I'm thinking about picking this up for my friends birthday next week. Is there much of a difference between the regular version and the collector's edition version other than the $10 price difference?

Lost Planet Finds New Maps
Extra content coming in March.
Lost Planet, one of the top 10 most played Xbox Live games since its release in January, is set to expand. Capcom announced plans to release three map packs for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The first map pack will be made available March 9 for 400 Microsoft Points (US$5).
The March map pack includes two new multiplayer arenas: Radar Field, described as a "close quarters facility" and Island 902, which features a series of islands connected by bridges.
"We're committed to bringing new content to the thriving community of Lost Planet fans," said Charles Bellfield, Capcom's vice president of marketing. "The development team is steadily working on additional environments to provide players with new ways to enjoy the intense Lost Planet brand of action."
In the coming months, Capcom plans to release two more map packs along with the Battleground map, previously available only to gamers who purchased the Lost Planet Collector's Edition. The Battleground map will be made available for free. Pricing for the remaining map packs has not been decided.

cool. I may have to pony up and buy some points after resisting for so long. I love Lost Planet online. Nothing like having your ass handed to you by Level 90 Japanese kids.

Lost Planet Map Packs Detailed
Seven new maps to be unleashed.
For fans of Capcom's icy shooter, Lost Planet, more game is always a good thing - particularly when multiplayer maps are involved. Capcom plans to offer downloadable multiplayer map packs for Lost Planet. The first map pack will cost 400 Microsoft Points, with pricing on the following packs to be determined later.
The first pack is planned to be released via Xbox Live Marketplace on or about March 9 and contains two new multiplayer levels: "Radar Field", a close quarters facility which is under construction and has a giant radar that provides an excellent vantage point, and "Island 902", a sprawling Pacific-themed battlefield with several islands connected by bridges as well as vast underwater areas.
Additionally, "Battleground", a multiplayer map originally offered exclusively to those who purchased the Limited Edition of the game, will be made available for free to all Lost Planet players. The next two packs, as well as the free Battleground map will be made available in the coming months.

Lost Planet Fixed
March 2, 2007 - Capcom has released a plethora of updates to Lost Planet's online multiplayer. The update, originally expected around March 9, came a week early. The fixes should eliminate some of the recurring bugs players have been experiencing since Lost Planet's release in January.
Here are the major updates:
Country flag and connection strength icons added
Icon indicating who is speaking added
Names of dropped players now grayed out in post-match results
Points for a Fugitive killing a Hunter reduced by 75%
Games where network conditions are bad enough to cause severe lag are now prevented
Reload time no longer shortened by initiating a taunt (a popular exploit)
The update must be downloaded before gamers can play Lost Planet multiplayer. Five new maps for Lost Planet have not yet been released, but are expected soon.

Lost Planet Map Pack Arrives
Two new maps are now available on Xbox Live.
March 9, 2007 - Capcom's first attempt at making a fully featured online game, Lost Planet, was both a commercial and critical success. In a showing that they're serious about supporting their online ambitions, downloadable content was announced shortly after the games launch.
That announcement has come to fruition as the first multiplayer map pack for Lost Planet is now available to be downloaded through the Xbox Live Marketplace. For 400 Microsoft Points ($5 USD), you get two new maps which can only be played through Xbox Live. The two maps included in the pack are Radar Field and Island 902, offering both a taste of areas made for close quarters combat and expansive, long range duels.

