I haven't played much on that list -- just "Beyond Good and Evil" and "River City Ransom" -- but I absolutely adore both of those games.

Guardian Heroes - Saturn [I didn't really get into this one]
Beyond Good And Evil - PS2 [indeed, very cool, creative, and pretty immersive]
Snatcher - Sega CD [sold this one-unfortunately, on Usenet, before finding Ebay]
X-COM: UFO Defense - PC
Ogre Battle - Playstation [and Tactics Ogre]
Herzog Zwei - Genesis [although I got this mostly to resell, since I'm not really into RTS]
Shadowrun - Genesis

I don't like tennis, so VT held no interest for me; I sold my Saturn before PDS came out; and I never had a Gamecube.

Propeller Arena, DAMN I missed a game. And here I thought all this time that I had all of them.

Ah well.

No Dragon Force? I agree with most of the list though.

Beyond Good and Evil is about it. I played Virtua Tennis also in the arcade I believe.

I really wasn't into RPG's back in the day...and I only owned a NES and Genesis, I skipped the SNES, Dreamcast and all those other middle systems.

I've played over half of those...

Jet Grind Radio
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Pac-Man Vs.
Guardian Heroes
Beyond Good And Evil
Snatcher
River City Ransom
Phantasy Star 2
Rocket Knight Adventures
Silhouette Mirage
Ogre Battle
Shadowrun
Propeller Arena

I would just like to use this oppertunity to say that two of those games, namely Panzer Dragoon Saga and Snatcher, I believe have been extremely overrated rated because of their rarity and their existence on doomed consoles.

Although PDS's 3D graphics were groundbreaking at the time, they're ugly as sin now. The plot is vague and muddled, and the world is filled with uninteresting people in uninteresting places who tell you uninteresting things. I'm tempted to say this game should rank alongside early Playstation efforts like Beyond the Beyond and the Grandstream Saga, but the innovative battle system boosts it ahead of that level of mediocrity at least.

Snatcher was fun for an afternoon, but it's highly derivative plot wrapped around gameplay lifted from games like Last Half of Darkness and Shadowgate did nothing to leave a lasting impression on me. The only thing that did leave an impression on me was just how awful the lightgun scenes were. Thumbs up for an interesting and original idea, but thumbs down for the execution on those.

That's probably the first time anyone's ever bashed Panzer Dragoon Saga and Snatcher in one post, but it really does feel good to get that off my chest.

The fact that so many people, myself included, have played games on that list invalidates it. They should have called it "20 games that more people should have played".

I would like to see that list of the best games that literally, nobody has played.

Yes, I'm being a prick here, but honestly, I'm sick of seeing lists of "Top (integer variable) games that (string variable)" according to (one person's blog variable).

That list doesn't seem to be quite appropriate. I'm not a super hardcore gamer but I played at least four of the games:
  • Jet Set Radio (Future) - Not the DC game but the XBOX successor
  • Beyond Good And Evil (right now, a great game....but I'm trapped a little bit at the moment)
  • Virtua Tennis - the best sports game on the Dreamcast
  • X-COM: UFO Defense - Never been much of a PC gamer but that one was great

I'm sure that somebody has played every game that has ever been created at some point.

I agree that at least a title change of "more should have played" or something to that affect is needed.

Other good games that didn't sell very well (so I've read) or are pretty unknown (IMO).

Otogi (XB)
Otogi 2 (XB)
Grandia (SS, PS1)
Rez (PS2)
Klonoa - Door to Phantomile (PS1)
Tomba! (PS1)
Valkyrie Profile (PS1)
Elemental Gearbolt (PS1)
Shining Force III (SS)
Panzer Dragoon Orta (XB)
Deus Ex Invisible War (XB)
Tobal No. 1 (PS1)
Tobal No. 2 (PS1)

It seems from the list in the link and my own that you could name just about any game that was either made by, published by, or supported a console by Sega. I would think that many of the games that Working Designs does their grandiose treatments to could fall into that category too.

To be fair, Tobal no. 2 never came out here, though I did get the import. A much better game than the first, which was ok. Of course, I love Toriyama designs, so I'm a bit biased... It's sad that even bundled with the highly-sought-after demo of FF VII, the first game didn't do anything domestically. Also, I had a really tough time tracking down Elemental Gearbolt (hey, I wanted to make use of my Guncons)

I've played every game on that 1st list except for Shadowrun and the propeller game (which is the only game I've never even heard about). I have to say that Phantasy Star II and Herzog Zwei were two of my favorite Genesis games. I'm sure less people played Phantasy Star IV, though... I never got to play it because it was so expensive at the time (where's my GBA re-release, Sega?).

This board has introduced me to more than a few games that I would have skipped outright. The one that immediately comes to mind is Culdcept, another game that was huge in Japan but didn't do anything here.

Played:
Jet Grind Radio/Jet Set Radio - Dreamcast
Phantasy Star 2 - Genesis
Virtua Tennis - Dreamcast, Arcade
Chu Chu Rocket - Dreamcast, GBA

I think at least Phantasy Star 2 and Virtua Tennis definitely don't belong on that list.

Are you saying that because you don't think the games are worthy, or because they were too popular to be on such a list?

Surprised they dont have REZ on there.

I would add:

Intelligent Qube - PS1
Todd's adventures in Slime World - Atari Lynx
Klax - Atari Lynx

Slime World was the best freakin multiplayer game ever. The Lynx in general rocked and allowed for 16 player multiplayer. The highest we had it was 7 at once. Good times. Klax was also an amazing puzzle game for those of you that played it.

Yikes I own 17 out of the 20 titles!

But like how it's pointed out before, this is one columnists opinion. I'm sure we all have our own diamonds in the rough title lists.

Also I absolutely Adored Panzer Dragoon Saga. I think it was one of the most innovative non traditional RPG type games out there! I loved the combat system! As anyone who's played it knows, my name hails from the game.
The creator of the PDS went on to create one of my favorite games for the Xbox. Namely Phantom Dust!
