I LOVE Michael Giacchino's scores to the Medal of Honor games. He also did Call of Duty. Although it's not a videogame, I love his work on Lost too. Fantastic stuff.

Killer 7 has an awesome soundtrack. I love the Rave On, American Diplomacy, and Blackburn tracks.

Also, the game sucked, but I really liked the Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles soundtrack.

All of the LucasArt's adventure games had great soundtracks. Sam & Max, Grim Fandango, Monkey Island, Loom, Day of the Tentacle, etc. I could listen to this stuff all day.

And of course you can't forget about the classic. Old NES tunes from Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Star Tropics, Guardian Legends, etc, etc, etc, were hypnotic in their simplicity.

Odd, the history of videogame soundtracks doesn't seem to go back too terribly far, especially now that stuff is fully orchestrated.

That said:

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2
Shadow of the Colossus
Indigo Prophecy (Love Angelo's work)
Grim Fandango

The old school tunes are great and memorable, but the simple midi tracks just don't cut it for me these days :-D

Hey, just because FF7 has become so cliche and tiresome doesn't mean it didn't have a great soundtrack chiefs! Don't be afraid to put FF7 on your lists, jerks! Just kidding

Final Fantasy 7 - PS1 (very familiar, and yet still very good music)
Chrono Cross -PS1
Strider - Arcade (So good)
Final Fantasy Tactics - PS1
Legend of Mana - PS1
Star Ocean The Second Story - PS1
Threads of Fate - PS1 (This is the only game on my list where I loved the music but didn't really like the game, at all.)
Zillion - SMS
Space Harrier - SMS
NBA Live 2006 - PS2

To put all those great games on the list and then end it with NBA Live 2006 (which I assume is 90% rap)

I really enjoy Jeremy Soule's music in addition to the aforementioned soundtracks:

Icewind Dale
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Dungeon Siege
Neverwinter Nights
Guild Wars

I'm looking forward to his score for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Other scores I like:

Wild Arms
Xenogears

Chrono Cross and FF7 are probably the only 2 I've ever really noticed all that much and I really like those.

Ahhh... No wonder. I thought Lost had some of the best scoring done on any TV series. I liked the music in the games too.

My vote goes to Koji Kondo

Final Fantasy IV, V and VI
Kingdom Hearts
Dragon Quest Series (Symphonic Suites)
Metroid
The Guardian Legend
Crystalis
Castlevania III, Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night
Ys I, II, III, IV and VI
Legacy of the Wizard
Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu III

Those are just some favorites off the top of my head.

However I must iterate that Final Fantasy VI is probably the greatest musical work that ever is or ever will be in a video game.

Gotta give a shout out to the Mega Man series, especially part 2.

I also enjoyed some of the songs on "Lunar: Silver Star Story".

It did have an awesome soundtrack. And I loved the game.

I think the FF series really shine in the music department and I agree with Pixy on FF VI being one of the best soundtracks ever. I love the entire ~25 min ending; MIDI and all. I really don't think just because a soundtrack was MIDI it doesn't "cut it". I actually prefer MIDI and orchestrated soundtracks to the band of the month type soundtracks.

Also Zelda, esp Wind Waker
Metroid (check out metroidmetal.com , credit goes to Pixy for mentioning it)
Castlevania series
Lunar was awesome and used actual CD quality music back in the day.

Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. Not really a soundtrack but I can still hum their music after all these years. I haven't played a game since that has that memorable of music to hum later.
