It's Official: Microsoft Already Working on Xbox 3

Summary:
A Microsoft VP has confirmed that the company is already in the planning stages for a next-next-gen follow up to the Xbox 360.

The "Xbox 720" looms on the horizon

Saying that "You can't sit back on your laurels in this business," Microsoft EMEA (European, Middle East, and Africa) vice president Chris Lewis told Kikizo that the company is hard at work designing a new next-gen console.

Lewis is surprisingly direct about Microsoft's plans for a next-gen console. "The consumer won't let you [rest on your laurels], the developers certainly won't let us. So that's happening right now," he said.

"You'll see more [on a new Xbox] over time...certainly we're not talking about the next version yet," Lewis told Kikizo, "so give us a chance to catch a breath, will you?"
Sure this is just preliminary design work for the next-next-gen Xbox, but isn't it a little too soon for even that? The 360 hasn't even been out for a full year yet, and Microsoft has already started planning a new console? They better not start pumping out new consoles every couple years or that will piss off a lot of consumers.

Possible Re-design new version XBOX360 instead XBOX720. I surely don't like the current XBOX 360 & look forward for re-design version w/ upgrade.

This shouldnt be a suprise, technology never stops. All game consoles have been developed like this.

RocShemp 10-17-06 08:40 PM

Speaking of the redesign for the 360, when can we expect it? Or is it still a bit off to ask that question?

Anubis2005X 10-17-06 08:49 PM

I think this is common for most console companies. They get one console out the door and it's time to start getting ready for the next one. It takes a while to develop these things...

al_bundy 10-17-06 09:52 PM

console cycle is 5 years, not a big deal to start planning the next gen console at this stage. a lot of work is involved in making a console

Absolutely.

If Sony gets its wish(10 year console span) we are looking at a 2086 release. On the opposite side of the coin, with Microsoft's 4 year life span, the X-box 10 should be out around 2033.

I remember reading an article showcasing Bill Gates and the X-Box team a few years ago, and being surprised at how long they said there were working on the X360. There seems to be very little breathing room for companies getting one console out the door, before working on the next thing. Especially since the original X-Box didn't go through any re-designs that I'm aware of.

Exactly, well said. I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't in some stage of planning XBOX "4" as well.

If you were going to make a post based on these ridiculous longevity numbers, the least you could do is not go 0-for-2 on the math. :)

 One was wrong, sue me.

PS3 release: 2006 + 10 years = 2016
7 more systems until we get PS10 @10 yr cycle = 70 years
2016 + 70 = 2086

360 release: 2005 + 4 years = 2009
8 more systems until we get Xbox 10 @4 yr cycle = 32 years
2009 + 32 = 2041

Guys, you have to remember a couple of things when we're talking about life cycles:

Nintendo usually releases their consoles near the very end. They do it because they want a lot of good technology for cheap and waiting another year until producting keeps them nice and profitable.

The original Xbox came out very late. The previous gen started with the Dreamcast (Sega launches early). The PS2 was out a year later. That's when the Xbox should've been out. Not with the Gamecube.

The Xbox 360 came out "on time" five years after the last gen started. Nintendo, as usual, launched late. The thing is, this time Sony launched late. The PS3 originally was supposed to be out in 2005 but that became impossible when BD was tacked in.

Console life cycles are five years. It was five years between the SNES-N64-Gamecube-Wii. It was five years between PS1-PS2. The PS3 and the Xbox were anomalies.

mr.snowmizer 10-18-06 09:34 AM

10 years...
PS3: 2006
PS4: 2016
PS5: 2026
PS6: 2036
PS7: 2046
PS8: 2056
PS9: 2066
PS10: 2076

4 years...
Xbox 360: 2005
Xbox 3: 2009
Xbox 4: 2013
Xbox5: 2017
Xbox6: 2021
Xbox7: 2025
Xbox8: 2029
Xbox9: 2033
Xbox10: 2037

 Wow I did screw that up somehow.

At anyrate, there is one thing you can bank on. In 2076 with the PS10 you will still be using some iteration of the Dual Shock.

Nice save.

Just because the PS3 has a lifespan of 10 years doesn't mean the PS4 will be out 10 years after the PS3 release. They're saying the PS2 won't be dead after the PS3 hits. You should expect the PS4 in 6 years, 7 at the outside, I would think.

If Sony can't find a way to right the ship, there may not be a PS4. I personally do not hate the PS3, but I do hate the company that makes it. I got into the last generation of gaming with the PS2 but the Xbox blew me away. Now with the 360 and Live, I have a hard time believing that Sony can come up with a game plan to make people want to pay more for the PS3 with no knowledge of how the knockoff live system will work, the stupid title "entitlements" and the higher price tag.

Even if the PS3 ciompletely fails (which is very unlikely), it will not kill Sony. One failure does not equal instant death. The N64 is considered by most people to be a failure, and the Virtual Boy was an enormous failure, but Nintendo is still going strong. It took Sega 4 failures to get out of the hardware market (the SegaCD, the 32X, the Saturn, and finally the Dreamcast which were all considered failures). If the PS3 fails, there will most likely still be a PS4. The only thing it might do is knock Sony off their elitist "We're better than everyone else" pedestal.

ChrisHicks 10-18-06 11:24 AM

I was just at a Gamestop and the clerk told me they'll be taking preorders for it in the spring and that you'll only need 250.00 as a deposit. ;)

edstein 10-18-06 11:36 AM

Here is a scan of a new PS2.

kakihara1 10-18-06 11:46 AM

I'd pay $100 max. It's complete bullshit that the PS2 still pulls that kind of cash for a system that's 6 years old. Looks cool though.

edstein 10-18-06 11:52 AM

I figured they do a white one to match their white PSP.

It'll be the Virtual Dual Shock. You'll wear a headset and gloves that allow you to see and use a controller that doesn't exist in the physical world.
