Insanely awesome NES shooter!!
 

This is why I love the NES. You've seen it all and yet still manage to find these rare gems of pure gaming bliss. If you want something to put on your PSP or whatnot, check out a little game called "Summer Carnival 92 - Recca" and prepare to shit yourself as what you are seeing is running on an 8-bit, 1.79 MHz processor. Okay, maybe you won't be as impressed as I am but I still feel I should toss this out for any NES fans that may have never heard of this, especially any Shmup fans.

While you're at it, check out "Crisis Force," another 8-bit shooter that blows away most of the 16-bit guys.

You can do a Google image search.. but the two games I mentioned above really have to be seen to be believed. In particular, Recca probably looks very dull as a still shot but when you see it in motion it's just insane. Recca totally trumps Gun*Nac on the NES as far as speed and amount of stuff on-screen at once.

Glad I wasn't the only one blown away by SC92-Recca. I don't think they could have eeked out any more impressive graphics from the Famicom. I was so impressed, I was looking to buy a copy.

In the end, I couldn't bring myself to pony up that much money for a Famicom game.

Thanks for the video, that looks like a nice little nifty shooter. 2 of my favorites on NES are Guardian Legend and Zanac, they are both incredible. Did this game ever get released for US?

wow! thats insane, thats the normal speed of the game? I don't think i saw slowdown even once in that video, which is pretty darn impressive for an NES game with that much going on. the powerups are crazy, music actually uses some kind of voice effect too LOL. this game was seriously ahead of its time, thanks for posting it

Excellent choices, two of my favorites as well. They have something in common, they're both made by Compile.. so if you haven't played Gun*Nac you should check it out, it's the other Compile shooter on NES. If you like Zanac you NEED to play Zanac Neo, Compile's swan song released for the PS1 before they closed shop in 2001. It's one of the best shooters I've ever played.

If you're talking about the light-gray ones, those are official NES carts from Asia and Hong Kong.

I just watched a copy sell on a Japanese auction for the equivalent of $52 so don't gauge its value by eBay (though Mad-Gear is a great seller, I've bought many games from him). Sadly I had to pass as my money is tied up on my upcoming move but I'll probably be snagging one after September.

pixyjunket, have you ever played Cho Ren Sha 68K? top-down shoot'em up for pc. hard as heck (for me, i wasn't too good at these :o ), lots of action and excellent soundtrack. grab it here ( < 1MB)

Does anyone know what the tournament thing is about with this game?

Summer Carnival was a gaming tournament held by Naxat Soft in 1991, 1992 and 1993. The main tournament was a time attack for 1 million points. I'm pretty sure the games were only sold at the tournament, though Nexzr was released normally and the version at the tournament was a Special Version. At the end of the '93 tournament they announced Summer Carnival '94 and the game would be Spriggan '94 (!!!). Sadly, it never happened and Spriggan '94 never came to be (which sucks because Spriggan kicks total ass and is a Compile shooter).

1991's game was Spriggan for PC-Engine.

1992 has two games: Alzadick for PC-Engine and Recca for Famicom.

1993's games was Nexzr for PC-Engine.

Isn't Zanac Neo called Zanac X Zanac? I think it fetches quite a bit of $$ b/c it is rare? I am not sure....

Sort of. Zanac x Zanac is just the collection name since the disc has original Zanac and the new Zanac Neo. But you are right about it going for quite a bit. There's actually more copies of Recca for auction in Japan and that game was only sold at a tournament.

Sort of reminds me of Space Megaforce from the SNES, my favorite shooter ever.