Lost Planet Map Pack 2 Hands-on
We hop online with the latest downloadable maps.
April 9, 2007 - Capcom's first foray into the online shooter genre has not been done with tentative steps. Regular updates and fixes have come in a steady stream since the title launched in January and the result is an online community that is still going strong several months later. To keep the fans happy, Capcom has released a second map pack featuring two new maps, Trial Point and Hive Complex. Like the first set of maps, these guys will set you back 400 Microsoft Points ($5 USD). That's not exactly a cheap download, but then again, these maps clearly weren't just slapped together in the interest of making a quick buck.
Hive Complex is inspired by the fifth stage of the Lost Planet campaign mode, although the outdoor area on the cliff face is the focus. Set on a horseshoe-like cliff, Hive Complex's outdoor area is perfect for snipers and plasma guns. Waterfalls and bridges are the primary landmarks, but the cliff face isn't without its own features. Sprinkled across the land are bombed out buildings and platforms made of rock that will give players a good base to grapple around. There are several Vital Suits up for grabs, but unless you're a pro at their hover and boost maneuvers, getting around can be difficult. The uneven but open landscape and prevalent obstacles make the VSs a better target than you'd initially think. There are also a few turret guns that can be useful, but their inability to aim at the action that takes place on the lowest levels limits their capabilities.
As you might expect, Hive Complex has an extensive series of caves and tunnels behind the cliff face. Most of the action takes place outside, but these tunnels are a great asset in Post Grab and Fugitive Hunt modes. You can also make your way up the sides of the cliff face to the top for a bird's eye view of the map. All told, the amount of vertical movement possible in Hive Complex is quite impressive. Hive Complex isn't the most exciting map visually. The waterfalls and bridges look cool, but the mountainside landscape has a bit of a "been there done that" feel to it.
Trial Point is a bit of an anomaly. Unlike other Lost Planet maps, it isn't based on any environment found in the single player campaign. Instead, it puts combatants inside of an office building in the middle of a huge metropolis. That's right, if you look out of the windows, you can actually see the entire city surrounding the building. This may not make any sense in the world of Lost Planet, but it makes for some excellent close quarters combat that few other maps can provide and has a visual style that is unique in Lost Planet.
Trial Point isn't very different from most videogame office themed combat arenas. There is a network of hallways, a good number of air ducts to crawl through, and a few elevator shafts that can be used to quickly skip between levels. There's also a large warehouse type room with a few VS weapons, but we found that the majority of the action centered around the posts and the surrounding air ducts.
Playing online, you'll find that most gamers are opting for the initial weapon to be a shotgun and the modes are predominantly Team Elimination and Post Grab. These are the most obvious and best choices, so most of the games you'll hop into will be quite fun. Grabbing posts can be tricky at best thanks to the numerous ambush areas the air ducts provide. The tight combat areas create some nice choke points where strategy runs face first into a frantic firefight. The few games we played with rifles gave their own surprises as hallways became shooting galleries, but the action element felt removed as most players looked for a good nook to camp out in.
The new maps are fun, but the real question is whether they're worth the money or not. If you never got into the somewhat quirky online battle system, these two new maps likely won't do anything to convince you to give it another go. If you've been playing Lost Planet for several months and still enjoy the online fights, then the answer is yes. The new maps have a good overall design and they feel different enough from the older maps to make at least the environment feel fresh. It helps that Trial Point is one our personal favorites of all the maps we've seen thus far.

I'm thinking of getting this (or GRAW2) but I've read that this has about 11 or 12 missions. Is that a little short compared to Gears or RS:LV?

Finally, after almost a year of 360 ownership, I bought points and grabbed the 2 map packs. I like Pack 2 slightly better than mp 1, but both look amazing and are fun to play in. They're also different from the orignal maps in that there's no snow.

Three new maps to be included in download.
June 15, 2007 - Get your parkas out of the closet as Capcom announced today that the third multiplayer map pack for Lost Planet: Extreme Condition will be available for download via Xbox Live Marketplace on Thursday, June 21st. The pack will run a cool 400 Microsoft Points and include a total of three new maps.

LOL! Nice redraft...
I'm not one of the GoW whores, can't even remember the last time I played it.
I really haven't been playing that much lately, haven't played any games in almost 2 weeks.
Hell, I have a rental from Gamefly that I got 2 months ago that I haven't even played yet... time to cancel.

Thinking of picking up this game from Buy.com using Google Checkout - it would knock the price down to $29.99 with free shipping - seems like a good deal - thoughts?

Me: Decent price for a great game both single player and online so pick it up

The rest of the dvdtalk gamers: It's not as fun as Gears of War because you can move in too many directions and also because you can't chainsaw your enemies and curb stomp their heads so skip it.

You are correct and several games the price has dropped. Wonder why...hummm... could it be there's like twenty of so high profile games coming up next week to the end of the year. I could go and grab Dead Rising and Lost Planet but no-way now not with Bioshock, Halo 3, Mass Effect and so on. Thery're worried those games will be collecting dust when all these new ones hit and guess what...they're right.
