Call Of Duty for the 360 takes over the sales chart.

This was by far the game that pulled me toward the 360. The xbox version of the first COD was a little below average. The 360 version was incredible in terms of graphic and sound.

To see it beat other games on other consoles with larger install bases. Is a testament that the 360 is a viable system. Enough jabber here's the link.

The big launch game always does big numbers. There are few other games on the system to compete against it, and people have to buy games to play on their shiny new system.

Every major console launch has been coupled with a top selling game, so that has no affect on a consoles long term success (though I think the 360 will do fine). It's how the console and games are selling a year or 2 from now that will tell that.

What we really need is more games to come out for the system to help prove developers are behind the system. I've got faith it will happen...and $400 riding on it!

Tell that to MS & Rare. Perfect Dark Zero was supposed to be THE game. Even shipped close to 1:1 if I remember correctly. Instead a couple of ports take the top spots, COD2 & Madden. It has little to do with "just needing a game to play" as there are a dozen games to choose from. COD2 is just that good of a game. There was also little hype to this title. So I find it very impressive that it outsold other systems, especially with the lack of 360s out there.

An FPS world war II game in the top 20? On the 360! You gotta be pulling my hamster string!? What next, will Madden creep its way up the charts? ;) This shouldn't be that surprising. It would be more surprising if it didn't. The install base for the 360 is the exact same audience for the X-Box because they have not expanded beyond that market.

Anyway that is a very "carefully" written article, they don't mention any specific sales figures or rankings, and fail to acknowledge all games that did outsell COD2, and then they compared it to hand selected games released last year? LOL , IGN at its finest.

:headscratch:

He was saying that those type of games sold well on the X-box, so they'll sell well on the 360 too as only people who liked the X-box and it's game library will buy the 360 as they're putting out the same types of games.

i.e. they haven't brought in more Japanese developers, more platformers etc. so they're not likely to expand upon the FPS, American RPG, Racer and sports fans that loved the X-box.

Well, I said the big launch game. MS and Rare thought PD0 would be that game, but it was less than stellar and early reviews and word of mouth turned people off of it and on to COD2.

People due need a game to play, other wise why buy a new console. Reviews, demos etc. made COD2 the top game choice for most people picking up a 360, hence it leads the charts. It wasn't hyped early, but it got great reviews, and was the only real impressive game on the demo kiosks IMO, so it's not that surprising that it was the top seller in the end.

Come on!!!
WWII FPS were played to death (Yeah I'm talking about the Moh series). Outside the Brother in arms series this genre was getting pretty crappy. The COD for the was surprisingly good, but console version were just ok. The 360 to me was a total surprise. The demo was good, but I also think the King Kong demo was just as good.

Yep, maybe I wasn't as clear as I could have been. You're very good with reading between the lines :).

Pretty impressive by any measure. 20% price margin over other gamers certainly helps too.

I suppose that's fair.

Anyway, my main point still stands. It's faulty to even try to state that a console will be successful as it has a game or two at the top of the charts.

All consoles have a game our two at the top of the charts when they launch as a few hundred thousand people just bought the console and need games to play, and there's only a few games to choose from, and even fewer when you limit it to the A+ quality games.

Gallant Pig 01-24-06 11:09 PM

It's a pretty silly article I agree. But I don't think it's fair to try and downplay the excellence of the game by writing it off as another WWII FPS that only Xbox Heads will buy. If this was the first game released on the revolution with some sort of gameplay adaption I have no doubt it would rank very high, same with PS3. This game transcends the genre. I hated WWII FPS games until I played this, it truly is outstanding.

Barney1234 01-25-06 09:06 AM

You know, I've heard so many great things about the game, but doesn't it come down to... It being the best game out there for the 360? FPS are number 1 here in the US. So for a game to be good and a fps, and the LIMITED games currently on the 360 it makes total sense, no biggie in my book.

I hope that hatred doesn't extend to the Brother in Arms series. That series is what renewed my faith in WWII FPS, outside of the MoH crap.

Well deserved. I just played the Normandy mission on the weekend, and omg, IMO it might just have been the "BEST video game play experience" ever. I've already put this game on my top all time list, and I haven't even played a second of online play yet.

The profile of the typical XBox gamer is slightly different that the profile of a PS2 gamer, and probably vastly different that that of the GameCube gamer.

At least that's what I've seen.

As an example, if the Nintendo Revolution is going to be marketed toward "family-friendly" gaming, I doubt that a CoD2-type game is going to sell as well as it does on the XBox, 360, or PS3.

As for CoD2 transcending the genre, not in my opinion. It is visually stunning but it is still a WWII FPS. I don't know of anyone who is NOT interested in WWII FPS games picking up CoD2.

It's not surprising that CoD2 is at the top of the heap of 360 games. The game caters to the typical person who wants to get in on a new console from the start.

I have one 360-specific title... PGR3. I may pick up FIFA Soccer or Tiger Woods Golf. The only FPS I'm interested in is a zombie-themed one. I have zero interest in CoD2 (even though I have the OXM demo) ...and I'm NOT the typical 360 gamer.

Josh H 01-25-06 11:30 AM

To clarify, I didn't mean to downplay COD2's quality. It's a great game in a popular genre (especially among x-box ownders given the success of many fps games on that system), and that's why it's selling the best of the 360 launch games.

I was just saying you can't expand that to say the console will defintely be a success (though again I think it will do fine) because the best received launch titles always top the charts as 100,000's of thousands of people just bought a console and need games to go with it.
