BG&E 2 Rumors surface again (joystiq.com)

Beyond Good & Evil 2 rumors surface Posted Mar 15th 2006 12:00PM by James Ransom-Wiley Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action, Adventure Beyond Good & Evil - According to French gaming site Jeux Expo, Ubisoft's Michel Ancel has begun work on a sequel to Beyond Good & Evil. The original title featured a cliffhanger ending that demanded a second game. However, it was believed that plans for this sequel were cancelled because of poor sales of the first Beyond Good & Evil, despite critical acclaim. Jeux Expo's report claims that the sequel is being developed for all next-gen consoles and will be released next year. This is one of the best games people never played. I read this over on Dueling Analogs... another video games web comic (that is actually funny sometimes): http://www.duelinganalogs.com/comics/2006-06-12.png http://www.duelinganalogs.com/ |
That is a hideous picture of Jade.

I really hope that rumor is true, but I have my doubts.

I agree. As much as I liked the orginal BG&E and would love to see a sequel, I believe all these rumors are nothing more than wishful thinking. Notice that article was posted in March (pre-E3). If the sequel is really coming out next year, why was nothing at all mentioned about it at E3? The truth is that BG&E was originally going to be a trilogy of games. The first game sold very very badly. The sequels were therefore cancelled. Ubisoft has plenty of other more successful and profitable games like Prince of Persia and the Tom Clancy games. I really don't think they would make another BG&E knowing that more than likely it would be a financial failure like the original. |
I'd love a sequel. Hopefully they'll add in some more items for her to use if they make another one. That was my one gripe with the first one (aside from being too short) you really just have the staff and the camera shot thing. Doesn't lend much to variety in combat and puzzles and left me feeling a bit underwhelmed as it just felt like "zelda-lite" in those regards.

These rumors are always popping in and out. Practically every interview with Ancel he's asked about it and he always responds that it's something he wants to do. I keep thinking he's making Rayman 4 in exchange to start working on BG&E2, but who knows. I hope it happens, I love the first one a lot! |
I enjoyed BG&E, but yeah...since it really didn't sell well until it was dropped to maybe $5-$10....that is the only reason I played it. I probably wouldn't pick up a sequel. I don't even remember the ending, so it didn't leave that warm fuzzy, everlasting feeling in me

I can see it happening. It doesn't have to be a sequel in the strictest sense, i.e. a '2' in the title. But a BG&E: the Green Haired Goddess and her Pig or something. That way it doesn't alienate those that missed out on the first one, and could be marketed like a new game instead of a sequel to a dud.
Fans of the first will eat it up and those oblivious to the first are none the wiser. |

Well, any profit-based company whether it is a video game company or not will do whatever brings them the most money. That is their number one priority even if they don't like to admit it. Another BG&E game most likely would not be profitable, so other than pleasing the very few fans who actually want the game, they have no reason to develop it. That's the cold hard truth of the world: Making money is first, everything else is a distant second (including pleasing the fans). |

If there was every a rumor I want to see repeated until it's true, its this one. This game floored me. It was like the perfect evolution of what may have happened if Sierra still existed and was able to innovative the adventure genre. So much fun and charm and one of the few that I would actually consider an intelligent mature title. It nearly makes up for years of being told mature games are those violent bloody shooting games with lowest common demoninator. This better happen!

I was thinking the same thing with some DS games I've played recently.. Phoenix Wright, Trace Memory and Trauma Center, while they're all rated T they all felt more adult-oriented than almost anything I've played in years (and likely most M rated crap on the market). |
Phew....I must like crap. Tom Clancy GRAW is one of the best games I played lately. Keep bringing crap to me :)

Me too. Assassin's Creed (which is the pseudo-successor to the Prince of Persia series) and Rainbow Six Vegas both look like really amazing pieces of crap. I can't wait to get my hands on those steaming piles. http://www.scottrboydpe.com/img/smil...ley_tongue.gif |

I'm just wondering where GRAW or Assassin's Creed were called crap. It's kind of funny that someone mentions that the current business model and consumer market makes it difficult for a game that isn't about "killing other people" to succeed and people jump in mention how great the newest "shooter of the week" is.

The video game industry is a business first and "art" (whatever that is) second, because otherwise they won't be a business very long. If you have Game A that has a target audience of 500,000 and Game B with a target audience of 30,000, and both cost approximately the same, and you choose Game B... well, good luck keeping your job for long. |
I wont say GRAW etc. are crap. But I will say I have no interest and will not buy any game like that for the rest of my life (not that I bought many of them before as it doesn't take long to figure out something's not your cup of tea).
And Breakfast is right, gaming is now a big business and the bottom line is all that matters. I'm just happy Nintendo is content to keep doing things there way and putting out the types of games I like to play, and keeping hardware in my price range. If it wasn't for them I'd have been 100% done with gaming a generation ago. Hopefully they can stick around and keep making a decent profit in their niche, and not change and decide to go mainstream and try to compete with Sony. Or fail and leave us with only MS and Sony to choose from. |
btw a game like call of duty or brothers in arms does not cost the same to make

I was thinking about BG&E the other day and how it would be a hit if only people would play it. I think it would have been a master stroke of goodness if some kind of deal could have been worked out to have BG&E pre-installed on all the 360 HD's or downloadable totally free. Maybe then interest would be higher in a sequel as I really want more.
Or maybe even have it bundled with the Wii (as I think that audience would be more naturally receptive to the game) with a few enhancements added that take advantage of the controller. Unrealistic? Pretty much. |
I would love a sequel to this but I doubt it'll ever happen. I'm sure Ancel wants to do a sequel but no one would ever finance it unless they didn't mind losing money.
I do like the Wii idea, boredsilly. I think a game of this sort might work out nicely on the Wii. |
I really hope this is true, but I am not holding my breath. I don't want to get my hopes up.
Are there many other recent games where the first didn't sell well and they still made a sequel? |
