Quite a bit has been revealed lately, a lot of pictures. The game looks incredible. I hope it gets a USA release.

It's Nintendo. They'll see that "market research" doesn't show much interest so they'll rebrand it into a Mario, Zelda, or Pokemon title.

This sounds SO good. I hope we hear about it during E3.

1UP's Mother 3 Preview:
http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?pa...=0&cId=3149928

Though radically different in appearance than its original incarnation, Mother 3's core story seems to have remained largely unchanged: A cowboy named Flint and his sons do battle with pig-men invaders from space. Like its predecessors Earthbound and Earthbound Zero, it's steeped in American pop culture, psychedelia and rock music. But it's also a very different game than what's come before it. Mother 3 is far more story-driven than its prequels, divided into distinct chapters and (at least in the early hours) and offering little freedom to wander off the beaten path. The initial difficulty level is comparatively painless next to the often brutal encounters and high critical hit rates of the other Earthbounds, and the series' traditionally clumsy interface has been greatly streamlined... although each character has limited inventory space, so you'll still be doing plenty of item-swapping.

...

There's more to the battle system than simply dishing out menu commands, though. Despite its turn-based style, combat in Mother 3 rewards gamers who happen to be blessed with a good sense of rhythm and timing. The series has always been unique for its habit of featuring dozens of battle themes, but this time it's an integral aspect of fighting rather than simply a novelty. Each action in battle is accompanied by a musical tone, and by tapping the A button in time to the rhythm you can create a sort of counter-melody to the music that deals extra damage with each action. A perfect 16-hit combo (the maximum possible) is usually worth more than double damage over a basic attack.

Nearly every enemy in the game has its own distinct theme -- should you encounter several enemies at once, the primary enemy's theme plays -- so the trick is in learning the proper timing for each tune. A straightforward march is simple, but certain enemies are graced with unusual time signatures and shifting beats, adding a unique touch of involvement to the battle system, and introducing an extra element of strategy to the mix.

...

The melancholy atmosphere might come as a surprise to gamers who were hoping for the relentless wackiness of Earthbound, and there's definitely no shortage of trippy visuals and general oddness. But it lends the gameplay a greater dramatic weight, and gives some substance to the pop culture undertones. Where Earthbound Zero was rooted in American comics and Earthbound was built on campy science fiction B-movies, Mother 3 has more in common with a spaghetti western. (Albeit a spaghetti western with alien pigs.) The setting and themes of vengeance and filial duty seem to have been taken straight from a Sergio Leone film.
I want this so much more now!

Mother 3 was #1 on the Japanese sales charts for last week. Over 200,000 copies sold in the first 3 or 4 days of availability.

madara 04-27-06 04:51 PM

I like to see this here but Nintendo really did not ever get over how poorly Earthbound sold here. Add in NCSX scathing review of how average Mother 3 is after all this time and we may not actually see this outside of fan translation here.

Neither will have any affect on their decision to release Mother 3. Earthbound was 10 years ago.. RPGs were still a niche market then and something that was off the beaten path (ie: not swords and magic) probably didn't entice those that were into it then. Now, RPGs are a lot more popular (still niche) and at this point I'm sure more than a few people will welcome an RPG that isn't a paint-by-numbers formula (at least in its setting and story). As for that second thing.. let's see, they sold 200,000 copies in a couple of days for a "dead" system and one guy on the "internet" said it was average.. I'll give you two guess as to which Nintendo feels is more important.

May want to check out GAF and those in the know. I would love to be wrong on this, deadly wrong but based on reviews from usa sources and past history so far sources say its a big no from big N.
Fingers crossed..

tenaciousdave 05-01-06 02:30 PM

If Nintendo doesn't release this in the US, I shall be forced to bitch and moan like an impotent jerk!

I'd honestly be ok with a fan translation just to play it.

madara 05-03-06 01:07 PM

Yeah I hope GAF is wrong but of all the sites they tend to have most factual info. Now that this seems like last Mother game perhaps Nintendo will just do quick port of it. I hope so!

"Series producer Shigesato Itoi revealed today via an interview posted at his blog site, that he has no plans to make Mother 4. When asked if he won't be making games anymore, Itoi responded "Not Mother 4."

 to them for releasing it on the GBA and not DS still showing the 'boy has some legitimacy for such a big release as this.
Reminds me of all the great RPGs released toward the end of SNES's life like Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana/Evermore.

I hope Earthbound 0 aka Mother 1 gets released sometime maybe as a sweet bonus on this game, one of the best RPGs on the Famicom/NES.
