I find it interesting that many casual gamers may miss out on 1/4th of the game because of their special requirements to get to. The requirement is obvious, however the difficulty in getting to world 4 seemed particularly high to me.

I also managed to unlock the ability to save anywhere (I think by beating the last castle or opening up worlds 4 and 7 after beating it) which is great since not having the ability to save anywhere was a big pain in the ass, especially for a portable game.

Also, Fireball Mario seems way too strong. Almost any creature, including bosses can be beat very easily with fireballs; and the ability to store the Fire Flower really makes the game very easy.

Overall though, it's the most fun I've had playing the DS.

The fireball is ridiculously powerful, but I think it makes up for how useless I found the blue shell.

Yeah, that's cool. He's says "bye bye" or something when you close it too.

Well, since it's called New Super Mario Bros, I assume they were trying to make it feel as much like SMB as possible, but a much expanded version.

I wonder if this means we'll see New Super Mario Bros 2, New Super Mario Bros 3, and New Super Mario World?

That would be a dream come true.

I've been loving the game so far.

Finding the cannon in the first level was hard.

Spoiler:
Go into the mini fortress with the koopa shell suit, go through the door that has the moving blocks and jump into the top right corner to find an invisible pipe. Use the shell spin to break the blocks and find a second pipe.

So if I beat the game I can save anywhere? I may just rush through it then before trying to get every coin and secret.

I beat it, but I don't see the option to save everywhere so that person must have done something else, or I'm not seeing the option there.

Nevermind, the save option is there.

I'm through the world 3 mid castle. Been taking my time and trying to get all the coins (couldn't figure out how to get to one thus far).

Absolulte loving the game. Seems like a pretty stiff challenge to me, at least if you try to get the coins and explore some. I've died more in the first 2.5 worlds of this game than I have any other previous mario game, that's for sure.

Level design is great with the landscape changing switches, the moving/bucking mushroom platforms, the gorgeous underwater sections.

It's been a long time since I've had this much fun with a game!

So does this play like more like Super Mario World or Super Mario Bros 3?

It's like a backwards Mario 3 in with some elements of SMW. It's not half as fun. In fact, I'd rate it as the worst 2D Mario out of all of them.

I still think it's worth a purchase as it does retain that old school feel. They really should've put a little more effort into it. I mean shit, Mario 3 is larger than this game (and a hundred times better), why can't the NEW SMB try and be bigger than that?

I think we're about to enter a Nintendo Renaissance. Between the DS Lite with all these great DS games, and the Wii, along with all us 20 and 30 somethings having nostalgia for old Nin, Sony and MS are going to get whupped this round.

Once the DS Lite comes out, I'm buying one along with Mario and a bunch of other DS games. Then I'll get a Wii this fall.

Also, Nintendo's website for this game is about the best designed site I've ever been too. It's freakin fun

It plays more like mario 3 than SMW, with some SMB mixed in.

Far from the worst SMB game. Too early to rank it, but I like it much better than SMB and SMB2, not as much as SMW. Will have too play more to compare it to SMB3.

SMB just didn't age well. I played through it a couple of weeks ago through all 8 stages straight and then through the harder mode using Warps on Mario All Stars and it took less than 2 hours.

There's just nothing to see or do.

NSMB tops that by having a ton more worlds and a ton of hidden stuff to find. Not to mention the new items and moves.

SMB2 will always be the worst of the series, even though its a good game, since it's just mario charcters thrown in another generic game.

SMB3 I like a lot, but think is overated. Too early to compare, but I think NSMB will still end up on top due to having all the hidden stuff. Just 3 whistles in SMB3 to find.

SMW will stay on top as it has better control, better items and a TON of hidden exits to find.

SMB2 is an awesome game, I don't care if it wasn't originally a Mario game. It plays differently from any other Mario game, but in a good way. I find it the most compulsively playable after SMW.

I agree on 2, it's great. I think all Marios are great until Sunshine.

I like 2, but was never a huge fan. Don't go back and play it on All Stars nearly as much as I do the others.

Just didn't care for the level design, multiple characters and throwing shit instead of jumping on it. Just isn't Mario.

I'm a fan of 2 as well. I think it has the highest replayability factor than the others because it is so different.

Finished World 3. Lost about 20 lives trying to get the last coin in the castle before I gave up on it for now.

Another thing that's giving this game major kudos for me is having a different end boss at each level (assuming that holds up). Much better than just bowser over and over, or just different (but similar) koopalings.

I'm a huge fan of SMB2, it was my favorite for a long time, 3 has since taken its place .. Not counting the paper marios, Sunshine and Mario 64 are at the bottom of the list.

I'm getting NSMB with my DS Lite next month, woot!

Thanks, guys, for totally getting me excited about this game.... Now I have to go out and get it, even though I don't even have enough time to play the games I already have! I have so many unopened/unplayed DS games it is not even funny... but this is one I will definitely play right away! The original SMB was my introduction to gaming in '87, so of course I have to get every title since then!
