They would never do that. It's Christmas. Why turn down a guaranteed sellout of systems (which brings in revenue and press) as opposed to a more firm launch next Spring when it might not be as well received.

Any word on game pricing? Over $60?

Deftones 09-06-06 12:52 PM

I can't imagine they'd do anything more than $60, but what do I know.

The 360 is not that much less advanced than the PS3. I have yet to see a PS3 game that the 360 couldn't handle. And Blu-ray is not needed for gaming for at least another generation or two.

Well, there was this rumor about $60-$100 PS3 games.

I would bet less so. At least with the PS1 and PS2, they were both working with media that had been out and proven for quite some time. This one is coming out with a brand new format completely. I would expect for problems for the initial run than on the past playstations.

My original playstation used regular componet cables.

Unless I remember incorrectly, the origial PSX had 3 composite (yellow for video, white/red for stereo sound) outputs. There wasn't a component cable for PSX, that I can remember. But, the subsequent versions of the PSX had an all in one cable.

Wrong. Nothing stings worse than missing two Christmas seasons while your biggest competitor has a really nice console out that costs $200 less than yours but the graphics on it look about the same. Sony is caught in a total Catch 22. If they bring out the system, a select few will buy it, resell it on ebay, and most likely a third of the units will be defective, anyway. Those that can't get it either wait impatiently or break down and buy a 360, Wii, or Wii60 (360 and Wii). Sony will get bad press for faulty systems, shortages that will make the 360 launch look plentiful, and mediocre launch games (doesn't matter if they're actually good or not, they'll be panned because Microsoft will have titles like Gears of War and Nintendo will have Twilight Princess).

If Sony doesn't release the system, everyone who has sat on the fence will throw up their hands and buy a 360, Wii, or Wii60. Even some diehards will say, "Forget it. This is taking too long and the system is $600 fucking dollars," and buy a 360, Wii, or Wii60. Meanwhile, HD DVD fans everywhere will rejoice as the much touted "cheap BD player" will not come to market to take advantage of the Christmas season and BD sales will suffer.

So, in the end, it's in their best interests to release the system, even if it means only 100 get out, and only 10 of them work.

Now let's see if these are actually in-game and not fucking cut scenes.

I want to see it in motion, inside the car with gauges and meters and such. Otherwise, I don't buy it.

Supermallet 09-06-06 08:56 PM

People still play Ridge Racer??

Seriously, how can you say that the hardware is on par? Ok sure, the games are reported to perform about the same, but we're talking about a brand new Blu-Ray drive, the latest version of HDMI and new cell technology for the processors. The last thing they want to do is rush it into the market without a good amount of time for testing. A month and a half to produce, test and release something like this is not enough. It's too big a risk.

HDMI is a only a mechanism to get video/audio from the machine. Just because the PS3 may have it doesn't take away the capabilities from Xbox. As for the Blu-Ray drive, you should check out what all the big name AV sites are saying about it. It basically stinks. As for the cell technology it remains to be seen if it's all hype or really is what they tout it.

If it wasn't so true, it would actually be funny.

RayChuang 09-06-06 11:05 PM

Why do I have this feeling that Sony may offer vouchers for the PlayStation 3 but will not do its official launch until maybe March 2007?

Meanwhile, given all the delays, Microsoft could take advantage of this fact and could find itself with a surprisingly strong marketshare because Xbox 360 machines are now plentiful.

Agreed. If the PS3 tanks, it could destroy Sony, as they're already in the red. And if the PS3 tanks, say goodbye to exclusive BD studios as you know the studios were sold on exaggerated PS3 attachment rates.

collven 09-07-06 03:34 AM

Well, a small amount of good news for everyone like me who are actually looking forward to the Blu-Ray capabilities of the PS3. Here is a quote from www.thedigitalbits.com:

"On an interesting related note, a number of our industry sources are telling us to expect the PS3 to one of the best - if not THE best - Blu-ray Disc players on the market initially, because the unit has apparently been put through very rigorous QC to test format spec and disc compatibility. We shall see. FYI, the PS3 streets in the U.S. on 11/17."

So maybe it won't be just a cheap software only BR player.

Michael Corvin 09-07-06 06:38 AM

Hmmm. Just because it goes through rigorous quality control doesn't mean it will be the best player. It just means it will work the way it should, no problems. I don't see it meaning it provides the best quality picture at all.

And didn't Sony rush the BR to the market anyway? Does that mean they rushed QC on those $1000 players?

That doesn't look much better than Ridge Racer 6 on the 360. I have no doubt those are real screens.
