I will have to check my calendar, but I believe those were being manufactured up to a year or so ago and not 1980.

I really hate to sound like I'm beating up on the 360, because I think its a great console but your rationale does not work for me (probably because the sarcastic attitude of your comments blurs the point you are trying to make). I think these issues will continue to diminish though so hopefully none of this will be a major issue in the near future.

I just am having trouble how you could feel ripped off. To me, ripped off means someone got away with something of mine.

Now, I got a launch console with a warranty if it gets replaced im only suffering for 2 weeks while I wait for my free replacement console. They could replace the thing 10 times and I still wouldnt feel 'ripped off'. Im a big boy, I can do something else for 2 weeks. The thing is, I still have a console that I will get $450 of gaming fun out of.

MS isnt being rewarded when they have to fix/send out replacement consoles so I just have trouble feeling ripped off.

darkside 11-04-06 09:46 PM

I get it. You are okay with that. I am not if its happening more than the normal 1-2% of the time for consumer electronics. I find that having to buy a warranty because the defects are way above normal a problem. Lets leave it at that and let the thread move on. I'm pretty sure we are not going to agree on this one. MS has admitted a problem with the launch hardware and I really believe they are working on it so I will agree MS is not really trying to rip people off.

I personally don't like the way they do their returns and would never buy a warranty from them. I would have no problem at all waiting two weeks or even six weeks (again I have to love your sarcasm towards me like I'm some kind of fucking idiot) if I got back the console I sent them. I have never liked the policy of them shipping you someone else's repaired console. You just never know what you will get back as listed here in this thread by people that have received cracked, discolored or even defective replacements.

That means buying a store warranty which can be more expensive and only used once or getting it at Costco which still means $50 if you are not a member. Bottom line is there is hassle involved with owning a 360 that I currently choose not to deal with. If anyone else is okay with this or has no problem taking a chance with no warranty then I fully respect that.

Anyone else having a freezing problem after updating their Xbox with the fall update?

I hate Xbox's customer service.

I rarely play my 360 (except for Halo 2), but recently bought Gears of War. Well, it freezes up within 3-5 minutes of starting.

I have my 360 on top of the entertainment center. The power brick is out on top of the center and I put my table fan toward both of them, so Overheating is not an issue.

I tried to unhook all of the crap. (It says the disc is dirty when the hard drive is unattached).

I returned the game to Best buy and got a new copy that still freezes. I took the new copy up to gamestop who put it in their machine and it worked perfectly.

But is this enough for the retards at MS? No. The wanted me initially to still exchange this for a 3rd copy of the game (which I refuse to do at this point) They then insist that I try music CDs, other games, etc.

Shouldn't my returning the game and trying it on another system suffice? The damn thing is a POS. I would like real help instead of telling me to throw on a DVD.

I have a launch 360 that finally froze today. It was a combination of the new update and GoW. Never really had any problems until then. I was hoping to avoid the red rings...... Anyways, they are sending me a "coffin" so hopefully I'll be back up in 2 weeks.

K&AJones 11-12-06 09:26 PM

I picked up a 360 and GoW at B.B Saturday. I hooked my 360, then moved my Live settings over, and there was an "update" that I did. I then stuck in GoW and it had a update which I DL. I then played for about two and half hours with no issues.

I have my 360 in an open audio rack but the "Heat Brick" is away on the side with no obstrution around it. One thing I asked when I bought it was the warranty and what it covered. The asst. manager was helping us out and he said he's on his third since from opening day. But he did say there are few less returns with the newer versions than the first two.

I am now a member of the xbox360 fall update freeze club. Stupid update. Though games seem to work if I leave the dvdtray empty and load the game afterwards. Theres over 400 complaints now on the xbox forums, and msft has yet to acknowledge this problem yet. I guess they're pretty happy with the $140 repair fee.

