. 360. When the ORIGINAL XBOX launched, the lineup(Halo 1, Gotham 1, DOA, & Munch's Odyssey) was compared to the then current PS2 lineup, not the PS2 launch titles from a year prior. Out of the gates, with a year behind, MS somehow still put out titles that were as strong as if not stronger than the current PS2 releases of 2001. No one compared launch titles to launch titles LAST GEN. Sony's launch lineup was all but forgotten by the time the ORIGINAL XBOX was released. Is it wrong to expect Sony with the more powerful PS3 and an extra year of dev time to put out something more impressive than current 360 titles? I don't think so.

So there seems to be a double standard for Sony, when in fact we SHOULD be comparing Resistance to Gears, and the rest of the lineup to titles like Saints Row, Dead Rising, Rainbow 6, etc. Developers have had the PS3 specs for over a year. It isn't like Sony just gave out the system specs back in September. I'm just calling BS on comparing launch titles to launch titles when that wasn't the case when the PS2 had the year head start over the ORIGINAL XBOX and Gamecube.

Surely that isn't hard to understand.

I found a PS3 display at Target but it took so long for the game to load I became distracted and wandered away.

Actually, it's about 78% over at Gamerankings at the moment out of four reviews. I think it will be on par with RR6, which was generally pushed aside by 360 owners for racing games like PGR3, TDU, Burnout, etc.

That's a moot point. New games get compared against what's out right now. Not what's out a year ago. Perfect Dark Zero might get compared against other budget ($20) games like Halo 2, God of War, etc.

Sony, like Microsoft in 2005, just needs to worry about manufacturing enough PS3s and getting their Blu-Ray attach rate up so they can get ahead in the HD DVD/BD wars (which they are currently losing).

Microsoft needs to get sales to start increasing. The 360 is selling about 200,000 to 250,000 a month. The PS2 at the same time was selling 300,000 to 500,000 units per month. The PS2 also had a blockbuster first holiday year, selling 3 million in November and December of 2001 (more than the Xbox and Gamecube combined). I'm not seeing the 360 doing that.

But time will tell. Like Jay-Z said, "Men lie. Women lie. Numbers don't". We'll see.
