The second is a Sega Saturn 3D controller, sometimes packaged with Nights into Dreams.

Never seen the saturn one. That looks even more uncomfortable than the Dreamcast, if that is even possible. Was Sega just trying to be the anti Nintendo? Dominating the non-ergonomic controller market?

What are these? Prototypes?

Speaking of bad Sega controllers.. I find it funny how they packaged a huge, uncomfortable piece of crap with the Saturn in America due to market research.. and quietly killed it off for the smaller Japanese one after numerous complaints. Sound familiar?

Yup. I think the first one may be from the Nintendo days, but I'm not 100% sure.

The Jaguar controller was a nightmare. Most games came with insets that you placed over the buttons to tell you which button did what for that particular game. That's really going to get the casual gamer excited.

I have never seen those before, but they do look like prototypes before the PS1 launched since they are pre-dual shock analog sticks. Also, notice the Playstation logo in the middle. Those look like prototype logos.

Just a note, the PS1 didn't launch with analog sticks, those were added later after Nintendo revealed them for the N64.

There was an Atari 2600 controller like that. I think there were only 2 or 3 games which it worked with, though:

The Atari 5200 also had a dial-pad.

Didn't the Intellivision controller have the overlays?

Oh yeah, I remember that Star Raiders number pad thing. What sucked is when you lose the overlay...and this was before Gamefaqs and stuff.

I'm really surprised you guys don't know what the Jaguar and Saturn controller looks like. I mean you are posting in a video game forum and it wasn't that long ago....was it?

Save Ferris 12-06-05 02:10 PM

at this very moment im not even sure what a Jaguar is when referring to gaming. Ive only had 3 or 4 different consoles in my life.

Yes, the Intellivision had a keypad and used overlays for each game.

And was the greatest system of its time! Side note, Intellivision Lives is due out for the DS early next year and the bottom screen is supposed to be the overlays with touch-responsiveness  Biggest problem with those compilations has been adapting to modern controllers.

That sounds like a good idea. I bought Intellivision Lives for the Gamecube, but some games were completely unplayable. Trying to play Baseball against my roommate was probably the most unintentionally hilarious gaming moment ever. There were so many buttons you had to hit just to get your outfielders to throw the ball, that the other person could get an inside-the-park homerun on virtually every hit.

Ghym 12-06-05 02:50 PM

Yeah, I loved Intellivision. I've still got an Intellivision II, voice module, and about 20 games. I'll definately buy an Intellivision collection for DS.

I am not surprised that people don't remember the Jaguar. It only sold like a dozen systems worldwide. :sarcasm: The Jaguar is along the lines of the 3DO, CD-i, Virtual Boy, and Phantom; they were all systems nobody cared about.

The Jaguar came out in late '93/early '94 if I remember correctly. Atari was using the tagline "the world's first 64 bit system" to promote it, but that didn't do them much good since it was a complete failure. Here is a pic of the Jaguar:

And, of course, by "64-bit", they really meant "32-bit + 32-bit".

joshd2012 12-06-05 03:18 PM

Don't forget the Atari Panther. Developed along side of the Jaguar, it could have actually been a good system - if they didn't ditch it for the Jaguar.

pdutta2000 12-06-05 03:22 PM

The greatest invention was the "Turbo" button on the NES MAX and Advantage controllers. I ripped through games using them.

The pictured controller was a special accessory that came with Nights into Dreams. The normal Saturn controller looked like this..
