Best "action" FPS for Gamecube..?
 

Yeah, yeah.. I know.. Xbox.. but I'm getting rid of that thing. Anyway, I'm drowning in RPGs and I think I need something to take a breather with.. can someone recommend a good Doom or Quake style FPS for the Cube (or PS2 if there's just nothing on Cube.. but preferably Cube)? I'm just looking for something I can pick up on the cheap and just shoot a lot of things.

Geist can be found cheap and is decent.

Time Splitters 2 or 3 would probably be your best bet for a GC game. Both were excellent if you're looking for a straight forward FPS. Get either Metroid if you want something with a bit more adventure.

Metroid is the reason I own a Gamecube (or am actually playing games today). But yeah, that one is much more adventure based.. I'm looking for more "one vs. a thousand" action. I thought Geist was more an adventure style FPS as well? Hmm.. I'll look at Time Splitters for now.

You may also want to check out XIII. I know some people can't stand cell shaded graphics but it was a really fun game and had great multiplayer modes.

Another vote for both Metroid and Timesplitters 2 and 3.

Actually, how is the Far Cry series? I'd LOVE to do an FPS with the Wii controller but I thought Call of Duty (which is more squad/tactics, right?) was the only launch FPS and I just checked Wikipedia and saw Far Cry listed. Of course.. that'd be $50 as opposed to $10.. but.. Wii controller! It's just.. made for the genre.

Call of Duty has Squad/tactic aspects but is more a straight forward shooter than not.

I absolutely hated Far Cry. There was something about the way it controlled which made it unplayable for me. Although there are other people with you in COD it does not play like a tactical game like the Tom Clancy series but more like a straight FPS.

What about Serious Sam? That one sounds like exactly what I'm looking for.

Serious Sam on the PC/Xbox was good, fast, frantic fun (with some nice looking, massive levels). Haven't played the PS2/GC versions though.

To note: The PC and Xbox versions are the same, though the Xbox version lacks V-Sync (as most XB games do). The "Next Encounter" games on the PS2/GC are not direct ports and deliver severely degraded graphics, though should still be an entertaining run (I recall seeing it for like $4 at compusa, which wouldn't be a bad deal.)

IMO, Serious Sam is the PC/Console equal of an Arcade beat 'em up. The 'clear out an area and go' feel. The PC/Xbox version, at least, was oddly satisfying as such, all it was missing was a quarter slot.

Serious Sam is a lot of fun but it's not made to be taken seriously (no pun intended). If you want something with little to no story but has a lot of killing, this game is a good choice. You'll want to play it in surround sound if possible for the suicide bombers.

My friends and I lived on Goldeneye in college and had a great time with 007: Nightfire on my Cube. Especially the multiplayer with bots, but if you like Goldeneye at all it's a decent follow-up.

I actually had the most fun with Serious Sam when I entered cheats for life and weapons and put it on Serious Mode which is the hardest difficulty. There is absolutely no way to get anywhere in that mode without cheats and even then it's hard. Endless waves of enemies come from everywhere. It's a great stress reliever.

Yeah, I forgot about Serious Sam and XIII. I would definitely recommend both of those.

What is sad is that I've been playing Serious Sam I and II on Gametap recently and still forgot to recommend it.

There isn't a Far Cry for the Gamecube. It is only available for the PC, Xbox, and soon to be Wii.

The PC Far Cry is absolutely amazing and almost universally loved by FPS fans. It has amazing graphics that are still considered really good even today in the age of HD graphics. It also has a really smart AI with enemies that will actually use cover, try to dodge your fire, and flank you.

The Xbox Far Cry was an absolute disgrace. It had horrible controls, bad graphics, bad AI, and was literally half as long as the PC original. The AI was so bad, you could snipe someone in the head, and his friend standing two feet away wouldn't react at all.

Nothing much has been revealed about the Wii version of Far Cry, so I don't know if it will be more like the PC or the Xbox version. If you are looking for a Wii FPS, Red Steel looks to be a decent game. It also has first person sword fighting, so it isn't strictly a shooter.

I also recommend the Serious Sam games. They are intentionally designed to be like the old Doom and Duke Nukem games. You just go in and kill thousands and thousands of monsters. There is no plot. You are just there to kill monsters.

Time Splitters 2 is a ton of fun. From the single and multiplayer to all the unlockable content through the mini-games, I think that I played that game more than the next three GC games combined.
