Video Game Talk's 2006 Holiday Buying Guide

While the official Video Game Talk reviews are here, I thought it would be interesting to have a small unofficial buying guide for everyone that's going to be video game-related shopping this holiday season.

Basically, I envision a well-thought out bunch of recommendations from everyone who owns systems here and putting them together into a short summary based on everyone's views. Something similar to the Rank 'em as You Hear/See 'em threads elsewhere. However, I want it to concentrate on this holiday season, so no talk about anything from 2007 or anything not in stores anymore.

Basically, I'd like to get the following questions answered from each of you, as it pertains to you actually owning one of the current systems (NGC, Wii, Xbox, 360, PS2, PS3, GBA, NDS, PSP).

Which three new/upcoming games are you most looking forward to? (Games released fall of 2006 that are unreleased or unplayed by you)

Which three new games are you most enjoying? (Already released games from 2006. For example, Okami or Dead Rising)

Which five games would you recommend as essentials for a newcomer to this system? (Games from any period or year)

What three accessories (if any) do you see as essential for the enjoyment of this system? (For example, EyeToy, Xbox Live, Wavebird)

<hr>

I really want to stray from discussion on everyone else's opinions. Just give me yours and I'm going to tally everyone's democratically.

You can vote once for each system, so for example, you can give five game suggestions for the Wii and five for the 360.

Please post only once and edit your post if you need to add info

I hope this works.

All of my post will pertain to the 360 since it is the only system I currently own.

Which three new/upcoming games are you most looking forward to?

1. Gears of War
2. Rainbow Six: Vegas
3. F.E.A.R.

Which three new games are you most enjoying?

1. Oblivion
2. Dead Rising
3. Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter

Which five games would you recommend as essentials for a newcomer to this system?

1. Oblivion
2. Dead Rising
3. G.R.A.W.
4. Condemned: Criminal Origins
5. Call of Duty 2

I would also put Ninja Gaiden on that list, but it is an Xbox 1 game. Ninja Gaiden should be played by anyone who loves action games though. It runs well through the 360's backward compatibility and the graphics still hold up very well in this age of HD graphics.

What three accessories (if any) do you see as essential for the enjoyment of this system?

1. Not really an accessory, but I recommend using either an HDTV or if you can't afford that, at least use a PC monitor (via the VGA cable)
2. Xbox Live Silver (even if you never plan to game online, you can still download free demos and stuff). Xbox Live Gold is the pay subscription that lets you game online.
3. can't think of anything else (I'm not a big fan of accessories in case you can't tell)...

First I'll go with my XBOX 360 suggestions.

Which three new/upcoming games are you most looking forward to? (Games released fall of 2006 that are unreleased or unplayed by you)
1. Tony Hawk's Project 8
2. Everything else just came out... so no other ones really..

Which three new games are you most enjoying? (Already released games from 2006. For example, Okami or Dead Rising)
1. Dead Rising
2. Lego Star Wars 2
3. Marvel Ultimate Alliance

Which five games would you recommend as essentials for a newcomer to this system? (Games from any period or year)
(I'm limiting this to exclusives in a sense (at least things with what I see as an advantage), because for example: Oblivion is great, but its the same game on PC and not "essential" to the 360)
1. Dead Rising
2. Burnout Revenge
3. Saint's Row (If you like GTA)
4. Marvel Ultimate Alliance
5. Geometry Wars

What three accessories (if any) do you see as essential for the enjoyment of this system? (For example, EyeToy, Xbox Live, Wavebird)
1. Xbox Live (at the minimum, plug the thing into the internet and check out your free month of Gold)
2. Wireless Controllers
3. HDTV

Now, stuff for the Nintendo DS

Which three new/upcoming games are you most looking forward to? (Games released fall of 2006 that are unreleased or unplayed by you)
1. Final Fantasy III
2. Yoshi's Island
3. (save your money and pre-order/wait for Castlevania Portrait of Ruin )

Which three new games are you most enjoying? (Already released games from 2006. For example, Okami or Dead Rising)
1. New Super Mario Brothers
2. Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow (I'm counting this b/c it was OOP and they reprinted)
3. Clubhouse Games (great time waster)

Which five games would you recommend as essentials for a newcomer to this system? (Games from any period or year)
1. New Super Mario Brothers
2. Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
3. Advance Wars: Dual Strike
4. Mario Kart DS
5. Animal Crossing

What three accessories (if any) do you see as essential for the enjoyment of this system? (For example, EyeToy, Xbox Live, Wavebird)
1. DS Lite (does this count? - If you own a DS, you need a Lite)
2. Some sort of carrying case so you dont lose games or have to cart around the full size cases.
3.

I'm not too big on accessories, but the only one that immediately jumps to mind is maybe a battery charger for the 360 wireless controller batteries.

I'm just doing this for games I'm playing in general, not for a specific system.

Which three new/upcoming games are you most looking forward to? Gears of War, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

Which three new games are you most enjoying?
Okami, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Children of Mana

Which five games would you recommend as essentials for a newcomer to this system? Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (360 or PC), Okami (PS2), New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo DS), Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (Xbox 360), Children of Mana (Nintendo DS)

What three accessories (if any) do you see as essential for the enjoyment of this system? Essential? Well, none, really. But I do like the upcoming HD DVD add-on drive for the 360.
