X-Box 360 - Vertical or Horizontal?

So which is it?

Horizontal on top of the first X-box for me. With a media shelf full of horizontal components, vertical just does not look right.

Same here. I couldn't put it vertical without taking out a shelf.

Where's the option for diagonal?

kms_md 12-13-05 08:19 AM

horizontal

sracer 12-13-05 08:19 AM

I keep mine horizontal since that is the only way it will fit in with the other components (DVD player, cable box), but I'd love to have it vertically oriented.

njchris 12-13-05 08:28 AM

I had it vertical, but every time I ended a game, the disk would spin down (but not all the way) and I would hear a low vibration. In horizontal it doesn't do this.

So, I'd say Vertical if I didn't mind the unit vibrating (I'm afraid of the hard drive getting affected down the road).

Horizontal....only way it fits on component stand.

Ditto for me....I think it looks better horizontal, myself....

Gallant Pig 12-13-05 11:18 AM

Is there still a danger if you have it vertical like there was for the PS2?

Yup.

Danger of what?

There is only a problem with moving it from one position to another while it's in use. It was designed to work properly in either vertical or horizontal.

Right, but something that's vertical is more likely to accidentally topple over than something that's horizontal. "Moving it" isn't the problem so much as "it moving".

DamingR 12-13-05 12:32 PM

DO NOT PUT IT VERTICAL.

I had it vertical and it ruined my COD2. Look at joystiq for dozens of stories of scratched discs. It's dangerous!

Michael Corvin 12-13-05 12:47 PM

I use d-skins on all my games so I don't have to worry about scratches. It only adds about $1 to the cost of a game. Well worth it in my book.

Anytime you put a free spinning disc vertical, you are going to have problems. That is one of the reasons Sony made the PSTwo with a drive that had a center snap.

Also, heat rises. Will the top of the unit have vents if you stand it vertically?

Josh H 12-13-05 01:18 PM

I'd put it horizontal.

1. Vertical consoles aren't easy to place in a neat HT setup and look like crap if you can IMO.

2. Vertical just seems more risky to me.

D_N_G 12-13-05 09:16 PM

tried both, vertical was a lot noisier, have it horizontal at the moment

DthRdrX 12-13-05 09:34 PM

I don't have one yet but I have read nothing but complaints about damaged discs with regards to vertical placement.

tenaciousdave 12-13-05 09:58 PM

I have both of mine horizontal.

My launch PS2 at home was vertical since day 1 and it never had any problem. I always keep my new PStwo vertical as well.

I think it might be ok, as long as you DO NOT change the orientation of the game system while it is running. My friend did it once and it makes creepy sounds, scared the hell out of us.

asianxcore 12-15-05 10:43 PM

I have mine vertical. Luckily my bottom shelf has room for the 360 without having to move any shelves. Also it's not closed off, so it's pretty well ventilated.

My PS2 has always been vertical, too, and no problems. In fact my old PS2 was always horizontal, and it ended up crapping out.

Drexl 12-16-05 04:41 AM

Horizontal, and with nothing on top of it.

Mine is vertical, since that is the only way it will fit into my system right now, but it is noisy as hell. I want to figure out a way to lay it down...