Like I said, I know some people that have 360s with no issues so far and I know that the problems are the minority of people. Next year I may finally jump in and get a 360. I'm mostly curious to see if them changing to more power efficient chips makes any difference in temperature. Believe me I want a 360, but I am not okay with this idea that you should have to buy an extended warranty. CE products should easily last a decade.

It's funny I came across this thread and this discussion. I was ready to buy a 360 this past weekend. I had the money and some games in mind. Friday my brother mentioned (on Halo2) he was using his old Xbox, because he had to send his in. No problem... it happens.
Then saturday my cousin brings over his 360, so we can try differrent cables on my TV to see which is the best. It freezes within seconds with a red ring of 3 lights. He has to send it back for a second time (this was a launch console) AND he has to pay for it because the first time they replaced it they sent him a refurbished item that wasn't a launch console and the warranty “did not apply” to this new one- and they had no record of the old one.

So, I bought an oppo DVD player instead. I know 2 people with 360’s and out of those 2, 3 were send-backs…I’ll wait. That’s just too much of a coincidence for me. I’ve never seen problems with consoles like that.

Barney1234 11-14-06 12:22 PM

It's just really upsetting seeing and experiencing this type of hardware failure. I'm now thinking of jumping off of the 360, and looking into the PS3. I really, really enjoy MS addition to the gaming industry, but this is disappointing. I had to ship my Xbox back to them on my dime! Even though I have the 2 year extended warranty... Oh well, maybe I'll get a new one that won't break within a year. At least I have another one to keep me busy, until that one breaks, I estimate about 4-6 months, then I'll have to send that one it too.

Save Ferris 11-14-06 12:43 PM

I think its kind of funny to see people shake their heads at MS for having problems with their console. To me, buying the latest technology always involves a risk, therefore there exists the ability to cover yourself 100% for $50. Either you consider it part of the cost or you have no right to complain about the latest technology not having as high a dependability as an appliance thats been around for 10+ years.

Im sure you disenfranchised millions of gamers will find a much better return for your money on a PS3 (as long as you buy a warranty).

Barney1234 11-14-06 12:48 PM

I purchased the first Xbox, actually a total of 4, NEVER had a problem. I bought the Xbox on Launch day back in November. I have good reason to shake my head...

Save Ferris 11-14-06 12:52 PM

Sorry. Didnt mean to sound too harsh. I just expect my console to die early any day now. Always have.

Given Sony's track record in the past (PS2 Launch), I wouldn't jump ship to PS3 if you're worried about hardware failure.

Its not the problem with the console thats the issue, its their non acceptance that the Fall Update is causing problems.

Save Ferris 11-14-06 01:38 PM

I dont see how--on a console where they should all be identical--the update will affect some people but not everyone.

actyper 11-14-06 02:02 PM

Different versions, batches, scenarios, many factors. Very unlikely that 2 systems are exactly the same.

Exactly. It was reported on CNBC that Sony acknowledges that the PS3s are shipping with known glitches. Apparently the major glitch is that over 200 PS and PS2 games will not play or have no audio.

Barney1234 11-15-06 09:15 AM

One of my 360s died the day before the update, playing Cars.

I could live with audio issues, that could be addressed in an update. But to have the unit flat out fail... mmmmm is a bit more severe.

My brother gets his 360 back from rapair, 3 days later another ring of death... looks like they don't have the problem licked.
My cousin is still waiting on a box for his shipment back to MS for repair. After 3 calls, he finds out that the jackass in India who took the original service request, didn't like his attitude or something and cancelled the shipment soon after the call and instead scheduled him to drop off the system (we are in NY). It's already been a week. He's really pissed because he traded in his original XBOX (under the false assumption all his games would work on the 360) so he has nothing to play.

movieking 11-22-06 09:43 AM

So has any received their refunds yet?

actyper 11-22-06 09:47 AM

Mine was a launch day console. The support staff I talked to said all launch day consoles get 1 free replacement. Luckily the Canadian return centre is 5min from my work, so I just dropped it off and a new one should ship in 3-5 days.
