it has to be better than your dsl man. but um i'd hate to tell you man charter has 256k up too, which is what me and martin got away from and now we're lag free. i hope you've got better luck. i bet you're dsl was 256k up as well.

kakihara1 03-01-06 04:12 PM

oh shit that sucks :( xmiyux you should confirm with the cable company exactly what you're getting. The 256 up doesn't cut it for live, as soon as they throttled our bandwidth to 256k up we started lagging like hell.

Well just to compare to my current DSL. I ran a speed test and here are the results.

Your download speed : 55 kbps or 6.9 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 280 kbps or 35 KB/sec.

This was running the speed test on this site: http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=1

Is upload speed going to be more crippling on lag than down? Or is it a combination of both?

Here's how mine compares to your xmiyux using the site you gave.

Your download speed : 4250 kbps or 531.3 KB/sec.
That is 126.1% better than avg. other reports from sprint-hsd.net

Your upload speed : 599 kbps or 74.9 KB/sec.
That is 51.6% better than avg. other reports from sprint-hsd.net

Ok so i will be limited to 3 megs down and 256 kbs up.

Is it worth switching, because it is more expensive and a nuisance to do. will the greatly increased download fix a good deal of my lag?

Another problem i know is that my router uses something on moderate that xbox live doesn't like. I have a new router that supposedly is more compatible with Live, i just haven't figured out how to get it up and running yet.

I think it won't hurt you at the least, your download speeds are fucking hideous.

xmiyux 03-01-06 04:56 PM

I'm looking for a little more than not hurting me, even some improvement would be good. I have to believe correcting that download will at least have some positive effect. Honestly here in WV they just give the packets to squirrels to bring them to our PCs.

Canis Firebrand 03-02-06 12:46 PM

Seeing Miyu, Martin and Beandip's problems with internet connection, I decided to see if I was getting the speeds I was supposded to.

I ran about 10 speed tests. The average came in around 2.25 Mbps/364 kpbs

I am supposed to be getting 5 Mbps/384 kbps. I called and next week they are coming to check my cables and cable modem. I bet it is the cable modem. I have the old one from about 4 years ago before the revamped their speeds. When I signed up with them around 2 mpbs/350 kbps was the service level.

At least I'm getting a credit on my bill for this. Too bad I didn't call earlier.

See, that would also explain why you sometimes lag out. Those squirrels are crafty. When they try to cross the road, they sometimes get half way and get spooked by a car. So they run back and forth a few times. You just have to hope one doesn't freeze with fear in the middle of the road and get squashed by a car. You'd never get that packet to the proper desitnation.

When you figure in the 6-7% overhead for your connection, your upload speed is right on the mark, the down sucks so definitely having them come will help. While they are there make sure you are getting around the 4.5-4.7 range before you allow them to leave.

BeanDip0001 03-02-06 04:14 PM

xmiyux who the hell do you have for DSL????? two things, i'd put money on the fact that somewhere you're networking stuff, router, cables, or whatever are SCREWED UP. and two if you've got any major company, verizon, sprint, etc. there is no way in hell the speeds you're getting are their problem. if your dsl modem can sync to be able to even make a connection the problem is usually with your hardware. yes you may have a dirty line from the poll to your house, but 9 times outta 10 if your line is dirty it will take 5+ minutes to sync or wont do it at all.

i wouldn't switch to cable till you have someone look at your router setup etc. if nothing else man i'm sure someone here could send you an old router and set it up for you.

Well the cable person is coming on saturday and supposedly will run the line in my house and setup the computer and router to get me a decent speed. I'm currently using an old 2 port router someone gave me but have received off ebay a newer 4 port one that was on the list on xbox.com as being amodel good for Live. Honestly one problem is i know absolutely nothing about networking so i couldn't even begin to know whether win xp firewall is setup correctly or not. Let alone try to hook up my router on my own. I'm like an old man dealing with these foreign com-pu-ter concepts.

BeanDip0001 03-02-06 05:20 PM

um okay, i'd really delay the nice old cable person if you've got a provider like verizon then you should be getting 3.0 down and 768k up if you got the good package, if you got the cheap hipE 14.95/month package then itd be 768k down and 128k up.

i'm serious man if you've got verizon, or ameritech, sprint etc i'd cancel that damn charter crap and let someone help you set up your router or something, even better man if you're running windows xp you can send an I need help invite to someone cool who knows networking and they can fix your shit from the comfort of their own desk chair.

i'm telling ya man you're gonna be throwing your money away, BTW who the hell is your dsl provider.

really man i can always send you one of my old netgears or linksys or something i've got a shit ton of good network stuff laying around. i just hate to see you waste your money on even worse crappy cable internet.

BeanDip0001 03-02-06 05:20 PM

damn hipEs rotfl if you cant shoot anything without lag go back to woodstock :johnwoo2::fart:

I'm using verizon but i'm also capped at 1.5 down due to the distance i am from the uplink or whatnot. I'm like 900 feet away from the max distance to get the 3.0 down.

Perhaps i'll look into this help request thing... you volunteering? ;)

BeanDip0001 03-02-06 06:29 PM

yeah man i'll help, but i'm betting your line is dirty and the verizon guy was too damn lazy to replace it. and go to www.testmy.net and run the up and down test there and post the results. you're java test from dsl reports blows, it didn't give me the same reading twice and my line is as clean as a stripper after she shaves.

I don't think that site likes something about my network, because there is no way this is right. ;)

Though the upload stats don't seem too off. But the download stats are no way realistic.

hee hee xmiyux Diagnosis: may need help rotfl

no now i want to play him on doa4 since he has a halfway okay connection, i'm betting on a better more lag free time gaming with him. BTW for anyone that doesn't know the upload speed is more important for online gaming than the download, so on average if you've got 300+ up and 1.3+ down you should have a good time online, but as always the faster you can get the better. and for you fools that have verizon that can get FTTC service i hate you guys.

xmiyux 03-02-06 08:12 PM

but at testmy.net

so all in all if you figure in the overhead and test time its right on the mark of the 5.0/640 i'm supposed to be getting now if i test at like 3AM i'll usually get 5.4/680 so i'm a lot better off with my new super cool DSL than my crappy cable. :) no more DOA4 lag for me!

and for anyone looking to get new DSL stuff that supports ADSL2 and 2+ without getting BFed by the phone company check out

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833127062

or this if you know what you're doing

http://www.l-com.com/item.aspx?id=7572

for you cable guys

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16825122106

also if you've got a motorola already check your signal

http://192.168.100.1/signal.htm

up the range of down you want a range of 26-38 up it should be around 35-54 anything else you should have your line checked by your cc.
