There goes my interest in the GB Micro; I'm going to have to pick up an SP again - been meaning to play the GBC Zeldas forever. As soon as it gets to ~$50.

Wow. That is incredible. Anyone do the math? How much would it be to upgrade to the newer SP? What is the trade in value for an SP and how much are they going for nowadays?

Most news reports concerning the PS3 and XBOX 360 were tepid at best, with very little actual editorials (read: emotion) being written. In the end, everyone is left feeling a little less than impressed because the leap in graphics is nice but not tremendous as it was the last generation and the systems themselves haven't really promised anything that wasn't already promised by their predecessors - and given that many of them were just hype to sell systems and weren't really delivered, I can't see Sony having the same market dominance they had before. This is the third revolution of the Dual Shock - can Sony really expect gamers to expect something new? |

I picked one of the new backlit SP's up today at Wal-Mart and the difference is incredible. It's brighter than the DS screen. I can attest to the noticeable refresh difference but it's nothing as bad as the PSP which I've pretty much gotten used to.
The quality improvement in the screen is so dramatic that no wonder Nintendo isn't making a huge deal out of it since it could potentially piss off a lot of current SP customers. Also, anyone that bought a replacement plan when they bought their GBA SP's that's still in effect, this is a good time to take advantage of it. -- fab |
fab, how does the refresh issue compare to the DS if you have one to compare with. Obviously the word is that it's there but everyone is saying it doesn't matter compared to how damn good the screen looks. I can't wait until tomorrow! I bought Sword of Mana on clearance the other week but am finishing another game before I start that and can't wait to see how good it looks on the new SP.

It's such a dramatic difference that no wonder Nintendo isn't making a huge deal out of it since it could potentially piss off a lot of current SP customers. To answer your question: the slower refresh is more noticeable on the new GBA SP than on the DS (which I have to really try to notice) but still hardly worth mentioning. -- fab |

Damn if only they put that new screen in the original GBA. I never liked the feel of the SP...too small for my hands. I may end up getting one just because it looks so damn good. :D

I must be the only one that actually loves the feel of the SP. I liked the original GBA a little bit better but not by much. The DS is pretty good but I feel like it is just a tad too cramped. The buttons and the D pad are too close to the edge so my hands get sore more so than the SP.
Then again it doesn't stop me from putting WAY too many hours into Advance Wars DS. |

I fired up Sonic Advance in the system, and I don't see any blurring. Maybe the system has some level of blurring on certain games or something, but if so it is too subtle for me to detect. Face it, the system rules. Super Mario Bros. Deluxe looks so freaking good. It's like playing SMB on a mini RGB monitor. GBC games in general look great. Even original GB games look awesome. I didnt think it could get any better than the SP, but B&W GB games on this new SP are even better. |

I've got a black SP I imported from Japan before the SPs came out in the States, and the Classic NES SP from last year. Any idea on what the eBay/trade-in value for those might be? I'd love to get one of these new versions, and if I do, I'd have no use for the old ones anymore.

An article I thought was fairly interesting. On a side note, could the high early demand for the Micro in Japan be the reason they are so hard to find in the US (US shipments moved to Japan instead) or did stores just not order them because they felt there was no demand?
Portable Sales Surge in Japan Game Boy Micro and white PSP cause sales surge. by Anoop Gantayat September 21, 2005 - Last week, while the Tokyo Game Show was on the minds of many, Sony Computer Entertainment and Nintendo released new variations of their portable game systems to Japan. Early reports from retailers indicate that both systems managed impressive numbers in their first week, with the big N in particular scoring big. Game Boy Micro caused the biggest sensation, with sales of around 150,000 units in its first week, despite earlier complaints about a high price tag. The Famicom-themed unit (a version of the Micro made to look like a controller for the Japanese version of the NES) sold out in most locations within days of the 9/13 release and ended up grabbing 60% of overall sales. Following this in order of popularity were silver, black, purple and blue. In news that's sure to please Nintendo's management, sales of the Game Boy Micro did not adversely affect sales of the company's two other portable systems, Game Boy Advance SP and the DS. We should have specific numbers shortly. Lining up closely with the Micro's strong sales was Nintendo's unstoppable Super Mario Brother's Famicom Mini series (Japanese version of the NES Classics series) edition. The most popular of the Famicom Mini titles was re-released to coincide with the Game Boy Micro's 9/13 release (and also Mario's 20th anniversary) and ended up selling over 150,000 units. Other big portable Nintendo titles, including Capcom's Gyakuten Saiban (Phoenix Wright in America) and Bandai's Tamagotchi for the DS and Bandai's Super Robot Taisen J for the Game Boy Advance, also performed well. Many older Game Boy Advance titles saw a sales spike with the influx of new owners. Less is known at this point about sales of the PSP. Thanks. I thought the DS I looked at was less bright than my afterburner GBA. I will be picking up the new SP. Anyone have an online store or part number, etc. we should be looking for? |

As far as I know it's only available in Pearl and Graphite and I believe it says on the box something about having a brighter back lit screen. I'm grabbing one from Wal-Mart on my way home tonight.....if they got any left. I can post the part# or upc# once I have the SP in my hands.

The box CLEARLY states that it has a new screen AND IT LOOKS INCREDIBLE. Holy crap.
